For many people under guardianship, in order to have sex or or see romantic partners or even see friends, you need the permission of your guardian. Guardianship is, whether legal or not, all too often a complete social and civil death*. Imagine having to call up your parents in order to legally have sex? Or go to the mall? Or attend religious services? That's the reality for thousands, if not millions, of disabled people across the country. *Some guardianship statutes have limited the power of guardians over the people they have guardianship over. However, the culture of guardianship still allows routine abuses of bodily autonomy on a daily basis--including forced sterilization.
