I find it interesting that there are so many people that think Qifrey and/or Olruggio are going to die or that even if they don't die they're not going to become canon.
Listen. It makes total thematic sense for them to end up together. Not only would it be weird for them to die considering that a big theme of the series is hope, with Qifrey having to outlive the tree for example.
But also, there are the many parallels they have to other pairings, the silverwood tree and the star that were lovers, Galga and Atwert who are also canon. And most importantly Coco and Agott, because both Coco and Olruggio use magic to help others while Agott and Qifrey use it to help themselves. But what did Agott do? She learned to use magic for Coco and teached her in turn to use it for herself.
It would be so odd for Olruggio to die when he's already trying to sacrifice himself at every turn. And wouldn't it be better thematically if he too learned to have something for himself? Say, being in a relationship with the most important person in his life? Wouldn't it be great if Qifrey got to live the life he wants and learn to be himself around others; use his own magic for his kindest most radiant star?
omg arkco are never beating the orufrey parallels allegations
we know how their reasoning to use magic is a major plotpoint in both of their respective character arcs, right agott draws magic selfishly, for her own gain and self-development, to prove herself meanwhile coco first became a witch to save her mother and she continues, desperately, doing her best to help as many people as possible with her bright and beautiful magic
coco teaches agott to think about others, to create magic for them. agott teaches coco to put herself first sometimes.
but doesn't the same logic apply to orufrey?
qifrey is driven by his desire for revenge, by his desire to find out the truth about himself, what happened with his right eye and how to override the silverwood curse. recklessly, he tried on multiple occasions to escape from the great hall on his own when he was a teenager, all with the goal of regaining his memories. he has an ulterior motive for taking coco in and earlier in the manga we see him forgetting about his responsibilities as a master to chase the brimhats.
olruggio catches him before it's too late, reminding him of what's actually important. as children, he taught him the importance of magic too, he showed him companionship and continues to do so as they care for the girls together. he's teaching him what it is to trust other people, to protect them.
for olruggio, being a great witch equals to being able to help people, to make a difference. his whole magic style revolves around that, his fire keeps people warm and safe. he disregards his own needs (proper sleep, timely meals, etc) in favour of doing his job. he's so selfless that he willingly proposes to have his memories erased to save his best friend. he failed to save people once and he's bend on not letting that happen again.
just like coco, he used to be a child who got too much responsibility to bear, who carried lives of other people on their shoulders. and it's tragic in the way it alters their worldview and the way they interact with their magic
however, i don't think that as of right now we've seen qifrey doing the same thing agott did for coco. he nudges olruggio, helping him appreciate his own effort and take care of himself in small ways: by cooking for him, making him tea so he falls asleep easier. but has it ever been anything major? will olruggio's goals ever be not selfless? when will he get something good for himself and himself only? is it even possible at this point, considering that he's an adult man with settled ideals and beliefs, who's quite content with his life?
with qifrey for a best friend, i don't think so. but maybe that's why the parallel becomes even more beautiful. the small differences make the biggest impact and really show that despite having some apparent and particular similarities in their character traits and arcs, arkco and orufrey are their own people with their own unique stories. which makes the comparisons even more fun!
Olruggio is a fascinating character
This is due to several ressons, but I think a major is how our view of him progresses throughout the story.
When we first meet him, we are lead to believe he is a very strict and grumpy man who happens to have a small soft spot for children. It's the first instance where Coco realises that she is an extremely unique case that is actively breaking the rules ofthe witches. Olruggio, at this moment, is reminding us that we need to be very scared about Coco's secret getting leaked.
Then we see him in more instances. He makes cloth and fabric as well, and grows attached as Coco shows genuine interest in his creations. He admires the passion that she has for it. He becomes more humanised andess of a threat to Coco's secret in our eyes.
This is also slight foreshadowing, seeing the sheer passion that Coco has for magic. I'd like to think of how this is in contrast to Olruggio who clung to magic as a way to save people because it was expected of him.
The more and more we see of him, we get to see how much of a silent helper he is. His actions often speak far louder than his words, and he will provide aid without questions or invitation. He cares for people deeply and even if he scolds them, you can tell it comes from genuine concern.
This all leads you to believe that Olruggio is a man who is deeply empathetic and kindhearted, though he goes about it in a rough manner that isn't verbal, often. Something in direct contrast to the mess that Qifrey is, who seems to remain hungover something from his past that we are initially believe were just regarding his eye and memories.
Then the recent chapters throw that all out the window, building up to the moment in Chapter 93 where we have to recontextualise how we see Olruggio and come to the conclusion that he is in fact worse than Qifrey, and also the main cause of anxiety in him, which is meant to keep the silverwood seed inside of him at bay.
His saviour complex is the result of being a gifted child that had to deal with the pressure of people's expectations that he never asked for, but still took in, because him being empathetic s his fatal flaw.
He is a weird amalgamation of selfish and selfless, because he want to save people so that he can make up for the time that he couldn't. But that guilt weighs him down so heavily because he cares. A consequence of his own nature.
I understand why they prioritized keeping up the tension in the scene instead for a more cinematic experience, but I also really wish the anime had preserved this particular pose from the manga
to show us just how deeply unserious qifrey is about this whole thing hfsjkdhfa. the 'mm-hmm honey' of it all. his utter lack of worry that olruggio is going to actually put his foot down is so fucking funny the more you understand about their relationship

It's so fun being an anime-only fan of witch hat and seeing Literally Every Fanart being orufrey because like given the information in the show so far I wouldn't even consider Olruggio a major character. Tartah has been more important to the plot by an order of magnitude by now. I swear the opening focuses on him so much just to remind watchers that he exists. I know he's important but in the way that an astronomer knows an astronomical entity exists only by the gravitational impact on visible objects. The meteorologists are forecasting a Category 9 Tragic Yaoi Event while I'm having a lovely sunny day on the beach. Fascinating experience, 10 out of 10
There's something so narratively satisfying about Olruggio's best known contraption being the same one that made Coco fall in love with magic.
Because that's what he does. He made the link rings to keep people dry. He makes things that are meant to bring joy and comfort to people. It's his whole thing. He will go well out of his way to ease people's burdens whenever and wherever he can. He's constantly thinking through every contraption he makes in great detail.
And there's something about him seeing on a personal level how someone can connect to what he refers to as 'what he's best known for' and also 'a simple spell'. Going so far as to say it's nothing to be impressed by.
Idk where I was really going with this. But I was rereading that bit in the manga and it just gets me every time.
top 3 books you read in 2025 🎤
wth sure 😭
I will preface this by saying that 2025 really was an awful year in terms of books for me.
Looking at what I've read, the amount of books I gave 1-2 stars to or just dnfed really is long, so I'm throwing in the manga I read too!
hear me out on a twilight musical but every song is my chemical romance
Who would win?
Armand
Jerry
Things are heating up in the iwtv vs tom and jerry fandom

no dude it's so cool how attached you are to that character who is singled out and ostracized due to the external monstrousness that clashes with their internal spark of humanity. and i love how drawn you are to themes of horror and love, nature versus nurture, otherness, isolation, and the abject. i bet you have normal feelings about your own personhood
one thing sram is killing is the music, like all the remakes have tried their best to recreate the og magic but not to the same success (granted they have had less of an ability to use really popular music like norway did). with sram i have yet to really dislike a music choice and just find myself going omg this song slaps.
it's so great and it fits the characters so much? The music in s3 doesn't necessarily feel the same as it did in s1 and s2, because we're seeing lovro's perspective now.
Especially in comparison with some remakes (cough wtfock cough), the soundtrack has a lot of personality and I've been shazaming all of it.
sram so peak I want to dye my hair green again
I'm sure there must be some scene from AA that would be perfect for December 24th, but I don't know which one
'Interview with the Vampire' book review
SPOILERS FOR THE WHOLE BOOK!!
So as a huge fan of the book and not so huge fan of the series, my theory is that you can only really like one of them.
Anne rices vampires are dark more human than most other portrayals, but in the series they're even more people that also drink blood.
Louis and claudias relationship in the books was sickening, and it was meant to be so, it incestous pedophilkic, a bit animalisitic I even dare say.
When it comes to lestat he was abusive, he was not a cartoon villain, but a major prick, and so he was in the series. One of the thing is very much am pissed off at AMC is showing relationship of louis and lestat the way they did, because lestat was abusive. He was violent, he was selfish, he wanted to keep louis to himself for eternity no matter what it took, and that's why he made claudia, which was present in the series but not as much.
Claudia was not a band aid for a shitty marriage she was basically a product of lestat baby trapping louis, because louis told lestat he wanted to leave him, and lestat knew louis would be easy to emotionally blackmail with a child.
And AMC really showed louis and lestat as "well they have their disagreements but they live eachother" which is genuinely harmful.
Yes louis did try to kill lestat, but abusing someone for years, who did nothing wrong to you, and wanting and trying to kill your abuser are very different things.
But claudia was an abominationa and she was meant to be an abomination, lestat was abusive, and he was meant to be abusive, armand was meant to love louis for how human he was, and show him they way to become more of a vampire, and leave him once the human flame burn out, because that was who armand was, he needed mortals to remind him if the beauty of the world so he doesn't step into the fire.
So the book is much more sick and twisted and dark and morally inexcusable because they are vampires. And vampires are sick and twisted, and AMC made it more digestible for wider audiences. So I think basically what I'm trying to say, most plot of iwtv book takes places in louis head, there isn't really much action other than war between his vampire nature and his human self, if you came for a series filled with action its a dead end.
And actually you should be disgusted at times. Because vampires have nothing in common with human morals, and they are very often disgusting.
The point is if you love the books you will at best think the series is okay, if you live the series you will most likely think the book is boring and disgusting, and that's okay, they just made the series into a completely different thing than the books
Okay, so, honestly, I was supposed to post this on a community that's currently reading the book which is why I was so adamant that if you 'weren't going to read the book you should at least watch the show'... I should've worded it better.
But thanks for your input! I do agree that their relationship is abusive and the way it's framed in the show can be really weird.
Also, I've been reading the vampire Lestat and I'm genuinely much more interested in even the more grotesque and off-putting aspects of it. Since I don't have a frame of comparison it's much easier to enjoy it as is.
