Ventus & Kairi: Children of Fate
Ventus and Kairi are both hearts of pure light.
Ventus was chosen by the Master to be the Harbinger of Darkness.
Kairi on the other hand, as a Princess of Heart has the power to push Darkness back.
Xehanort unlocked the Darkness that melded with Ventus's heart to birth Vanitas. He wanted to use them to forge the X-blade.
Xehanort had Maleficent capture the seven Princesses to summon Kingdom Hearts.
After Ventus damaged his heart in the battle with Vanitas and Destiny Islands fell to darkness, both Ventus and Kairi both hid their hearts inside of Sora.
At the end of BBS, Ventus is forced to merge with Vanitas to forge the x-blade. Similarly, in the most recent Khux update, Ventus intends to merge his pure Light with Darkness to give it a vessel so it can be destroyed.
Meanwhile, Kairi's pure light has been used to purify Sora as a heartless, to chain together Sora's memories and to sustain Sora's heart from fading away, enabling him to traverse the Demon Tide to rescue the other guardians. (Possibly also partly responsible for revealing Riku's true form to Sora in KH2 and helping Sora open the Door to Light)
Speaking of the Demon Tide, Kairi's light was the only one unable to be defeated by the darkness.
Ventus was never meant to be a member of the Dandelions, let alone a Union Leader, taking the spot of Strelitzia, while on the other hand Kairi represents the goal of the dandelions much better (her symbol is star + she's the light = Starlight, which was the chess piece for the light of the past). She kept the light alive and helped Sora defeat the darkness of Master Xehanort.
Ventus was meant to absorb darkness, while Kairi was meant to expel it.
Ventus was the False Dandelion of the Past &
Kairi is the True Dandelion of the Present/Future
When Apprentice Xehanort shipped off Kairi, whom he speculated to be a Princess of Heart, he did with the hope of her resonating with a keyblade wielder.
Apprentice Xehanort originally lost all of his former two hosts' memories, but after Ansem the Wise searched his heart, bits and pieces of his memories returned to him over time. These memories were of Master Xehanort.
(Restatement) In BBS, Master Xehanort needed the "keyblade wielder" of pure light Ventus to merge with Vanitas of pure darkness to "Bear of the X-blade" to open Kingdom Hearts.
Alternatively, as a second resort, he ordered Maleficent to capture the "Princesses of Heart" in order to forge the keyblade of hearts.
In 0.2, Terra informs Aqua (between BBS & KH1) that Xehanort is still looking for Ventus. Whether or not this is before or after the birth of Ansem SOD or Xemnas, Apprentice Xehanort's heart was acting on behalf of those fragmented memories. Such as Ansem SOD working with Maleficent to get the princesses and Xemnas forming the organization for 13 darknesses.
Apprentice Xehanort wanted Kairi's heart to resonate with the heart of Ventus, who just so happened to have hid inside of Sora's heart at the time.
Ventus and Kairi were the most important tools for Xehanort's plans.
Evident by the fact that during the keyblade Graveyard scene, the first two targets Terranort went after was Ventus and then Kairi.
