Alright fine I'll watch that Hail Mary movie
really annoying form of tiktok user brain rot is that none of them seem capable of doing basic research for themselves anymore. like i'm on so many different subreddits and constantly people come in typing in a way that clearly marks them as young (as in under 30, not even like teenagers) and stupid, and they'll post a question, and someone will give them an answer, and they'll ask that person to elaborate on something that can be easily accessed through google. like as a hypothetical example, someone will say "what seasoning goes well on chicken breast?" and someone will say "penzeys fox point" and the person will come back and say "what's in it? what does that taste like? how do i use it" well i don't fucking know kayleigh, why not google? why not take your little pointer finger and highlight the words "penzeys fox point" and right-click and choose "search google for 'penzeys fox point'" and the answer will be RIGHT. THERE. but if you don't hold people's hands all the way through every dumb ass question imaginable suddenly YOU'RE the asshole. god i never thought i'd be nostalgic for the era of "let me google that for you" links being the norm but holy shit. NOBODY WANTS TO GET OFF THEIR ASS AND GOOGLE ANYMORE.
people!!! stop saying "oh but google sucks now" please!!! it doesn't suck if you know how to use boolean search terms. did you guys not have to attend a workshop during your first year of college teaching you how to efficiently and accurately look up things on the internet? bc i had to do two of those at the two different colleges i took classes at (and one was a community college in bakersfield california so like, definitely not something that was only offered at high-end private universities) and as a result i can basically find the answer to whatever i'm looking up online with a little digging. it's literally as simple as using the right modifiers...
tiktok is such an awful app, it's almost designed to feed you misinformation and expose you to insane discourse. unlike beloved tumblr, the app that feeds me misinformation and exposes me to insane discourse
No, no, no, you see on tiktok an algorithm feeds you misinformation. On Tumblr I feed myself misinformation from my charcuterie board of hand-selected unhinged mutuals.
None of that mass market junk. Only artisanal, small batch, sustainably cultivated, fair trade horseshit.

I had fun watching Invincible there I said it
rhea seehorn on carol in pluribus being labeled "unlikable" - sxsw panel march 14, 2026
And for me, behaving truthfully and honest in a moment, when people would say, “Wow, she's really not polite when they bring her things,” I'm like, “They killed my wife. My career is gone. I might die alone watching Golden Girls. I'm sorry I wasn't chirpy.”
I heard a commotion in the living room
Administrators in counties affected by Tennessee’s congressional redistricting are working quickly to adjust voter rolls on a tight timeline
Refusing to help your constituents in your rural county seems like disenfranchisement to me. Won’t even answer questions in a phone call!

I hated Gaiman and Depp and Musk before it was cool, just fyi
in 2024 I felt like I was ready to articulate exactly what troubled me about the way that Neil Gaiman cultivated an image and a particular relationship with his fandom and then. well. and the thing is that it would still have troubled me if he hadn’t turned out to be an evil rapist and was just kind of a self-obsessed guy with poor boundaries, but now it’s impossible to talk about that lol.
I am interested in what you have to say. I am interested in your perspective on this matter of reputation, fandom, and social/parasocial relationships.
I have tried but honestly I can’t really rewind my own brain to 2024 before the scandals broke and when it was all fresh in my mind due to the excitement around the Good Omens show. Ultimately it came down to having bad boundaries with his own fandom… the “rockstar” thing was very purposefully cultivated, and he got way too comfortable publicly encouraging a really extreme degree of hero worship in a way that felt deeply irresponsible from a public figure.
Like… his tumblr was quite active, his askbox was open, and he no doubt received dozens to thousands of asks per day. The ones he chose to publish were frequently over-the-top “you’re literally the reason I’m still breathing” “your books are so important to me I’m going to name my ovaries after you” type shit that’s like… personally I think you have to be a little bit of a creep not to find kind of uncomfortable. He would never attempt to graciously de-escalate or redirect that sort of interaction and really normalized it as the way to speak to and think about him while also courting the down-to-Earth and accessible Tumblr uncle thing. Just. Like. He made himself irresistible to a kind of psychologically vulnerable young queer woman hungry for validation in a way I had thought was shameless and irresponsible and retroactively think was very calculated.
It was very calculated, because even before the most horrific allegations broke and went very mainstream there had been a whisper network about NG generally being a creep for years and years as many women recall/had experienced something off about his behavior when meeting him in person. Especially women working in media industries who might run into him would have often heard or been warned he might be a little weird, or worse.
Which makes sense, one of the stories in the Vulture article happened back in 2012, another woman said she was raped back on 2007.
And even if those instances weren't part of the rumors, it was NOT a secret that he slept with many of his young fans and his students. (To my knowledge I think they were all legally adults, but like, he was definitely going after women who were much younger than him, and this wasn't a secret or a whisper. Hell, when he got married to Amanda Palmer they were very forthright about having an open marriage.) Even if the default assumption was that he was just having a lot of consensual sex with willing fans/students, it's still kinda like...well how did anyone know he wasn't leveraging his fame, money, and connections with people who wanted to get into the industry?
(I mean he met Amanda Palmer, age 23, the year he got a divorce from his first wife, when he was what, 39?)
The power imbalance existed and how could anyone know how he navigated that with the women he slept with? So a lot of people probably just either:
a) didn't know that he had been publicly very open about sleeping with a lot of people for a pretty long time, and had a bit of a cultivated pseudo-rockstar/groupies reputation [and his open relationship with palmer had been pretty publically allll over the internet since they confirmed it in 2013. Because some people probably don't know or weren't alive/old enough to remember, Palmer actually announced their engagement on livejournal's community OhNoTheyDidn't!)]
or b) didn't really stop to consider the implications or possibilities of "he frequently sleeps with his fans and students."
(Or c) They dismissed any criticism as prudishness or puritanism.)
So no, at no point was Neil Gaiman trying to avoid hero worship or even avoid flirtation. The rockstar type reputation always included the stereotype of going after fans
His creep persona also extended to his creative work. One of the tropes that comes up over and over again in his writing is the ridiculously hot and cool manic pixie dream girl, old soul, wise child, punk goddess, volatile, dangerous, mysteriously powerful yet emotionally raw. (See also Joss Whedon, not a coincidence.)
Her role is to charm the moody self-insert boy out of nihilistic despair by taking him on the most life-changing first date ever. (Or sometimes a roadtrip.) (Or sometimes she has ripped a hole in the universe and he has to help her close it.)
It's not quite as literal as Manhattan or Crimes and Misdemeanors, but he's obviously positioning himself as the aloof one, the one locked into his own insecurities, too cerebral to even know what desire or interpersonal connection is until some goth teen goddess comes along to take him by the hand.
And even though these stories typically involve a lot of intimacy and overwhelming sensation, sex is strangely absent as a concern - in one story his self-insert and his dream girl du jour joke about it.
