Revealing the ignorance of my youth here, but who is this and what is she known for?
Anita Sarkeesian, feminist who interpreted media under a feminist lens. She did a series about video games and she was the subject of targeted harassment. That was the start of gamergate
Minor correction, the start of gamergate was based around a different reporter, Zoe Quinn, but they were both absolutely violently threatened over their involvement in video game criticism and development. A hate campaign was started by Quinn's ex-boyfriend when he wrote a post falsely accusing them of dating video game journalists in order to receive positive reviews on their own game, Depression Quest, which led other bad actors to accuse all women in the industry (Zoe identified as female at the time) of perceived sexual immorality. Anita Sarkeesian's brilliant Youtube series Tropes vs Women in Video Games (which everyone should watch, right now) sparked a particular nerve for criticizing popular games of killing and/or victimizing any important female character (there is a CHILLING bit that borders on ludicrous where she describes the plots of a seemingly endless parades of games as "In [title], [male player character's] wife dies, and you then have to rescue [his] daughter."). That series did actually make a huge change in the industry, especially when touted by progressive legacy developers like Tim Schafer (Monkey Island, Psychonauts), who went on to expand hiring in his company to front women and minority voices, but the shift didn't really show for a long time and echoes of the sexism that plagues the industry at its core are still rampant.
Thanks for the correction! I was like 8-10 years old when this all went down (2014-2016) so I only know vaguely about it. Iβm still learning about this.
Zoe Quinn also has a book called Crash Overdrive, which I feel should be required reading for literally anyone using the internet in any capacity, especially as more and more things get moved to online spaces, and especially for people who use the internet for their livelihoods. It's a fairly short read (I read the entire book in a single day, although I will note this was during and for grad school, so actual reading time may vary for normal, non-grad-student readers), and can be a bit depressing--Quinn details the years of harassment they received due to gamergate, it's not a pleasant read, but I do think it's an absolutely necessary book to understand what happened and why and how, and Quinn has a surprisingly resilient sense of resolve come the end of the book, which details all the safety measures someone can and should take with their online activity.
If you can't get out to your local library to borrow the book, you can also find it here on the Internet Archive (though it looks like the lending is limited? it doesn't appear to be an open text at least, so a library might be your best bet if you can't purchase the book). Of all the books I was required to buy and read for college classes, this is probably the most important and impactful, and it's the only one I'd strongly encourage everyone to read for themselves.
a warning to any and all apollo justice owners because i've seen a bit of this floating about! it might look cute and auraful when your apollo justice starts applying random bandages to his eyes and wearing jackets over his shoulders but this is NOT healthy behaviour and you should NOT be encouraging it :( this is actually a sign of great distress in your apollo justice and you should consider enriching his diet with things like trusted loved ones (ESPECIALLY trucys if you can get one) and truth-tellers in order to make him feel more comfortable otherwise he might slide into even less healthy behaviour like getting caught in explosions </3 take care of your apollo justice! he might say he's fine but you should still keep an eye on his body language for signs that he's imitating kristoph gavin!
Kind of felt cheated that this didn't have any payoff btw :( cmon he could have been the villain or the villain's lover or involved in the plot somehow ESPECIALLY since he's a treasury officer?? And it seemed to be somewhat foreshadowed with the Apoth girl who Din ended up having to go on a whole mission with complete with unwanted comments about his anatomy
like they were setting up a pattern of "Din making dumb decisions (sleeping with strangers who he will probably have to work with in the future) and it coming to bite him in the ass" like this mysterious grieving man had so much potential for a dramatic villain reveal or a solid B-plot idk if I'm going insane
Like the specificity of him being a treasury officer and grieving someone is already setting up a mystery and speaking curiousity but it's not even a red herring it's just never mentioned again :(

you cannot make a post about how men put women in certain boxes without someone going "but what if i love the box? what if i've decided that it's comfortable in the box? are you gonna tell me i'm not ALLOWED to like the box? not very feminist of you to police a woman's decisions... maybe you'd be less ugly and miserable if you stopped talking about the box LMFAO #Girlboss #MyBox<3"
#and its like. 'what if ive decided its comfortable to be in the box' it is always going to be more comfortable to be in the box #they will reward you for staying in the box and punish you for trying to leave it #that doesnt mean the box is like. a good place to be β @butchfaith
The way the dialogue immediately turns into snarky banter the moment these two are together
They're besties :)
Toph's dog is called Badger!
for me the Tainted Cup without Ana Dolabra is like a solid 7/10 but veering towards a 6, because as a connoisseur of murder mysteries I found it solidly written but nothing special.
And the world building is great but also tedious at times. and the one romance plotline, while sweet, was so minor it came out of nowhere and would not have changed anything if it didn't happen. And the main character's inner monologue was charming but also at times insufferable. The world is very rich in the fantastical elements while being grounded in the gritty realities of this world but also there are weird anachronisms and turns of phrase that don't fit the fantasy setting sometimes.
And overall it did strike enough of a balance between the good and the bad with the competent writing that I liked the book as a whole
With Ana, though? This gets elevated to 9/10 to me, no joke. Crazy eccentric genius old lady truly fixes everything I didn't like about it.
Like yeah I pretty much figured out the whole the culprit was a few chapters before the MC finds out but Ana also did and is just choosing to wait for the most chaotic moment to reveal everything! (And ruined everyone's day in the process, what an icon)
Ana literally makes it a hobby to research all the most complicated aspects of the world and enjoys infodumping and making deductions about it and being weird while doing it so it's always fun to learn new things about the world from her
The funniest part of the romantic plotline was when Ana was harassing the poor love interest man while excitedly info-dumping and the MC rescues him from her
The MC is at his funniest when at Ana's side and tbh it turns from a gritty fantasy murder mystery to a buddycop comedy when they're together I love their relationship I love their dynamic I love how he spends the whole book trying to hide his dyslexia from her and she's like "I am literally a detective I knew from the start??" They're so fun!!
and yeah it's kind of anachronistic but it's also very funny when Ana scandalised everyone by saying fuck and having a potty mouth in inappropriate times
i love how Ana is allowed to be weird and creepy and eccentric and also solve the case without ever stepping foot in the crime scene she is truly the character of all time I need to know everything about her now
(Tbh part of the reason I found the romance plotline so weak was because the mentor/mentee dynamic Ana has with Din was so much richer and more interesting in comparison. Like immediately following the scene where the love interest tenderly wipes blood off the MC's face we get a scene where Ana scolds him for being reckless, showing her worry and care for him in a much more tender scene imo)
fujoshis who are not that into men or not into men at all are very funny to me. I loveeeee reading explicit fanfiction about two guys having sex. i see a shirtless guy in real life and iβm like okay so who asked for that

Din you are such a FREAK for this description and I LOVE you for it!!!!
I think I'm in love with this woman
Don't really talk about vocaloids much here but man Kaai Yuki's voice-bank is so perfect for singing sad songs and even the happy/funny/weird songs she sings always has this hint of childlike melancholy in them and the melancholic songs are SO GOOD because of this
I have NEVER found a cover of a kaai yuki song that I liked over the og bc it's always missing that hint of flat robotic-childlike-melancholy to the singing that adds so much character to the song.
Just to give an idea of what I mean here's ikanaide sung by Kaai Yuki Vs the project sekai version
More stuff from my karafami x aa au where local college kid Apollo is deeply unsettled by his crush on a Middle-Aged Hobo Phoenix Wright (who is like, 29 years old tops atp)
(also to my non-karafami moots these are all one-for-one canon scenes in Famires Iko btw)
Thge visions are plaguing me
