Stephen, traditionally regarded as the Protomartyr, was according to the Acts of the Apostles a deacon in the early church at Jerusalem who aroused the enmity of members of various synagogues by his teachings. Accused of blasphemy, at his trial he made a long speech fiercely denouncing the Jewish authorities who were sitting in judgment on him and was then stoned to death.

First Christian martyr. Deacon. Preacher.
Everything we know about him is only found in the Acts of Apostles. While preaching in the streets, an angry mob who believed his message to be blasphemy dragged him outside the city and stoned him to death. In the crowd, on the side of the mob, was the future Paul the Apostle. Stephen's last words were: "Lord, lay not this sin to their charge" (Acts 8:59a).
