Just watched the last episode of Not So Quiet on the Western Front which was about the battle of Soissons, in which they posit that the reason why Americans say lieutenant by.. pronouncing the letters it's spelled with, is probably because their modern military traditions come from direct contact with the French in WW1, rather than keeping the British pronunciation which is probably just something that morphed slowly over the course of hundreds of years.
