OK I don’t want to lead the Disc Horse to pasture or anything, I just want a calm and thoughtful discussion but
Maybe this has something to do with the fact that I’m agender, but I find cis people’s immense attachment to the gender identity of their children frankly disturbing.
Necessary background information: I have fallen into a YouTube trap of some sort of TedTalk video list of Parents With Trans Kids Talking About Their Feelings (which I personally don’t recommend, but here we are.)
Over and over and over again I hear these parents speaking of their trans kids in the narrative of “losing” their ‘son’ or ‘daughter’ because their child has come out as trans. They start CRYING. They legit BAWL on stage because they conceptualize their entire damn CHILD in this ONE parameter of this ONE gender - SO MUCH SO THAT THAT CHILD DECIDING TO LIVE THEIR LIFE PRESENTING IN A DIFFERENT WAY IS EQUATED TO THEM LITERALLY ‘LOSING’ THEIR WHOLE DAMN KID.
Like. Is that not…. mind-blowing? Is that not really fuckin’ weird? Your kid is RIGHT THERE. THEY’RE NOT DEAD. THEY ARE. LITERALLY. RIGHT THERE.
This probably also has to do with ownership of children, and perceived control of their child and how they feel they have agency in the child’s relationship with their identity. But these same adults who laugh about how THEIR parents cried over them getting tattoos or piercings (changing their body permanently, etc) then turn around and pull this whole “MY BABY IS GONE” biz.
It’s disrespectful to your child AT BEST. You are conflating their gender to their entire fucking identity as a human person with interests and talents and quirks. The fact that this is enough for you to think of your child as ‘gone’ says a whole ton about what you valued about them as a person.
And yes, I understand that maybe they imagined some sort of life for their child, perceived a different future. Maybe yes, they are mourning stuff they’ve conceptually ‘lost’. But the thing is… There’s still nothing to ‘lose’ because they don’t OWN any of that. That stuff - the potential future of whatever could have been - isn’t THEIRS to lose. It’s their kids’.

bad moon on the rise
Once upon a time I worked in this little burger/coffee/ice cream shop and a lady came in one winter and asked if we had a caramel apple drink and we were like ‘well we have cider’ and she was like ‘no I don’t remember what it’s called but this place made a drink that was chai tea, apple cider, and caramel’ and Breezy offered to try and make something for her but she changed her mind and left so Breezy and I were like ‘alright let’s try this’ because we had chai tea, instant cider mix, a shit ton of caramel, instant hot water from the espresso and too much free time.
And let me tell you it was delightful. It tastes like watching the leaves changing color and dancing in the wind. It tastes like picking out pumpkins and gourds and fresh apples at the farm up north. It tastes like witches and freedom.
I make it every year now and this year I walked in the house on the morning of October first with all the ingredients and shouted ‘FALL DRINK’ and my roommates were like ‘????’ so I made them Fall Drink and now every time they get home from work they’re like ‘Fall Drink pls?????’
Anyway I remember literally nothing else about that woman but I’m very grateful to her.
for anyone wondering about proportions/etc here’s op’s answer from the repiles:
@gaslightgallows I feel this would be relevant to your interests.
I don’t like caramel but I can vouch for hot chaider being amazing.
Deareat @simonalkenmayer I feel like this is relevant to your interests.
Also, I do something like this in the crock pot with the overly sweet Growers Pumpkin Apple Cider, chai spices, cloves, a bit of orange juice, and some super dry Pinot Grigio.
Mix, heat, and serve on a nippy night best spent cuddled under blankets with a book.
My friend, you have essentially backward engineered a wonderful winter drink from the Stuart period.
White sack wine, cider, spices (clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, ginger) tea, sugar, and if you want it authentic, a bit of cream or whipped egg. All this is brought together in a low temperature and then stewed for a time. It can also be “pulled”, a process in which one “stirs” the concoction by using a ladle and pouring it repeatedly from high in the air. Makes it foamy and frothy.
Serve warm.
On a cold night, this is a delightful thing. Believe it or not, we also used to make it with a stout beer instead of wine. For a darker richer flavor.
Well now I need to try the Stuart version, too.
I can also give you older versions, if you like. Or you can google “posset”.
Older versions please simon!!

Here’s a thought, maybe people’s growing irreverence for 9/11 is because it was a long time ago and younger generations weren’t as affected by it, or maybe they are so sick of the way it has been basically commercialised by politicians and used as a device to justify incalculable pain and they are tired of it being cynically trotted out every year and told to never forget while every year they are also told to all but ignore mass shootings and US humanitarian crimes.
And like, I dunno, maybe it isn’t about disrespecting those who died but refusing, for any number of reasons, to be a part of the governmental hallmark industry that has built up around it.
I take students to see the 9/11 memorial all the time. More and more of the students I get were either so young or not even born yet.
And every time, I ask them, what do you think? What are you feeling? And many of them are hesitant to respond so I’ll prompt, “Was it sad? Was it boring?” And as soon as they know I’m not gonna judge them for it, 100% of the time, they respond, “I feel bad that I don’t feel as moved by it as you. You cried when you told us about it and I get that it was such a horrible day and so many people died, but I can’t really think of what life was like before or just after that time.”
That really struck me the first time I heard it because these kids really don’t remember a time when things were so carefree and relatively quiet. Little to no security screenings. Almost zero school shootings. Kids stayed outside by themselves until the street lamps came on.
Because they grew up in a post-9/11 society, all they’ve ever known is mass violence and distrust of everything. Kids expect a plane to crash into a building, a truck bomb to go off at a big event, a student shooting up a school. And they’ve just got to deal with it and keep moving on or they won’t survive.
This.
I remember being in 9th or 10thgrwde and the teacher was like “you all remember where you were when 9/11 happened”
And 20 hands shot up. Cuz no the fuck we didn’t. We were 5 years old.
I was in 8th grade when it happened. I remember the day, remember the somberness, the quietness of the halls. The kids who sometimes had to leave to have a cry over lost loved ones, and no teachers said a word, letting people leave without asking.
Last year, my son entered kindergarten. Within the first few months, he started growing fearful, very fearful about bad guys and death. He had to go through live shooter drills and comes home and tells me he’d protect me from bad guys. And I had to hold him, both of us crying, as I told him I would be the one protecting him, and him saying he just didn’t want me to die.
Fuck this worship of 9/11 and all the fallout that’s come of it, it’s destroying our children. Mourning it in the time made sense. We need to move on and do better
Good for you, Pearl.
