“Victoria. She’ll come for me one day. Alice will see what she decides and we’ll be ready.”
Your gaze settled on Sevika’s lips as she spoke, her eyes peering from the painting of the volturi to return to yours.
“I could protect you.” You started, and at this Sevika smiled, beckoning closer. “If you change me.”
“Y/N..you already do protect me.” She assured you.
Her hand slipped around your waist to pull you closer, the chill from her forehead draping over yours. Your hand rested on her chest, fiddling with the collar of her white button up as she continued.
“You’re my only reason to stay alive—if that’s what I am.” Her breath fanned your nose. “But it’s my job to protect you.”
You let out a small laugh, shaking your head. You weren’t surprised her answer to change you was no, she made it clear it wasn’t up for negation anytime soon.
“From everyone..except my sister.”
From behind you the door slid open, a chirpy excited voice filling your ears as you glanced back.
“It’s tiiiimeee! It’s time, it’s time, it’s time!” Alice exclaimed.
You smiled as she clasped your hands, a cooling chill that coiled your wrists as she pulled you towards the doorway. A melody played the second you reached the top of the staircase, lips parting at the sight in front of you. There stood Esme, Carlisle, Jasper, Rosalie and Emmett in the midst of a beautiful assortment of candles and rose bouquets. A three layer blue and white striped cake sat on a table near Esme and Carlisle, various small gifts nestling nearby. Alice beamed at you as she led you down the stairs, beige candles aligning the shelves on your way down. Carlisle approached you with a gentle smile, the brown in his irises bleeding into a bright hazel.
“Sorry about all of this.” He grabbed your hands. “We tried to rein Alice in.” He solemned with a light chuckle.
“As if that were even possible.” Esme smiled, stepping closer to wrap her arms around you.
“Happy birthday Bella.” She cooed, nearly squeezing the life out of you.
“Thank you..” You said, hearing the click of a camera behind you,
Turning around, you saw Alice holding the camera that Charlie had gifted you. You squinted at her and she started to speak to ease your confusion.
“I found it in your bag—you mind?” She asked.
You shook your head no, giving her a small smile. “It’s fine.”
“Dating an older woman..hot.”
You ignored Emmett’s comment when you felt a whoosh of air, Alice returning from the table to stand in front of you. She held out a small purple box that was wrapped in a thin white bow, Alice informing you that the gift was from Rosalie.
“This one’s from Rosalie.” She cheesed, handing the gift to Rosalie.
Rosalie stared at you, handing the box over. “It’s a necklace. Alice picked it out.”
You smiled softly, catching a glimpse of the large pendant that hung from her neck.
She nodded, not making eye contact with you before turning towards Emmett. Alice pulled Sevika towards you, raising the camera up towards you both.
You smiled at the camera shyly, feeling Sevika’s lips brush against the top of your hair. Sevika’s hands found your waist to pull you closer, your fingers intertwining with hers. Beside you Alice walked towards the table, coming back with a bigger box.
“This one’s from Emmett.” She cheesed.
You thanked her, grabbing the box—which was surprisingly lighter than you had expected. You shook the box to prove to yourself you weren’t crazy, but there was nothing in it. You turned behind you to look at Emmett who stood beside Rosalie.
“Already installed it in your truck. Finally a decent sound system for that piece of crap—“
You cut Emmett off, raising a playful brow. “Hey don’t—don’t hate on the truck.” You giggled.
Alice laughed behind you making you turn around, and this time she handed you a small envelope.
“Open Esme and Carlisle’s!”
You smiled at the gift, Carlisle’s voice making you turn around.
“Just a little something to brighten your day.” He said.
“Yes, you’ve been looking kind of pale lately.”
You scrunched your eyebrows in confusion, glancing down at your skin. Rich mahogany, same as it has always been. You smiled at her joke, playing with the shiny fabric of the envelope. You tried to pry it open, feeling Sevika’s eyes on you as you did so. After a few attempts your finger slipped and you sucked in a tight breath.
“Ow..” you grimaced, seeing the scarlet drip down your nail bed.
“Paper cut..” You brushed it off to look up at Sevika, before turning back to watch a drop of dark wine liquid spill onto the beige carpet.
You glanced up momentarily, feeling something switch, and before you could think, a large hand found your stomach, pushing you back. Sevika’s stature furthered from your view as your body was violently flung into the table of bouquets, a sharp sting now in your arm as glass shattered around you. Your hand rested on your forehead, grimacing as your fingers snaked through the carpet to hold yourself up. Animalistic growls were heard, vicious snarls and grunts were heard while you glanced at the large cut in your arm.
“Jas, Jas! It’s okay, it’s just a little….blood.” Alice said.
You looked up at the group of vampires, seeing Carlisle and Emmett hold onto Jasper. His face was horrific, eyes now bleeding into an abystic black as he snarled. You rolled the torn fabric of your jacket over the open wound, the white fabric now drenched in a crimson.
“Get Jasper out of here.” Carlisle said to Emmett and Alice.
In a blink he was next to you, large hands gripping onto your arm to assess the damage. You gasped at the feel of contact, his fingers pressing against your skin to ease the bleeding. Your eyes went to Sevika who stood there motionless, Alice excusing herself shortly after Jasper was taken away.
“I’m— I’m sorry I can’t.”
The short haired brunette skipped out of the room, your gaze never leaving Sevika’s who looked right past you, focusing on the blood that dripped down your arm.
“I’ll have to stitch this up in my office.” Carlisle said.
You glanced down at your arm, then back at Sevika who remained unmoving.
“Check on Jasper. I’m sure he’s very upset with himself and I doubt he’ll listen to anyone but you right now.”
Carlisle looked up at Sevika, her expression blank as he called her name softly. Finally she looked at you, before blinking, rolling her eyes as she turned away.

Classical music played softly on the record player, the silence stretching between you and Carlisle as he placed the last stitch. You ignored the sharp needle embedding itself in your skin, shaking your head lazily.
“I never wanted to have a party.”
“It’s not your fault.” He responded. “Jasper hasn’t been away from human blood as long as the rest of us.”
“How do you do it?” You asked him, holding your arm steady.
He looked at you, golden irises boring themselves into you. “Years and years of practice.” He smiled.
“Did you ever think of just doing it the easy way?” You asked, staring at the lamplight that glistened on the button of his shirt.
“No. I knew who I wanted to be. I wanted to help people.” He looked away momentarily to grab a pair of scissors, severing the small line of thread.
“It brings me happiness.” He continued. “Even if I am damned regardless.”
At this you squinted, raising a brow at him. “Damned?” You pushed. “Like hell?”
He gave you a brief glance, going back to his work.
“Carlisle you can’t be damned. You couldn’t it’s impossible.” You assured him.
“Thank you, Y/N. You’ve always been very..gracious about us.” He said.
Quickly the pieces snapped into place at Carlisle’s statement of damnation. He thinks he’s damned to hell, a monstrosity without a soul. Silence was fleeting as you spoke up.
“So that’s it? That’s why she won’t change me?” You asked him.
“Imagine the situation in reverse, hm?” He said, gently brushing your chin. He stepped away, to light a stick on fire, his words finding their way to you.
“If you believed as Sevika does, could you take away her soul?”
He dropped the stick into the bowl of bloodied gauze, before blowing it out. You turned your head to the burning fabric, staring at the dancing flames. Sevika entered the room, telling you she’d take you home. The drive to your house was silent, awkward, filled with an unknown absence. She pulled up to the curb in front of your house, the car screeching to a halt. You glanced over at her as she turned the key, deciding to push your luck.
“You can’t protect me, from everything Sevika.” You said, glancing at the array of trees through the window shield then back at her.
“At some point something’s gonna separate us. An accident, or old age. As long as I’m human..” You trailed off, fiddling with your nail beds.
“The only solution is to change me.” You looked over at her.
You watched as her fingers tapped against the dashboard, a muscle in her jaw clicking. “That’s not a solution, Y/N. That’s a tragedy.”
You bit the inside of your cheek, biting down on the skin. “You’re not gonna want me when I look like a grandma.”
The door clicked open as Sevika stepped out and you felt your heart hammer in your chest. You turned to open the passenger door before she beat you to it. You stepped out slowly, her gaze burning into yours.
“Y/N. Do you not understand my feelings for you at all?” She asked.
You stared up at her as you sat back down on the seat. “Carlisle told me. How you feel about your soul..I don’t believe that.”
Sevika stared at you while she listened.
“So stop worrying about mine.” You urged her.
“You should go inside.” She spoke evenly.
You stepped from the car towards her, closing the door behind you. She backed away as you neared her and only when you stopped walking so did she. You blinked, looking up at your girlfriend who held a pained expression.
“It’s still my birthday.” You said after a beat. “So can I ask one thing?”
She stared at you, not saying anything.
“Kiss me. Please.” You begged softly.
Slowly her hands found the sides of your cheek, her head lowering before her lips met yours. You gasped into her mouth, fingers resting on her jaw as your mouth moved with hers. You tried to bring her closer, to ease the ache of your stomach, not being able to shake this weird feeling. She gasped as your hand found her waist to pull her in, her hands clasping over your arms to softly push you away. She rested her forehead against yours, not meeting your gaze as her breath labored.
“I love you.” You told her.
She didn’t raise her eyes to meet yours as she repeated the words back to you, turning away.
“Hey—“ you said, grabbing her arm.
She sighed, turning back to you.
“Will you come tonight? I’ll unlock my window.” You asked.
She didn’t give you an answer, forcing a small smile before she gently pulled her hand back. She turned away to walk, and you watched her body disappear past the trees. She didn’t visit you that night and the next morning she hadn’t showed up to drive you to school, or bothered showing up at all—none of them did. Your day was boring and bleak, a pit forming in your belly that hadn’t gone away since you closed your eyes last night. On your drive home, you swallowed the lump in your throat, taking the key out of the ignition. When you stepped out of the vehicle, your eyes caught Sevika. There she stood, gaze towards the freshly mowed grass, still wearing the white button up from last night. You smiled as you exited the car, but she didn’t look up at you, her body made no movement to acknowledge your presence you knew she knew was there.
You approached her cautiously, slowly and only then did she look up at you.
“Just..come take a walk with me.” She said softly.
She led you into the woods without another word, finally stopping at the base of an old tree trunk. You waited for her to speak and when she did, the knot in your stomach tightened.
“We have to leave forks.” She stated.
“Why?” You said, stepping closer.
“Carlisle’s supposed to look ten years older than he looks. People are starting to notice.”
You blinked, watching her expression. Still pained, now distant. You licked your lips, biting them.
“Okay I—I just gotta think of something to say to Charlie.” You said.
Sevika’s jaw clenched at this, her eyes boring into yours, her silence speaking for itself.
“When you say ‘we’…” you trailed off, afraid to finish that sentence.
“I mean my family and myself.” She said.
You looked at her, blinking. You shook your head, stepping closer to look up at her. “Vika, what happened with Jasper..it was nothing—“
She cut you off, stepping back. “You’re right it was nothing. Nothing but what I always expected, and nothing compared to what could have happened.”
She didn’t look at you when she spoke, staring down at the broken pile of sticks beside you.
“You just don’t belong in my world, Y/N.”
“What?” You breathed, stepping closer to her. You reached out a hand, placing it on the side of her face. “I belong with you.”
She grabbed your wrist, gently pulling your hand away. Her coldness felt more prominent—more permanent this time. “No you don’t.”
You scoffed, looking at her. “I’m coming with you.”
“Y/N I don’t want you..to come.”
You stared back at her, the knot forming into a pit that clawed its way towards your throat. “You don’t want me?”
“If it’s not too much to ask, can you just promise me one thing?”
You scoffed, looking anywhere but her face, afraid she’d disappear the second you took your eyes off her.
“Don’t do anything reckless for Charlie’s sake.”
Before you could respond, she continued. “I’ll promise something to you in return. This is the last time you’ll ever see me. I won’t come back, and you can go on with your life without any interference from me.”
Your head started to spin, your heart raced, fingers pinching at your thighs to make sure you weren’t dreaming.
“It’ll be like I never existed I promise.” She concluded.
“If this is about my soul, take it I don’t want it without you, Sevika!” You shouted.
“It’s not about your soul.” She murmured. “You’re just not good for me.”
“I’m not good enough for you.” You said, ignoring the stinging at the edges of your eye.
“I’m just sorry I let this go on for so long.”
“Sevika—please…don’t.” You begged her.
She stepped closer, the familiar chill fanning over your skin as she brought you closer. Her lips grazed against your forehead, her shallow breath a melody you’d hope never ended. You convinced yourself this was a prank, a stupid, cruel prank but a joke nonetheless. Her hand rested on the side of your cheek and before your hands could reach up to hers, she was gone.
You stood in the desolate green, eyes searching the corners and crevices for her.
“Vika!” You called again, your legs starting to move forward.
You called her name countless times, pushing past the fallen leaves and climbing over bark, ignoring the scratches that now painted your wrists. Your calls became cries, desperate now as you refused to let the truth settle. She’d never leave you, she couldn’t leave you.
You walked until your legs felt numb, her name falling dry on dull lips. The sun was a fleeting thing, your vision blurred with a tearful void. You tripped after a few more steps, your body collapsing due to exhaustion. You lay there in the silent still, Sevika’s name still spilling from your mouth.
