This quote (and the rest of the article) perfectly illustrates the ideology of technological purity underpinning so many established ideas about sound recording, which I try to deconstuct, explain and critique in my PhD-thesis.

It's peak Motörhead: It's 265 tracks played at the same time. It's every track from the 22 studio albums, plus the On Parole collection, and the Beer Drinkers and St. Valentine's Day Massacre EPs. It's pointless, and kinda hypnotic.

The death of a voice as (both literally and artistically) distinctive as that of David Bowie again reminds me of how weird it is that we got so used to something as profoundly uncanny as listening to the voices of the dead.

On Passed and passing time in recorded sound and music
I’m currently finishing writing Chapter 4, called “‘In The Fourier Domain We Are Immortal.’ On the Pastness and Presence of Recorded Sound”
“With regard to the temporality of sound, the ‘noise resonance’ between recorded sound and listeners is shown to be a double-edged sword. The result of a long series of intermittent filters, noise, randomness and sonic transience are a marker for passed time and passing time. Passed time in the sense that they affirm the Endlichkeit of the signal by adding an indexical trace that resonates with both the temporal irreversibility and finitude of all transient phenomena. In that respect, recorded sound and music emphasise how we are always ‘running out of time.’ They mark passing time, on the other hand, in the sense that these traces caused by the materiality of communication media also confirm the constant flow of time through the present and thereby produce the experience of continuously renewed sonic presence. In that respect, recorded sound and music emphasise how we are always ‘in time.’”
