I feel a bit impatient with the way leftists criticize USAID when you point out that defunding it will have and has already had devastating consequences. "Yes, literally millions of people have died, but have you considered that USAID also was the funding vehicle for stupid and ineffectual schemes to overthrow the Cuban government." Like okay. Which of these things do you think I'm sad about losing? It's just like this absurd tendency to pick at some "ummm actually" in the face of a humanitarian catastrophe.
#I read an article that wholeheartedly argued that USAID literacy programs for women in a highly patriarchal country was imperialist#because that country traditionally had a strong oral tradition of which women were the primary keepers.#And teaching them literacy led to the decline and erasure of that culture.#I shit you not I read this on JSTOR with mine own two eyeballs.#God forbid non-Western women.... read?? And work?? And escape patriarchal abuse??
anyone else notice how when "digital assistants" were just supposed to do specific tasks when you asked for them we had Alexa and Siri and Cortana, but now that they're being marketed as smart enough to take actions and make decisions on their own they've got names like Claude and Devin
Why have I never noticed before that Kel takes up Roald's trick of eating at every table in the pages' hall to get to know other pages by eating at every table in the cookhouse at Haven to get to know the men she will command? I really think this is an overlooked friendship between two very reserved, subtle people. For two people who don't canonically interact very often, there are so many tiny details that put them on the same wavelength, to the point where I would argue Roald is one of Kel's first friends, besides Neal. Roald socialises with all the pages, but he prefers to sit with Kel and Neal to eat, and he's one of exactly two pages to give Kel a Midwinter gift in her first year. (The other is Neal.) Roald avoids spending extra time with his own yearmates, but he turns up to the study group and brings people with him - in fact, he's a founding member of the group. Kel consistently backs Roald when he refuses to exercise royal privilege when he thinks it isn't appropriate. When Roald finally does decide to exercise some royal privilege, he does it by nominating Kel as spokeswoman for the pages who would like Joren and his friends to stop ruining their Midwinter, thanks a lot. When Kel accompanies Lalasa to Joren's trial, Roald goes with them. When half of Kel's friends ride north to war, she chooses to ride with Roald and Neal (at least until she canât stand the lovesick moping any more). And reserved, uncomplaining Roald chooses Kel to vent to about not being permitted to fight for his country.
They're not friends loudly, like Neal consistently starting shit with anyone who gives Kel shit, or Owen literally throwing himself at her for hugs, but they are legit friends.

the thing about being a homeschool abolition hardliner is that people always want to come to you with some bullshit sob story about how you hate disabled people because they were bullied for being autistic and homeschooling was so amazing for them. and it's just like well unfortunately homeschooling is also a widespread tool of coercive control in child abuse used by christofascists to raise kids without the tools they need to function in the world so that they will always be afraid, dependent, and unable to think critically and discern right from wrong and truth from lies. so unfortunately i do think this is a situation where in order to prevent enormous harm to untold numbers of children those bullied kids who just don't wanna go to school are going to have to suck it up. (and in reality what i always propose is a more robust system of alternative/magnet public schooling set up for kids who are basically on grade level but who DO struggle to thrive in a mainstream setting, but nobody ever wants to hear that, they just want to guilt you for not thinking anyone who ever gets picked on should just get to stay home and play vidya and do all their lessons on zoom. and it's like honestly i don't think you're having this argument in good faith bc you are very much centering hypothetical discomfort you MIGHT HYPOTHETICALLY have experienced over, again, widespread child abuse and neglect. so.)
so i watched the netflix documentary about piper rockelle yesterday and i would like to once again humbly suggest that homeschooling be permanently abolished and perhaps even criminalized
Itâs so frustrating that when thereâs an overwhelmingly common and dangerous phenomenon related to something so you say âHm, seems like a sane and responsible society should ban or regulate this.â And you get hit by a million responses that amount toâŚ
âOh? [X thing] has a documented extremely negative impact on a large group of people?? And youâre critiquing it? Well I did [x thing] and that horrible thing never happened. I guess youâre just PERSONALLY ATTACKING me.â
âHave you considered the nuanced reality that if something is beneficial to me in any way then everyone who has been deeply harmed by it should simply eat shit? Also if they criticize it itâs because they hate me specifically?â
âWhat about those of us who actually ENJOY AND LIKE [x thing] and also feel entitled to never have access to something that I like restricted? Hmm? What about us?â
Itâs not actually possible to have a functioning society where everyone does whatever they want all the time. You canât just trust that your populace is going to do the best possible version of everything. Iâm absolutely sure thereâs a lot of responsible gun owners in the US â unfortunately, the negative societal impact of guns means that in a sane, effective society (which ofc the US isnât) theyâd still be banned. There are some things that are more important than you and what you like and what is beneficial to you. Some things are worse than other things, like objectively worse. Some things are more important than you.
This is the very definition of hyper-individualism. If something is working for you, it must continue. No one else matters. No oneâs suffering could ever be more important than your own.
