Xena’s amazing costumes.
The evacuation prep poster is done! This poster is designed primarily with wildfires in mind, but the tips can apply to preparing for any much any disaster.

[[Image ID: A poster including a layered graphic showing what items to have ready to prepare for evacuating your home based on how much warning you have that you need to evacuate. The inner, red, level is labeled “No Warning.” The next, orange, level is labeled “Less Than an Hour.” The next, yellow, level is labeled “More Than an Hour.” The final, green, level is labeled “General Preparedness.” The items associated with each level and the text are included below. /end ID.]]
———-
Evacuation Prep:
As the world changes, it is important to be prepared to safely and efficiently evacuate your home, potentially with little or no warning. Preparing ahead of time can help to reduce stress and anxiety, and help you evacuate safely if the time comes.
Red Level (No Warning): People | Pets | Keys. Human life matters most. If you can’t rescue your pets, let them out to give them their best chance. If evacuating by car, don’t forget your keys.
Orange Level (Less Than an Hour): Crucial Meds | Important Papers | Money | Paper Map | Pet Vaccination Records. Crucial meds and medical equipment. Papers including passports, birth certificates, medical records, etc.. Multiple forms of payment. Paper map with marked evac routes in case of signal loss. Phone. Most evac centers require vaccine records for pets to be allowed in.
Yellow Level (More Than an Hour): Photos | Hard Drives | Computers | Chargers | Irreplaceable Items | OTC Meds | Pet Supplies | Pet Food | Clothes | Weather Gear. Family photos. Hard drives and computers. Make digital backups ahead of time. Charging cords. Irreplaceable items such as collectibles and mementos. Over the counter medical supplies such as Aspirin and tampons. Pet supplies such as bowls, crates, toys, and litter. Pet food and treats. Clothes. If you are running out of time grab your laundry basket. Weather gear if needed.
Green Level (General Preparedness): Food | Water | Radio | N95 Masks | Multitool | Power Pack | Gas | Stove + Fuel | Flashlight | Toiletries | Emergency Contact Info | Bedding | First Aid | Can Opener. Easy prep, shelf-stable food. Water. Battery powered/rechargeable NOAA weather radio. N95 masks for smoke. A multitool. Rechargeable power pack for phones. Keep your car at least partially fueled at all times. Portable stove and fuel for cooking food without power. Flashlight and spare batteries. Toiletries including hair products, toothbrush and paste, etc.. Emergency contact info for friends and loved ones. Spare pillows and blankets. Dedicated first aid kit. Can opener.
Save yourself time and stress by preparing an evacuation bag ahead of time and keep it in an easy to access place. At the end of every season rotate out the perishable items within such as food, water, and medications. The more you can keep in the bag, the more time you’ll have to grab everything else. Remember, it is okay if you can’t do everything. Some preparation is better than no preparation.

Putting this back in rotation. Sigh.
Sharing this bc I am actively using it. Evac orders are a street away so we started with orange and have moved to yellow. OP, I didn’t have this printed out but I remembered it existed and was able to easily find it. Thank you.
Oh no! I hope things turn out okay for you. I’m glad the poster was able to help!

One of those fandom things that I love is when there’s new characters around and, with the unwavering confidence of an old farmer appraising cattle, fanfic authors take one good look at them, tilt their imaginary hat, and go “Aye. Praise kink, that one. Mighty case of praise kink if I ever saw one.” And everyone else just “aye.”
Not to mention the plot tropes.
“I don’t think the Highschool AU is going to come in too strong this year. Fandoms a touch jaded for that. But the hurt/comfort is growin’ thick as weeds and twice as fast. It’ll be a good harvest, fer sure.”
@cynaram
“I hear over at [neighbouring fandom] they’re putting the top field into fix-it fics.”
“Yes, ‘twould be. They had a hard season last year, a right hard season.”
“You think I ought to plant a little Sailor Moon Wild West AU? Don’t know if anything would come of it. Might not make it to harvest.”
“Won’t know until you plant it, will you?”
“Ah, a heritage crop.”
The shipping forecast.
The Fandom Almanac
“I think I’m going to sow some rarepairs this season. Don’t know what the market for ‘em will be, but I can eat ‘em if nobody else wants to.”
Petition to start referring to fanworks as ‘produce’ and stop calling it ‘content’.

Content = Lifeless. Sterile. An obligation.

THROW OFF THE JANGLY YOKE OF OPPRESSION
Brutal honesty: I don't trust you to put in the intense work for a glorious revolution if you won't put in the minimal work for mundane maintenance.
(This was about the guy in Washington D.C. who threw food at an ICE cop.)
Does your gun husband have any opinions on sandwich-based ammunition?
After a brief conversation with Large Bastard, this is what we have come up with:
So with sandwiches you're going to deal with dispersal patterns, which means that the further they travel the further the ingredients will spread apart which means that each individual hit is from a smaller object and does less damage - this is why Dick Cheney was able to shoot a guy in the face with birdshot and have the guy not die: the "shot" in "birdshot" or "buckshot" describes the size of the balls and birdshot is real small and disperses pretty widely in a relatively short distance. This is also why shotguns are generally considered short-range firearms, you're just not going to have a tight pattern at any kind of distance and the damage done by one ball of buckshot isn't enough to take down a buck so you need the buck to get hit with several.
A subway sandwich is for extremely close-range encounters (because of the dispersal) and is not going to have a great deal of stopping power because the components of the sandwich are light (like birdshot), which means they don't have a great deal of force on impact.
What you want is a sandwich that will remain a cohesive whole through the entire trajectory; a grilled cheese might seem like a solid (hah) option here because it isn't going to fall to pieces. However the problem you have with grilled cheese is that it is going to tumble - the sandwich is not very aerodynamic and is going to lose speed (and therefore force) as it travels *and* you're not going to have a great deal of accuracy due to the tumble. AND it's still pretty lightweight so it's not going to have a lot of penetrating power.
The reason that bullets are bullet shaped is because it makes them good at being bullets, so a subway sandwich is on the right track; a meatball sub is going to stick together better than a turkey sub (because of the melty cheese) and is going to weigh more than a grilled cheese (because of the meatballs and sauce) but I still think that you can do better.
If you want something to stay together when it naturally wants to fall apart, you can put it in a wrapper - for bullets, you do this by coating them in a "jacket" of another material, like copper. The Subway Sandwich comes wrapped in paper, but the wrapper is flimsy and might tear apart in motion and definitely will not survive impact in such a way that it transfers force to the intended target.
You also *do not* want to toss it vertically so that there's as much surface area as possible making contact with the target - you should aim for a horizontal throw with little lateral motion that will focus the force of the impact onto as small an area as possible so that the damage isn't distributed over the surface but travels deeper into the target. Bonus points if you can get it to twist in the air for greater stability (remember that "rifles" are called rifles because of the rifling in the barrel that causes the bullet to rotate in the air and fly straighter than a ball coming out of a smooth bore).
So if I wanted to do the most possible damage to an ICE agent while hucking my lunch at him, I'd want something bullet-shaped (aerodynamic, not going to tumble) so that it would move fast, heavy enough to do real damage (weight times velocity equals force, remember), that would stay together at least until impact (jacketed), and could be thrown like a football (horizontal with a bit of a spin for greater accuracy) I'd go with a double-wrapped steak burrito from chipotle with no rice, double black beans, and extra tomatillo red chili salsa.
If it *has* to be a sandwich, meatball sub from a mom and pop that'll give you huge portions and wrap it in three layers of foil to keep it warm.
So you're saying (if you permit me their classification as sandwiches for this conversation) that dürüm and burritos are good ranged weapons?
They can be, but if they're partially unwrapped as the ones in these photos are they'd be considered hollowpoints; the goal of a hollowpoint is to split open and cause tissue damage once it has penetrated the target so in this format it would be less effective than full jacketing because regardless of what food you use, the ammunition is going to be more frangible than the target.
@copperbadge Here's more Important Sandwich Research and Discourse for you.
This is interesting because if we apply that criteria to the subset of sandwiches in the ongoing gendered sandwich research study, the veggie wrap (jacketed, full of hard crunchy shrapnel) and the chicken salad grinder (weighty, held together by the mayo sauce) would be the most aggressive sandos to whip at an ICE agent, despite being considered the most feminine by A Certain Kind Of Dude. Plus both mayo and hummus are going to stick, which at the least is humiliating and might optimally temporarily blind someone with a visor of any kind.
Once you get into the "masculine" cold cuts -- ham, turkey, roast beef, Italian -- you're losing velocity and cohesiveness both, and the condiment factor is greatly diminished.
I think this interesting inversion probably fails once we step outside the scope of my research, because I agree that steak burritos and meatball subs are both going to be the most effective and I would theorize that, being beef, they're considered closer to the masculine end of the scale. But it's funnier to p-hack it by sticking to the study parameters with more rigor than good sense.
Much to consider in the field of sandwich studies lately.
when u look at 2017 and think “oh that’s only like 3 years ago” and it’s actually 12,000 years ago and everything is gone and everyone you know has been reduced to ash and the world is completely different

Like yes Xena was made in the 90s and the network was extremely worried about the perception of it as gay so they tried to put some constraints on the show
but Lucy Lawless has said that the writers knew what they were doing from the start (meaning, they were writing Gabrielle and Xena as love interests from the very beginning) and that it actually dawned on her when she and her costar Renee O'Connor read a fan article about the queer subtext in the show. Lucy also said in an interview that she believes the relationship came across authentically and was compelling even before they realized Gabrielle and Xena were love interests, because she and Renee were already making love the focal point of their relationship on-screen:
We never thought about sexuality or anything, but we did think about love, and it’s only about finding the love in the scene. When you don’t know what else to do, look for the love in the scene. And that was, I guess, the magic ingredient.
In the end, Lucy and Renee were extremely aware of the queer coding of their characters and Lucy has talked about the concept of queer coding in the 90s to make the relationship possible without the show being cancelled:
Like, Renee would go to Texas and she'd say something about the lesbian subtext and they'd go, "What lesbian subtext?" Like if it's not relevant to you, you won't see it. If it's relevant to you, it'll be there in spades. It's very clever.
So if you ever think, "I want to watch Xena but I wish it were canonically gay." It is. It is. They are.
