Mini SAI guide - "Blending (color blending)", "Dilution (opacity mix)", and "Persistence" settings.
I’ve had a general idea what these things did but wasn’t completely sure what their specific functions were. I decided to sit down and figure it out, and I have thrown together a short reference guide for anyone who is confused about them. I know there are multiple translations of SAI floating around, so if some of these terms don’t sound familiar, just know that I’m talking about the three settings that appear under the texture in the brush tool settings (note that this won’t apply to any tool types except for brushes and watercolor brushes).
I don’t claim to be an expert so if you find I’ve made a mistake, let me know so I can update it, thanks! :3

BLENDING (Color Blending)
This controls how readily the brush will inherit any colors you are painting over with it. For example, a 0% blending setting will pick up no existing colors, treating it as if you were painting on a transparent layer. A 100% blending setting will ONLY pick up existing colors (provided there are any). So at 100%, the color you’re using won’t even show up, unless you move to a transparent area. Blending is not affected by transparent pixels, so if you’re drawing on a blank layer it will have no effect.
So you can see from this example that the color I’m using gets harder to paint as the blending increases and more of the existing green is absorbed, until at 100% it is just completely turning green.

DILUTION (Opacity Mix)
This controls how readily the brush will draw on a blank (transparent) part of the layer. A 0% Dilution will result in the brush painting very easily onto a blank surface, while a brush with 100% dilution will literally not paint on blank parts of the layer at all. Dilution is ONLY affected by transparent pixels. So it won’t do anything if the whole layer is already filled in (even with white). Dilution can be thought of as the inverse of the Blending setting in some ways.
So in this example, you can see that as dilution approaches 100%, the color I’m painting with basically becomes invisible. In fact, if you were to switch to binary color mode and look at this layer, there would literally be nothing there anymore!
Keep this in mind - if you ever can’t paint for some reason, check your dilution setting, it might have gotten accidentally bumped to 100!

PERSISTENCE
This one goes hand-in-hand with blending. Basically, it controls how easily a brush shifts color as you are blending from one color to another. Rather, how long it “persists” if you will. Like blending, Persistence is only really relevant when painting over existing color so it’s mostly unaffected by transparent pixels. Basically, the higher the persistence, the longer it will take for the color to shift as you make a stroke, and subsequently, from which color to which other color it is shifting is dependent on the blending setting.
So for this example I’ve done the same test with three different levels of blending. I turned off all pressure sensitivity (actually I just used my mouse) to emphasize the effects in a controlled environment:
If blending is at 0%, persistence fails to have any real effect. With pressure on, there is only the difference of having to push harder, but the results will be the same as far as I can tell.
At a happy medium of 50%, persistence increase causes the orange that the brush is picking up to last longer as it goes into the green, until it never shifts to blue at all.
At 100% blending, there was never any blue in the first place, because as we already know, full blending causes you to only pick up existing color. So the persistence setting changes only how fast the orange changes to green.
Persistence is dependent upon the blending settings, so having them somewhere in the middle will probably produce the most optimal results.

CONCLUSION
Ultimately how you use these is up to you, and is largely dependent on what kind of brush you’re making and what it will be used for. And most of these settings are meant to be used together in unison, so play around with them a lot!
If you are confused, or not sure what settings you want or what settings you should be using, a safe bet is to put them all at about 50% - that will produce fairly average results that are easy to work with, and it’s easy to remember in case you want to experiment but don’t want to forget your settings in case you decide to switch back.

I (Bryn) will tell you a secret: I trained MMA for seven years, and when I write authentic hand to hand fight scenes, they sound dull too.
The problem with fight scenes in books is that trying to describe each punch and kick and movement (especially if it’s the only thing you’re describing) creates a fight that feels like it’s in slow motion.

Lowering her center of gravity, she held her right hand tight to her face and threw a jab towards his chin. He shifted his weight, ducking under her punch. His hair brushed against her fist, and he stepped forward, launching a shovel hook into her exposed side.
But your brain can only read so fast. In real life that series of events would take an instant, but I needed a full eight seconds to read and comprehend it, which gave it an inherent lethargic feel.
So, we have two primary problems:
How do we describe this fight in a way the reader can understand and keep track of?
How do we maintain a fast paced, interesting fight once we’ve broken down the fight far enough for readers to understand it?

For artists who have problems with perspective (furniture etc.) in indoor scenes like me - there’s an online programm called roomsketcher where you can design a house/roon and snap pictures of it using different perspectives.
It’s got an almost endless range of furniture, doors, windows, stairs etc and is easy to use. In addition to that, you don’t have to install anything and if you create an account (which is free) you can save and return to your houses.

“Through a rapist’s eyes. A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interview…ed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:
1] The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun! , braid, or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.
2] The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who’s clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.
3] They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.
4] The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.
5] Number two is office parking lots/garages.
6] Number three is public restrooms.
7] The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.
8] If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn’t worth it because it will be time-consuming.
9] These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.
10] Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.
POINTS THAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER:
1] If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: can’t believe it is so cold out here, we’re in for a bad winter. Now that you’ve seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.
2] If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.
3] If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.
4] If someone grabs you, you can’t beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh – HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.
5] After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy’s parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you’ll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he’s out of there.
6] When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.
7] Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don’t dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel little silly at the time, but you’d feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.
FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AS WELL ….
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.
2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you…. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping,eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON’T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side,put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS , LEAVE.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
a. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. ( DO THIS TOO BEFORE RIDING A TAXI CAB) .
b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
c. Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked “for help” into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and it’s better safe than sorry.

So what do you think of Bakugou and Midoriya's relationships? You've finally watched/read BnHA and I cant help but wonder about your meta!! (Gotta go away from Kaneki harem mood lmao)
I wanted to write a meta about those two for a while, so thank youfor giving me a push in that direction :D There’s a lot that can besaid about them, so prepare for a lengthy reply.
Disclaimers: this post is meant as an analysis of theirdynamic, not something written to condone Bakugou for his (franklyshitty) behaviour or to make excuses for him. It will touch uponcomplicated feelings and unsolved issues (you all know which ones),so if you’re not comfortable with that kind of topics, I advise youstop reading here.
As a side note, please keep in mind that I will discuss the mangaas a whole, so for those who only follow the anime, BEWARE OF THEMANGA SPOILERS AHEAD.
So, without further ado, let’s dig into it!
1. Necessary introduction: differences in approaches.
First and foremost, something that needs to be addressed is theopposite way in which Midoriya and Bakugou deal with strongemotions.
Midoriya is the type who wears his heart on his sleeve: when he’ssad, he’s not afraid of crying; when he’s happy, he vibrates withhis whole body; when he’s got a problem with someone, he alwaystries to address it and talk it out. Midoriya is not afraid of hisemotions, and instead wears them as a weapon. He’s in control ofthem.
Bakugou, on the other hand, has never known how to deal with them.When Bakugo feels, he always feels strongly (even more so thanMidoriya, perhaps). He doesn’t do anything half-heartedly, not evenemotions.
So he chooses avoidance. He ignores his feelings, shoves them deep into a recess of his mind not to think about them, and tries to move on. But all those pent-up emotions wear him down on the long run, manifesting as frustration the longer he doesn’t do anything about them, and that frustration festers until it manifests as rage.
While Midoriya prefers a more straightforward approach, Bakugou has never been able to follow. So venting became his coping mechanism, because he didn’t know how to properly talk things out with Deku.
2. Before Midoriya acquired a Quirk.
I said that Bakugou doesn’t know how to follow, but it’s actually more complicated than that. In a sense, it’s almost like Bakugou is scared of, intimidated by the ease with which Midoriya seems to be in touch with his emotions.
Quirkless, “useless” Deku is always the first torush in headfirst into trouble to “save” Kacchan.
That, the selfless drive to just dive into danger to help someoneelse, is perhaps the only hero skill that Bakugou lacks.Remember the provisional licence arc and how Bakugou failed the exam?He failed because he rescued no one. I mean, that is not tosay that he doesn’t have it in him to become a great hero. But tohim, heroics is all about raw strength, and how that’s the onlynecessary tool to defeat villains.
So how does this come into play with his relationship withMidoriya? The answer is his inferiority complex.

he knows that if they just subdue these kids without taking these things into consideration, nothing will be accomplished, because he’s been on the opposite end of it before
he understands the frustration and anger of losing to someone who looks down on you better than anyone else here.
AND NOT TO MENTION, HE RECALLS HOW HE REACTED TO LOSING IN THE EXAM. HE REMEMBERS HOW HE CAUSED EVERYONE NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH HIS ANGER, AND ACKNOWLEDGES THAT.
HE’S REMEMBERING PAST LESSONS AND PUTTING THEM INTO ACTION HERE.
HE REMEMBERS HOW HE LOOKED DOWN ON IZUKU FOR ALL THOSE YEARS. HE REMEMBERS HOW HE LOOKED DOWN ON EVERYONE, BELIEVING HIMSELF TO BE THE BEST, SEEING HIMSELF IN THIS BRATTY LITTLE KID AND TRYING TO TEACH HIM THE SAME LESSONS HE LEARNED.
HE REMEMBERS WHAT IT FELT LIKE TO THINK YOU WERE THE BEST AROUND, TO THINK NOTHING OF THOSE AROUND YOU UNTIL THEY’VE BESTED YOU. THE STRUGGLE REALIZING YOU’RE NOT THE BEST, THE LONG ROAD HE WAS ON TO ACCEPT THAT, TO REALIZE THAT HE’S NOT THE BEST AND HE DOES HAVE WEAKNESSES.
TO FINALLY BECOME AWARE OF THOSE WEAKNESSES AFTER YEARS OF SELF-DELUSION AND ACCEPT THEM.
ALSO. BAKUGOU, MR. NEVER-JOINS-IN IS MAKING THIS KID JOIN IN ON THE FUN. BECAUSE HE RECOGNIZES HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR THESE KIDS TO BOND AND FORM RELATIONSHIPS TOGETHER, THAT BEING A LONER THAT LOOKS DOWN ON EVERYONE DOES NO ONE ANY GOOD. ESPECIALLY YOURSELF.
AND NOW…………………………..
HE’S FREELY GIVING ADVICE. TO THIS KID HE’S NEVER MET BEFORE. BECAUSE HE KNOWS IT’S THE RIGHT THING TO DO, TO TEACH THIS KID WHAT HE’S LEARNED, SO HE DOESN’T GO DOWN THE SAME PATH BAKUGOU DID.
in the past, Bakugou gave advice only when prompted…. but here, he’s giving it freely. no one is asking him. no one wants comfort or advice. instead, he’s imparting the lessons he’s learned through the whole series so far onto this kid, because he understands. he’s been there.
he was once that dumbass kid who thought he was the biggest hotshot around, who looked down on everyone, who never saw his own weaknesses, who felt looked down on all his life through misunderstandings.
he knows what’ll happen to this kid if things aren’t stopped; he’ll become just like Bakugou was.
so Bakugou is doing his best to teach this kid otherwise.
