Disclaimer: I have nothing against this user specifically, but I think they're representative of a wider trend which I'd like to talk about. Don't go pester them, it doesn't materially help anyone.
There's a lot to be said about how the average (white) westerner cares more about harm to a dog than mass harm to racialised people or people from the global south.
Why is that, specifically, what made you stop reading? as opposed to everything else? Nothing about how the “transition” in tender is the flesh was at first gradually carried out by the ultra-rich on poor Black Africans for sport, and not out of necessity as the ruling class claim in the text. Nothing about how Tejo treats Jasmine essentially the same way he treated the dogs he euthanised all those years ago, and is enabled to do so by his status as both a man and a free human. Or how he and his wife steal the baby he impregnated her with as their own, in a way reminiscent of residential schools, the Stolen Generations, and other examples of forced assimilation and genocide around the world. Nothing else about systemic butchery of othered and marginalised groups under capitalism and imperialism?
Nah, the off-screen dog death was the most unforgivable part.
I'm reminded of the Palestinian man and his dog who were displaced by Israeli occupation who received messages asking how to help his dog, but not him (if anyone can link me to that post I'd be very grateful).
I'm reminded of the uproar about US law enforcement killing dogs and the mainly unanimous support of initiatives against it, as opposed to law enforcement's murder of Black kids and babies. The murders of baby Kohen Wiley and dog Jameson a day apart in June, with the latter receiving far more public outcry.
"I can excuse racism, but I draw the line at animal cruelty" really isn't a good thing to say. White ass website.
i've read some really gruesome stuff at this point, so i figured tender is the flesh would be no issue. but holy shit the "they have no arms or legs" line literally made me put the book down and stare at the wall for a second. jesus christ on a stick
I understand how people can read Tender is the Flesh and think it's commentary about the cruelty of the meat industry, and it is, to a certain extent. but I really think it's more about how the government/the people in power get to decide who is allowed to be a person. you only have your humanity because the government allows it so. did you all miss the part where they spoke about how the first people to die during the Transition were Black people? how did that make you feel? did you feel anything at all? or did you want to just gloss over that?

reading reviews of Incidents Around The House like “wow all these adult characters sucked” and ripping my hair out like YES!!! THAT’S THE POINT!!!! WHY DO YOU NEED TO AGREE WITH OR LIKE CHARACTERS, ESPECIALLY IN A HORROR SETTING????!!!!

God. GOD.
finished Our Wives Under the Sea and weeping bc she came back. She came back Wrong and knew it wasnt going to be for long and that she was going to change irreversibly and her wife wouldnt understand but she still Came Back. And Miri loves that about her. It takes her a while to come to terms but she does bc she Loves Her so fully, with all of her heart, even when it's time for everything to end
Recommendations from my favorite genre: Queer horror
The Lamb by Lucy Rose - Margot and Mama live in a cottage in the woods, and they eat ”strays”, lost people who come by their home looking for help. Everything changes when a woman named Eden shows up and mama falls in love.
The Starving Saints by Caitlin Starling - a medieval fortress under siege, a starving people, a woman in a tower trying to create a miracle, a lady knight forced to protect her, a disgraced noblewoman looking for revenge and saints showing up in the flesh. Yep, there’s cannibalism in this one too.
Don’t Let the Forest in by CG Drews - toxic and codependent gays at a boarding school with a forest where the horror creatures they wrote and illustrated might be coming to life.
My Darling Dreadful Thing by Johanna Van Veen - Roos lives a dreadful life with her mother, but at least she has Ruth, the ghost and spirit companion only she can see. One day she meets Agnes, a woman like her who has a spirit companion of her own, and she gets whisked away to her haunted manor.
Bunny by Mona Awad - Samantha goes to a literature class with a group of girls who call themselves the bunnies, and one day she gets invited to hang out with them and participate in their ”art”.
Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield - Miri’s wife has finally come back from a disastrous deep-sea expedition, but she has not come back unchanged.
Absolutely baffled by the number of takes on Our Wives Under the Sea that boil down to "Miri didn't love Leah enough." Leah was the only person alive Miri did love; Miri is torn apart with grief this entire book, she is a woman imploding in on herself and while she doesn't always know how to deal with the terrifying and strange ways Leah is changing she is desperate to stay close to her, to find some way to undo what was done. The entire climax of the book is that Miri loves Leah enough to let her go. She loves Leah enough to understand that Leah is suffering, that what they had before cannot be recaptured, and the only way that can end is to put her somewhere out of Miri's reach, and in this heart-wrenching moment of catharsis, Miri herself delivers her loved one to this place she cannot follow, because she knows that is the only place Leah might find peace.
"Passingly, I think that this might always have been inevitable, that perhaps she had always known it but had wanted to hold on for me, for as long as she could."

She, she, she, it is she… It is often she. And in the old songs and in the long nights, she holds him in the softness of her arms, in her arms that are open, in her arms that are wide, that are open, that are always, that must always be open. And in the old ways and in the old laws, this was arranged. All this was arranged. And who arranged it? Did Amel? And that is what it means to be loved. It is Amel. It is always Amel. It is often she… Into the land where the dead are kept, where the dead are worshipped. And why the days without number? And what am I for? What is this for? And what should Amel do with it if not to answer? And why are they throwing stones? And why is she curled on the ground? And why is it wound… And in my eyes is desire, and why is it desire? And why does he tell her what God has said? And why Amel in their mouths? And why must my voice be smooth? And why must I sing so low? And why is she kept? Why must she be kept? And why in this place must she be kept? And what does it mean if you are not asked? And what does it mean if you are not answered? And what is it to see and to know, but to be told… You have not seen. You have not known. And why is her tongue cut out? And why is her death prolonged? And when will it stop? And who will stop it? And why must they, must we, must I, must he, must they, as the millennia, unfold? Why the girl curled? Why her eyes lowered? Why on the side of the road? Why limp in the straw? I am the girl! I am the god! I am the voice! I am the song! I am the night! And I can answer! I can arrange it! I can say rise, and I can say speak! And I am her! And I am she! And I, I, I, I am the answer!
