History (TW: Slavery/SA mention):
Nyx was born on the outskirts of Tevinter to a Dalish elf and a Tevinter soporati. They were making their way to Arlathan Forest to join the Veiljumpers when slavers caught their scent and hunted them down. His mother was killed and his father barely escaped, but he left behind his child, still in his partnerâs arms. Nyxâs original name was Ven'arla. He was only two when he was captured by slavers and sold off to the highest bidder, Danarius. Nyx was abused physically, mentally, and sexually throughout his childhood. His magic was discovered at age four, to where Danarius took even more of a âspecial interestâ in him.
When Nyx turns six, a few elvhen slaves plan an escape. Afraid for their lives and unable to wield weapons, the adults and teens recruited Nyx into their escape attempt as someone to protect them with his magic. At this point, Nyx had little training, but could still control it to some extent. They made it out of the city, but Danarius and his guards caught up to them quickly and cornered them in an abandoned building. When Nyx realized Danarius was among the guards, he grew frightened. The other slaves yelled at him to kill Danarius and when Nyx tried to use his magic, it backfired and shot straight through his body and into three slaves behind him. No one knows how Nyxâs body was able take all that concentrated lightning, but he survived while the other ones hit by his magic perished. This accident left Nyx scarred and unable to walk for months afterwards.
Soon after, Danarius leaves for Kirkwall and does not return. Rumors spread he died and his slaves were quickly rounded up and shipped out to different locations to be sold off. Nyx is among the slaves being transported through Treviso when Fenris finds them and kills the slavers imprisoning them. Once released, the slaves scatter, most of them scared of Nyx or refusing to even consider taking him. Fenris, left with an 8-year-old child, decides to contact the Crows. He meets Caterina and asks that she take him in and train him to become a Crow to avoid death on the streets. Caterina begrudgingly accepts Nyx. This is the first time Nyx meets Lucanis and Illario. Viago, being ten years older than him and still under Caterina's jurisdiction, is ordered to take Nyx under his wing. Viago and Nyx become attached at the hip with almost a sibling or even a romantic relationship (AU dependent).
Nyx doesnât speak for the first few months during his time with the Crows, and many believe he is mute. Once he starts to thrive under the harsh training, he begins to speak to others. Nyx had the best training from Viago once Viago creates the de Riva house, and while he was bullied, his mentor chose Nyx as his protege. When Nyx is 17, he meets Illario Dellamorte, who begins to show interest in him beyond platonic. Nyx refuses his advances, as he doesn't want something shallow between them. They become fast friends. At 19, Nyx is sent out on his first contract alone, his final test before becoming a fully-fledged Crow. The mission goes sideways because Nyx grows cocky. He gets the kill, but not before the target slashed a knife across his face, catching his lip and leaving behind a nasty wound from his lip to his ear.
When he arrives back home, he gets berated by Viago and as heâs heading back to the de Riva estate, Illario catches him. Illario, thinking Nyx was severely injured due to being covered in blood, pulls him aside privately to make sure he was okay. After he patches up Nyx, they share their first kiss. Illario and Nyx get into a tentative relationship that involves a lot of secret meetings and fleeting glances. Two years into the relationship, Illario tells Nyx he was using him and breaks things off, leaving him devastated. He delves back into training and contracts to keep his mind off of everything.
A year later, Nyx takes a contract in Minrathous. The contract is for a slave owner and a mage. While sneaking in to kill him, he accidentally runs into a Shadow Dragon operation trying to free the targetâs slaves. After some hostility and questioning, Nyx agrees to help them free the slaves before he kills his target. The plan goes great and they free all the slaves; meanwhile Nyx kills his target flawlessly. The Viper, who was leading the mission, invites Nyx to join the Shadow Dragons. Nyx wants to, and informs Viago. After Viago agrees, on the condition that Nyx accepts all contracts that are in Minrathous, Nyx stays in Minrathous and joins the Shadow Dragons. He returns home a year and a half before Veilguard and thatâs where he gets into trouble with the Antaam and meets Varric.

"Family/Friends" for Day 1 of @illarioappreciation
Crows celebrating at the casino. Masks, drinks, smiles... but are these people truly friends?
For the first day of Illario Week, I imagined Illario, hiding his emotions behind a mask, a few months after he betrayed Lucanis, his family. As the bittersweet taste of his "victory" lingers on his tongue, he tries to drink it away.
(Despite Andarateia and the other Crows believing Lucanis is dead, the show must go on. A casino must remain in action, to not blow its cover.)
I borrowed some of my friend's Crows OCs for the background!
The purple one is Circe De Riva, she belongs to @sammie-scribbles âĽ
In blue, we have Ambroise De Riva, he belongs to @melody-loka âĽ
In red, it is Morwenna De Riva, she belongs to Ambrosia âĽ
In my original doodle, they were just generic Antivan Crows ⢠haha I was happy to incorporate them into this piece

Rook: I take this man under my custody!
(They are not friends yet, not even close. But Rook is ready to give Illario chance. Even against the will of his family.)
I guess my game will be pretty attached to my headcanon, sorry for that^^â (itâs because I miss my beloved love fools T_T) But Iâll try to keep focus on Illario))

Caterina was still annoyed Lucanis and Amara had insisted on an extended honeymoon, spending over a month away from Treviso. It hadn't mattered that Lucanis had gone above and beyond to make sure House accounts were settled, contracts completed, and redundancies in place to handle any unforeseen emergencies during his absence. It had also been part of the negotiations leading up to the wedding - Caterina would get her grand ceremony and reception befitting the status of their House, and Lucanis and Amara would get time to themselves after.
So she was annoyed, until Amara and Lucanis shared their happy news.
Talk quickly turned to their future childâs training, Caterina running roughshod with assumptions that had already been repeatedly refuted and Amara had stepped in and -
Well, that had been the end of any pleasantness.Â
After Amara had said her piece, she decided to retire to their apartment on the other side of Treviso before she - as she put it -Â âraised all the dead in the canals to make sure his grandmother heard her this time.â Lucanis had escorted her home and - once assured she was settled - returned to the Villa to ensure there was nothing demanding his immediate attention.
He hadnât wanted to - curling up with Amara was vastly preferable to trekking back across Treviso and triaging the correspondence that had piled up in his absence - but he would not let it be said he was shirking his duty or that Caterina had chased them out of the house.
Thankfully, the work was not as bad as he feared. His precautions before their trip had done their job. There was also no sign of his grandmother. He dared to relax a bit, to think that there would be no more difficult conversations or unpleasantness tonight, until Illario darkened the doorway just as he was ready to escape his study and go home.
A very inebriated Illario, Lucanis noted, based on the heady scent clinging to him and the goblet he held as he waltzed into the room. He had been at dinner when they told Caterina Amara was expecting and had promptly made himself scarce once tempers began to flare.
Lucanis didn't blame him - he hadn't wanted to stay for that either.
Illario stopped just in front of his desk, blinking lazily at the neatly stacked paperwork. âLeaving so soon?â
âYes,â Lucanis said, standing up. âThere is nothing that cannot wait till morning.â
Illario tisked softly, throwing his arm around Lucanisâ shoulder as he tried to move past. âNo. You cannot leave before I toast your return, Cousin. Dinner ended so abruptly, I didnât have the chance.â
Lucanis considered his options, tamping down Spiteâs knee jerk desire to fight their way out of the loose hold Illario had on them. Letting Illario say whatever he needed to say was likely the fastest path to getting home to Amara. âIf you must.â
Illario grinned. âTo the perfect son of House Dellamorte,â he said, toasting with his mostly empty glass. âCompleted an impossible contract, got himself an unconventional but brilliantly connected wife, and even managed to do his marital duty as soon as she signed the marriage contract.â Illario threw back the rest of his drink with a grimace. âYou know Caterina assumed my future nibblings were going to spring from the womb spinning daggers, ready to continue our glorious legacy, but now -â Lucanis watched warily as he gestured, thrusting the cup around with such force that he feared they would both topple over.
âNow, I find out you told her no.â Abruptly, Illario shifted, grabbing Lucanis by the shoulder and turning so they were face to face. âYou told her no! You are capable of standing up to her and her mad expectations!âÂ
âWould you prefer I not?â Lucanis asked, shrugging off his cousinâs hand.
âNo. No. You have to. Going to be a Father, you need to protect them, you need - I just -â Illario muttered something, turning away and flopping into the nearest chair. He tossed his cup on the side table. It landed lopsided, teetering on an edge before rolling to the floor.
Lucanis picked up the cup, trying to ignore the tight awful anxious anticipation spurred by Illarioâs words - the same demon that had gripped him during dinner. That had been haunting him since they returned to Treviso. The harsh reality of what bringing a child into this life and family was going to look like. He hoped his voice was steady enough to reply or - failing that - Illario too drunk to note any slip. âIf you have something to say, say it.â
Illario stared up at the ceiling. âFor Rook. You were willing to stand up to Caterina for Rook.â
The statement sat in the space between them, the unspoken shadows beneath unbearably loud. Neither looked at the other, Illario still intent on the ceiling, Lucanis staring towards the wood paneled desk without seeing it.
He was tired. Probably too tired for this conversation. He was definitely too sober for it, though that was easily solved by the brandy in the hidden compartment behind his desk. He secured a cup for himself and one for Illario and sat next to him, sipping the drink and trying to order his thoughts.
This wasnât getting him any closer to his warm bed and wife, but there was a fragile tension here. Lucanis was sure walking away would be making a decision about his familyâs future - and who was still a part of it. What had seemed simple and joyous out in the greater world with Amara at his side felt suffocating and threatening and real in the shadows of his family home, in the echoing legacy of all their ghosts.
In the disapproval of his Grandmother.
In the rueful gaze of the cousin he loved as a brother who had done his best to kill him and who was asking why Lucanis hadnât been able to fight for the family he had the way he was fighting for the family he was making.
âI wasnât able to at first,â he said, once his cup was nearly empty.
âHmm?â
âStand up to Caterina. Amara called her out on the comments. I was - just there.â
âYou made it clear where you stood,â Illario said.
âI should have done more. I should have said something as soon as she broached the topic.â
Illario leaned back, swirling the liquid in his cup around. âI donât know, I think your Rook enjoys having demons to tame.â
âI should have been able to do it sooner,â Lucanis said, turning to look at his cousin.
Illario froze, then snorted, waving the words away, but there was a thickness to his reply. âShe made damn sure you couldn't. We couldn't.â
âStill,â Lucanis said. He hoped Illario heard the apology there. He also expected his cousin understood why Lucanis wouldnât actually apologize.
He had tried to kill him, after all.
Illario looked at him, meeting his eyes for a moment and giving a slight nod. When Lucanis stood, he did the same.
âI will need help,â Lucanis said. âI do not know how to be a Father.â
âNo one does. Besides, I get to be their TĂo. Spoil them. Show them how to get into trouble.â
Lucanis caught the slight upward hitch as he spoke. Illario didnât quite make it a question, but Lucanis answered as if it were. âYes, you get to be their TĂo. Maker help us.â
Illario smiled. His actual smile, not the mask he wore so often. âYouâre going to be good at this. And if you arenât, Rook will kill you - so you do not have to worry about messing your children up too badly.â
âThat is actually a comfort,â Lucanis said. And it was - knowing Amara would hold him accountable and that the one person who truly understood the horrors of his own childhood would do the same. He held up his glass. âAnother toast, before I leave - since I did not have a drink for the last one.â
Illario dutifully held out his glass.
âTo House Dellamorte,â Lucanis said solemnly. âBloody and broken but breathing.â
âWe will do better by our children,â Lucanis said quietly as he finished his drink.
âWell, we cannot do any worse,â Illario replied wryly, doing the same.

Thank you @datvcompanionweeks for hosting đ Amazing Lucanis border by @gutz-ingellvar đ Time is a social construct and it is always Lucanis week in my heart. (also, it was the right call to let this sit until I actually had time to tackle the brother/cousins and their inability to be emotionally vulnerable with each other đ )

Old sketch I redid recently. My favorite part of romancing Solas is interrogating him relentlessly and he doesnât mind because heâs wisdom and he loves to answer questions :3
Ulrich was hired as Dorianâs body guard bc of his military dad trying to push him to positions that would give him a higher social status. Thatâs how he got recruited into the Shadow Dragons. Dorian dresses him. A respectable Tevinter magister canât be seen walking around with a - and I quote - âwet beastâ at his heel.
