q really out there like 'robin hood au,' 'enemies to lovers,' 'robin hood/maid marion (background),' 'sheriff of nottingham/robin hood,' 'graphic depictions of violence,' 'rating: teen (unfortunately)'
Average Deep Space Nine A plot: "What are you willing to sacrifice for the chance at a better world? Who are you willing to hurt? Will the pain you cause now outweigh the peace that it might bring? When both choices are bad, and you do what you think is best, can you live with yourself after? Could you live with yourself if you made the opposite choice?"
Average Deep Space Nine B plot: "What do we do with all this hot sauce!?"
ROUND 2 â Match 22 of 138
Garak (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
Problematic because: "worked for the space fascist lizard KGB" Propaganda: "there is truly so much going on with him. he was exiled from his home for mysterious reasons, he's gay, he kills people, they put a chip in his brain, at least 2 regimes want him dead, he is determined to escape exile and he wants to die but the twink doctor he's involved with won't let that happen. i don't want to spoil more than i already have"
vs. Kyubey (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
Problematic because: "manipulating young girls into contracts that force them to kill monsters until they themselves turn into monsters" Propaganda: "This behavior was ultimately not based on any form of malice, as they supposedly have no emotion(considered a rare mental illness for their kind) and they needed to harvest human girls to stall out the heat death of the universe. Plus they're just this unkillable little freak that will just consume their corpse as soon as they get into a new vessel, just to bother one of the girls that they're talking to."
Who should advance?
Garak
Kyubey

honey are you okay? youre being framed as the subject of a renaissance painting again :(
getting lost in boston is fun because I turned around on a street corner three times and some guy yelled "hey stupid! the bus is that way!" very helpful interaction and accurate insult, 10/10 no notes
one time I walked around a building a couple times looking for a bathroom and this guy went "this bitch thinks she's on a merrygoround, where the fuck are you tryna go? bathroom? one floor down to the right behind the door that says bathroom."
My very first time in Boston. I was absolutely miserable, trying to drag my giant suitcase up a lengthy set of stairs in the pouring rain. This guy who had already reached the top looked back at me with the most pure expression of disgust Iâve ever seen in anyoneâs eyes, marched back down the stairs, grabbed my suitcase, carried it to the top, left it there for me, and walked away without ever saying a word. I think about him often.
For the people in the notes going "why is Boston like this": a) the insults are a way to show you have no ulterior motives when helping someone (and don't need to be thanked or repaid), and b) Boston was settled by the Irish
also the Italians. mixing Irish and Italian sociocultural attitudes had the effect of multiplying the Sass Levels by the power of infinity, in the sense that you get all of the clever dry wit of the Irish and all of the bitchy gossipy condensation of the Italians rolled into one very stereotypically overly-friendly American package.
also worth noting that who you are to them doesnât matter. theyâll talk to strangers like that and will also talk to their best friends like that. theyâre just Like That.
More from the notes:
Iâm not from Boston, but grew up less than a 2 hour drive away in the 860 part of Connecticut. I lived in Madison, WI for a while and there people would all âpolitelyâ tell you things you already knew while you were minding your own business looking confident in what you were doing. âThe bus will be here in 10 minutes.â Yeah, itâs my normal bus and Iâm just calmly sitting in the shelter you are walking past. âThe bathroom is that wayâ yeah, this is the last rest area before Chicago so we all stop here all the time, and I am walking directly toward it like Iâm in a NYC subway station. These kind of things happened in crowds. Just people going out of their way to act like you are struggling when you clearly are not. Not like you are the only two people around and they are trying to make small talk.
It was just so rude compared to what I was used to. Iâll take grouchy advice when I need it to polite hassling when I clearly have it handled and am minding my own business.
Realizing that those upper midwesterners clearly had trouble reading my standard northeastern âleave me the fuck aloneâ body language. What I canât figure out is what it looked like to them instead and why.
I relate to âLetâs take ibuprofen togetherâ memes not just because of the ibuprofen but because I have actually felt jealousy when a long time FWB said someone else gave him ibuprofen when a bunch of us were hanging out yet I regularly discuss his romantic and dating life with him with zero jealousy. So, yeah.
I mean. Iâm glad someone else was there to take care of him while I was busy elsewhere. But yeah. Little bit jealous. I always have ibuprofen on my belt.
i feel like there is a sleep in me that needs to be slept but each time i sleep i don't sleep that sleep
The Star Wars Original Trilogy is peak fiction because they took a fairy tale and set it in space, then they gave the princess in distress a GUN. But even better they gave her a sharp tongue and the power of revolution. They made the âdragonâ a depressed cyborg father with asthma who doesnât understand his own emotions and does murders because of it. And they made the knight a blond Barbie boy who attempts to solve problems with the power of love like heâs Sailor Moon or something.
And then they said, âoh yeah theyâre all related btw. All the galaxyâs problems are this one familyâs fault. Hope this helps đâ

Tbh I think the "but data centers are important infrastructure, not just AI" talking point misses that like
Ok so roads are important infrastructure. A lot of stuff that's important happens on roads. Now, let's imagine that quadrillionaire Matt Stench has decided that the next big tech innovation is the Wide Car. It's a car that takes up six lanes despite seating only one passenger.
The Wide Car is supposed to be the future, and everyone's going to be driving Wide Cars, even though nobody who makes Wide Cars is turning a profit. Employers are offering Wide Cars as an employee benefit, and getting "nah." Some employers are going as far as demanding their employees drive Wide Cars, and the result is that people take time out of their workdays to get in the mandatory gas usage for their Wide Car before driving home in a regular car.
In spite of the fact that the Wide Car is clearly set to fail, there's an enormous push to expand to twelve-lane roads to accommodate a bunch of Wide Cars that simply will not materialize. This is not an organic response to demand, but a speculative investment that amplifies the existing issues with road development for no good reason.
That is the problem.
Oh and the road infrastructure project is buying up resources other people could have used for literally anything else. With money they promise they'll be making from Wide Car sales any day now.
Okay so what I'm getting from the notes is that when you try to transplant some techbro nonsense into an offline equivalent, you have to be careful to avoid simply inventing something the Americans are already doing in real life
as a teen, i was constantly harassed by adults enforcing ''dress codes'' on me. I very much experienced this as sexual harassment. I think this is one of many cases where people would more easily understand this as sexual harassment if I described it as if it happened to an adult.
imagine being on your lunch break, and your supervisor comes over to your table, tells you to stand up in front of everyone. they draw everyone's attention to your thighs. they tell you that you have broken the dress code because of the length of your shorts. they tell you to go change (so you do not get the rest of your lunch break). they do this every single day at lunch. every day. so you read the whole dress code front and back, and you choose your clothing carefully to not break it. you bring a cloth tape measure with you to work because they will not believe you. this time when your supervisor tells you that you're breaking dress code, you pull out your tape measure and show that you are within the limit. your supervisor says "I bet you wouldn't want me to bring you to the boss and let him measure it, would you?" it's clearly a threat: if you don't obey then you will be put alone in a room with your boss and he will touch your thighs. you don't know how to respond. you're taken out of lunch again.
this was my experience at school. replace supervisor with "teacher" and boss with "principal." this was sexual harassment. fuck dress codes.
We didnât have this in the 90s. We just didnât. At least not in New England. We had almost no dress code at all, the only thing enforced was around swear words on t-shirts, sometimes. My mother told me stories of the bad old days in the 1960s where there were similar rules to the reblogged story. Like glad thatâs over kind of thing.
I did hear there started to be a bit of a dress code after I graduated. Around things that were supposedly gang related. They also banned cloaks for some reason, which could really only have been that they didnât like me personally (I wore one everyday).
But I never imagined this level of going backwards outside of my worst speculative fiction fueled nightmares.
You know you follow too many polls when you start evaluating two characters outfits to pick the one you prefer before you realize you are supposed to be deciding between them based on them being problematic.
my petty gripe about anachronism in historical/fantasy/spec-fic worlds is attraction language.
Weâve all heard the âshould you use modern queer labels or notâ argument but honestly even when people go âtrue, they wouldnât use the labels âaromanticâ or âasexual,ââ so often the characters describe their experiences as âI never felt romantic attractionâ or âI donât feel attracted to anyoneâ in ways that makes me go. You are stilllllll thinking about this in an extraordinarily modern online way. That 19th century steampunk detective man will NOT be angsting about having never felt romantic attraction, he would be angsting about being unable to feel moved by the beauty or charm of a woman, or something. And I do think that âattractivenessâ language is different from the identity-level idea of experiencing attractionâSherlock Holmes does not talk about not experiencing attraction, but when Watson says âWhat a very attractive woman!â Holmes responds âIs she? I did not observe.â (And then Watson calls him an inhuman automaton and calculating-machine and Holmes calls Watsonâs judgement biased). Never swayed by the attractiveness of a man or woman, never desirous of marriage, never charmed by the delights of love, all of these feel like some of the variety of ways that someone in this milieu might describe an ace- or aro-spectrum identity more than ânever felt attractionâ does. Mostly because, like the terms for aromantic and asexual themselves, nailing down an exclusively attraction-based definition of a-spec identities is a relatively new and extremely post-AVEN thing. And yet in fiction everybody knows to articulate their experience as feeling sexual/romantic attraction. And I always want to go nooo how would THIS character think about it?? Not how you think this character SHOULD think about it, how would THIS person in THIS context articulate their feelings?
This works the other way too. Once you figure this out you can read historical literature and watch old movies and shows and a TON of characters are having what we now call aro and ace experiences. Occasionally you wonât be able to tell if a character is aspec or gay or some combo because theyâll just say they arenât interested in marriage, but youâll know theyâre queer! Itâs honestly a delight and very validating.
Oh look, itâs the first half of my year! Except I read this differently than intended, I was seeing the depressed images as responses to the âwell, at least Iâll tryâ images because I kept trying and it didnât really work. Because all those things can make life better, and I have had fake it to you make it work for me before, but it doesnât always. A friend inviting me for a visit somewhere new and planning a really cool day for us finally worked though!

My kid got me into My Hero Academia and today is her birthday. Yes, July 15th.
When I went into labor I thought her birthday would be July 14th. But I was in labor for 35 hours. Was it worth it so she could have a cool fandom birthday? I donât know about that. But it sure was worth it for the bragging rights.
Ryland grace propoganda time
âOh but voting for ryland grace isnât fun, cause ryland gosling-â
WRONG.
get that idea OUT. Ryan Gosling is a conventionally attractive actor. Ryland Grace is a nerdy stubborn fuckin little guy who formed a codependent relationship with a rock spider and is so dumb when it comes to relationships he went out for platonic dinner with his exâs friend every weekend for years.
this man is not some blonde hunk from the front of a Calvin Klein advert. This is an awkward middle school teacher. He is a loser and i have a list on why.
Unironically said âwhomp, there it isâ while giving an impromptu lecture to the entire worldâs leading scientists
his immediate reaction to seeing an alien was to dance horribly and see if it mimicked him
is aroace
if you donât want him to be aroace thereâs also markiplier
Or Stratt or carl or rocky or rocky and Adrian or mark fucking watney (itâs everybody)
There are currently 455 fics under the tag âryland grace is a wet catâ
called a tube of gravy âbetter than sexâ
named the medical robot Armando and thanks it
made rocky a paper hat for the top of his xenonite ball that said âsavior of the worldâ and drew rocky lab goggles on his tunnel
wears shitty science pun shirts
wears his glasses so wrong itâs hard to believe theyâre intact
Brought back hopecore and space and good movies all in one character
he is a loveable loser and deserves to win this.
Make the right choice!
VOTE GRACE!
