If you’re wondering why the city looks extra hip this week it’s because it’s CMJ, a music lover’s version of Christmas! It’s night one and I find myself only seconds into the first Evvy song and already deciding this was without a doubt going to be my favorite set of CMJ. The rest of the set lived up to my expectations and it’s gonna be hard to beat. 

Evvy isn’t your average indie/pop band. In fact, I heard many influences well outside that genre. If I had to sum up their sound I’d say it’s somewhere between Explosions in the Sky and Daft Punk, with a dash of Postal Service. 

Much of the music is made up of beautiful swelling guitars and thunderous blasting toms, which tend to sweep you up in an emotional trance-like state, until only seconds later you’re dancing and jumping to an infectious chorus. 

The singer’s stage presence was absolutely perfect, taking every opportunity to connect with the early CMJ attendees by making eye contact, posing, and really leaving all her emotions out there on the stage. 

I hate myself for taking this long to listen to Evvy for the first time, but stumbling upon an artist I had zero expectations about and being so blown away is exactly what CMJ is all about. First day of CMJ, it’s gonna be a great week! 

Following up last year’s self-titled debut EP, New York City popstress EVVY is back with a new enthralling single, just in time to join our summer playlist  before leaving for the holidays. The song is called Tidal Wave and showcases EVVY’s powerful vocals on top of a captivating cascade of massive dancey synths, which lead to a passionate house-tinged chorus.
