we literally have founding documents from 250 years ago that lay out very lofty principles for how people should be treated in our country. and while the number of people who have actually been considered people under those documents has never been complete, it has grown and grown many times over due to people in this country - who were not protected by those documents and who lived in a society that did not treat them like people - nevertheless believing deeply in those aspirations, speaking the language of them, and working hard and successfully to convince reluctant majorities to extend those same rights from 250 years ago to even more people. there are few societies on earth that are so specifically guided by a set of morals with such a long track record of getting truer and truer to them by the day. you throw out all their work out so you can have an excuse not to do it yourself. coward!
