The Song of Achilles book reads like the traditional yaoi written by straight women who are fetishizing and romanticizing gay relationships that they aren’t part of. Patroclus is also stereotypically weaker and more vulnerable while Achilles is stereotypically strong and masculine, and it isn’t queer in any sense other than that on paper they’re both men—everything else is just the toxic heterosexuality of a bodice ripper hiding behind a gay label. The prose is beautiful (if a bit repetitive—how many times do I need to read about Achilles’s foot oil?), but the content is a disappointment. I don’t mind that some people find value in it, but it’s not written for the people that it’s about. Some people say that YA books can be more simple and that this fits the age group, but I think that’s a lame excuse. I’ve read middle grade books with more substance, complexity, and respect for the queer community.

I’m just now assembling a desk I ordered in July. It is nearly October. I literally thought this was a month or two ago bUT IT WAS JULY. MY BRAIN IS MUSH.

I’m so annoyed. I found out that a book I got a while ago—as a wee witch trying to find knowledge everywhere—was written by Edred Thorsson (from a witch store I generally trust), and he’s apparently a massive racist/neonazi named Stephen Flowers. I’m glad I haven’t actually read or used the book yet, but it wasn’t cheap to buy! Are there any books about runes/rune magic that AREN’T written by horrible people? I like runes because they’re cool, not because of some idiotic “racial purity” lunacy. Why are so many racists and/or assholes into Germanic/Norse pagan magic? Apparently even Diana Paxson has issues, although that’s more about abuse rather than racism as far as I know.

Recently I taped one of my selenite wands above my bedroom doorframe because I heard about it on witchstagram/witchtok. I usually don’t follow what they do there but I think it helps. It feels a bit silly and I wish I didn’t have to tape it, but I was worried it would fall. It makes my room feel a bit safer though.

I’m listening to the ACOTAR audiobook for the first time because it was free with my Spotify subscription, and,,, I’m sorry but I just don’t get it. The premise doesn’t make much sense and Feyre is so beyond annoying and immature. And the writing is just… kinda bad? I’ve gotten lost in the descriptions so many times and the amount of flowery metaphorical language is a lot. What does “watery bowels” even mean? Is SJM saying that Feyre was about to shit herself? Why would Tamlin not only spare the human who killed his friend in cold blood but also treat her like a princess in his own court? It 👏 doesn’t 👏 make 👏 sense 👏

Why does Maomao not seem to notice Jinshi’s feelings for her, or recognize their special relationship? Like she definitely enjoys a sort of complicated friendship with him—regardless of Jinshi’s failed seduction or his advances—where she can speak freely with him in ways that she can’t with other superiors. They’re a sort of partnership whether she likes it or not. If she didn’t like him at all, she wouldn’t have accepted his help to buy her way out of the Verdigris house—she is resourceful in difficult circumstances yes, but his advances were very clear leading up to him going out of his way to help her leave the Verdigris house and reinstate her in the palace. She seems to appreciate him, feel repulsion and discomfort, and partner with him. Is she an unreliable narrator?
