Sony after realizing that everyone loves Venom as an inter-species rom-com and marketing as a romantic comedy in the new trailer:
writers: *intentionally write villain as sympathetic*
fans: *sympathize with villain*
the purity police on tumblr dot com:Ā
For everyone on this post asking which villains Iām talking about/what kind: this post was written especially about the all villains that you particularly hate, and it was written to spite you, personally.
Additionallyā¦
Writers: *didnāt write the villain as obviously sympathetic, but gave them a couple of experiences and powerful emotions that some people share and thus relate to, while making the hero too perfect and sweet to necessarily be relatable to those people*
People: *write AUs and the like to explore their own more sympathetic version of the villain and potential redemptions*

Tips for Writing Fight Scenes
Keep them short and fast paced. This will keep them exciting, especially if you use short sentences to establish the fightās fast pace. Plus, itās unrealistic to have characters fighting each other for too long. Fights are exhausting, so they usually only last a few minutes (note that this does not apply to battles, only fights between a fairly small number of characters).
Experiment with unconventional weapons when possible and, even if you donāt want toĀ do that, at least have different characters use different weapons. Not everyone is likely to fight with their bare hands or a sword. Consider letting your characters use weapons that arenāt used as often in fiction such as battle axes or improvised weapons that are only limited by your imagination and the resources your characters have available. Of course, you should make sure the weapons your characters use suit the time period and setting. Your characters shouldnāt have access to things that havenāt been invented yet, so make sure you do your research if youāre writing historical fiction.
Donāt focus on peopleās thoughts or have them talk too much. That should help you keep things fast paced.
Show the effects of charactersā injuries. For example, a character who has hurt their leg might avoid putting weight on it. Little details like this emphasize that the injured characterās safety is at stake while also letting the reader know that injuries have lasting, important consequences in your story. Donāt shy away from having other characters take advantage of these injuries. This is a great opportunity to show which characters are willing to fight dirty.
On that note, give your characters different fighting styles. Not everyone fights the same way. Some people fight dirty while others donāt. Also, peopleās fighting styles naturally differ because they have different strengths and weaknesses. For example, an agile character might quickly dart in to hit their opponent before swiftly retreating while a slower, more bulky character might want to stay close to their opponent for the duration of the fight and overwhelm them with their strength. Keep in mind that charactersā emotions can alter their fighting style. This is especially true when characters get really mad as that tends to make them more likely to fight aggressively and recklessly.
Keep charactersā goals in mind. Characters donāt always want the same outcome from a fight. One character might want to kill their opponent (and therefore fights viciously, without any mercy) whereas the other character might just want to incapacitate their opponent by knocking them out (and therefore holds back to a degree). Possible goals include killing their opponent, incapacitating them, talking them down, and creating an opportunity to flee. These are by no means the only goals your characters might have while theyāre fighting, but I figured Iād give you some food for thought since each of these goals would feasibly lead a character to behave in very different ways.

general techniques to avoid gross shipping of your characters
have most characters be non-minors, around the same age range. this is mostly to minimize underage nonsense.
while family relationships are important, save them as background elements, explored every now and then. focus mainly on the bonds of non-related characters and how their different backgrounds play off each other.
limit the overly edgy tone, where pain and suffering are near-romanticized. try to emphasize wholesomeness, health, and the various ways characters can have good relationships despite their differences. a lot of nintendo franchises are good examples.
avoid creating significant characters who are utterly irredeemable with harmful ethics. (for me personally, i limit elements such as abuse and discrimination for background conflicts while presenting more interesting, morally gray arguments, where either side is right/flawed) if youāre going to have a villain, either make them team rocket goofy or classic disney fun.
just. try not to have characters + relationships rely on racial tropes. if you overly rely on a tough dark-skinned / dainty light-skinned formula, youāre going to see some racist shipping. mix it up. roundĀ āem out.
same goes for gendered tropes. if a dude is downright violent and irresponsible and a level-headed girl has to put up with his flaws without him facing consequence, thatās a downright unbalanced relationship. and do keep in mind that if two boys utterly despise each other, people will absolutely take that a certain way. again, with #3, try to play off disdain as comedic or with exception rather than constant seething hatred.
obviously these arenāt hard and fast rules, and what/how you create will vary. but itās how i generally approach my work
I am legitimately amazed that tumblrās weird obsession with Never Have Anything Unwholesome writing advice has now reached the point of:
ā Donāt have children in your work,
ā Donāt have families in your work.
ā Donāt have any themes or ideas darker than Nintendo, because thatās romanticising suffering.
ā Donāt have villains unless theyāre in the relatively simplistic, child-friendly mould of Disney or Pokemon, and donāt try to deal with any difficult themes.
ā Donāt have characters dislike each other.
The idea that you should build your work ā because these are all fundamental aspects of a story ā around preventative measures againstĀ āgross shipping,ā and that coincidentally all those measures boil down toĀ āHave as little nuance, conflict, or difficult and unpleasant things as possible,ā is kind of creepy.
i feel like the #1 reason to not rely on racist and sexist tropes in your writing should be that racism and sexism are intrinsically bad things to promote, not primarily⦠that you might accidentally inspire someone else to write bad fan fiction
OP is fucking magical in the worst possible ways, and the replies could be way more vicious and still be completely warranted. I⦠How did Tumblr get to this point?
Oh. See, I thought that was the POINT of the post. That if you really want to avoid badwrong shipping, you have to avoid these themes because they are where badwrong shipping comes from. Sort of illustrating why thatās a silly mindset.
I⦠donāt think so? If they were joking, it didnāt come across well.
EDIT: And nope, blog confirms she was totes serious, and thinks The Loud House was a bad idea from the get-go because it starred children who were family, and weāre never allowed to write kids or families because people might do gross ships. No, really. They actually suggest childrenās shows about childrenĀ and familiesĀ are bad writing and to be avoided because someone might ship the characters together and thatād be gross. (I mean, they do have a point about Chris Savino being a creep, but still.)
OP as someone with chronic pain and disabilities youāre telling me either that my life canāt be romantic or that it can but I shouldnāt write about that or have stories that reflect it. Youāre saying I should pretend that my suffering doesnāt exist, or be totally nonchalant about it and shove it offscreen, just like I generally have to in order to get through a day of work or daily life activities. Youāre saying that people who suffer should not have an outlet in fiction any more than we do in life; that when we express ourselves, our fiction is morally tainted.
That attitude is ableist and wrong.
I miss 2012 Tumblr SJ where at least everyone agreed that representation is good.
Friends, how does one back up their Tumblr? Once upon a time we used Semagic during the great LJ Strikethrough of 2007, but will Semagic work for Tumblr? Is there a newer, better backup device? All suggestions are appreciated.
Also, whereās the newest Xkit? I just spent half an hour trying to find something thatās compatible with the newest version of Firefox and coming up short. @dirtydirtychai, to answer your question, Iām not on Pillowfort yet but Iām on mastodon (and canāt figure it out) and Dreamwidth, same username everywhere.

The first time Stiles kills, itās to protect Lydia from being gutted by the monster of the week. He numbly stares at the body for a long time, until someone guides him away, and then the shaking starts. Itās soon followed by puking his guts out, tears streaming down his face, and Scott has to drive him home.
Stiles has breakdown after breakdown at home, varying between crying, panic attacks, uncontrollable anger and the fear that his dad might arrest him when he finds out.
He spends his days holed up in his room, away from the pack, because he doesnāt want to know how they look at him now. He sees how they look at Peter, and he thinks he couldnāt stand being looked at like that.
On the third day Peter climbs through his window.
Stiles curls up small on his bed, in no condition to be mocked or made fun of because he canāt even stomach one measly murder.
But Peter sits down on the bed next to him, gently resting one hand on top of the sheets Stiles has buried himself under.
And then Peter starts to talk.
He talks about the first time he killed, acted as the left hand for Talia for the very first time. He confines in Stiles that he didnāt sleep for two days, couldnāt eat for even longer, weighed down by the knowledge of what he did.
He tells Stiles about the most inconsequential things that still remind him of the first time he killed, stupid, useless details he never got out of his head, even though he forgot so much during his coma.
And then he tells Stiles that it doesnāt necessarily get better, but that they learn to live with it. They learn to swallow around the lead in their stomachs and to close their eyes at night anyway.
When Stiles still stays silent, still remains unresponsive, Peter leans down and whispers his last secret to Stiles.
That when Stiles finally realizes that he did it to protect someone he loves, and when he accepts that he willl kill again for the people he loves, thatās the moment it stops being a burden and starts being a strenght.
Stiles starts sobbing uncontrollably for a while at that, Peter a steady presence at his side, but afterwards, he feels lighter.
Itās good to know that someone understands.

because apparently this needs to be said AGAIN
in the most general aesthetic terms possible
1600s:Ā most witch-hunts ended in this century. no witches were burned in North America; they were hanged or in one case pressed to death
1700s:Ā the American Revolution. Marie Antoinette. the French Revolution. the crazy King George. most pirate movies
1800-1830:Ā Jane Austen! Pride and Prejudice! those dresses where the waist is right under oneās boobs and men have a crapton of facial hair inside high collars
1830-1900:Ā Victorian. Les Miserables is at the beginning, the Civil War is in the middle, and Dracula is at the end
1900-1920: Edwardian. Titanic, World War I, the Samantha books from American Girl, Art Nouveau
1920s:Ā Great Gatsby. Jazz Age. Flappers and all that. most people get this right but IT IS NOT VICTORIAN. STUFF FROM THIS ERA IS NOT VICTORIAN. DO NOT CALL IT VICTORIAN OR LIST IT ON EBAY AS VICTORIAN. THAT HAPPENS SURPRISINGLY OFTEN GIVEN HOW STAGGERING THE VISUAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ERAS IS. also not 100 years ago yet, glamour.comĀ ā100 years of Xā videos. youāre lazy, glamour.com. youāre lazy and I demand my late Edwardian styles
I just saw people referencing witch burning and Marie Antoinette on a post about something happening in 1878. 1878. when there were like trains and flush toilets and early plastic and stuff. if you guys learn nothing else about history, you should at least have vague mental images for each era
āLes Miserables is at the beginning, the Civil War is in the middle, and Dracula is at the endā sounds like the longest weirdest worst movie Iād pay to see in theatres five times.
