So. I still had the pig litter we built to form the pig palanquin a few months ago. It's just been chilling leaned up against the side of my house since then, doing nothing.
I had some spare time, and some spare spoons, and some spare dollars, today. I took myself down to the hardware store and picked up 4 more 2x4s and a handful of L-brackets, and in combination with some of the scrap wood in my barn from other projects, I turned the pig litter into a bird tower.
The birds were all INCREDIBLY helpful, so eager to climb all over it that they were climbing all over it while we were trying to build it. Literally using a power drill and having to fend off 13 birds who all want to know if anything we're doing might be their business and/or contain treats for them (it did not).
I literally was up on a step ladder, putting the tippy top bar up on top of the tallest 2x4, and I had only just barely placed it there before Bug LAUNCHED herself up to it. The problem was that I only placed it- I hadn't screwed it into the L-brackets yet. So I watched in slow motion as she flew up there, landed on one side, and it tipped over and fell off. I caught the 2x2, and thankfully Bug made it to the ground safely, if embarrassed. I bet it will take a while before she tries to jump up there again.
That's fine! It's here to be explored at their leisure, and used however they please. I built a little treat board into the top of it so I can put scratch grains or whatever up there for them. Earl and Mantis are demonstrating how to use it. And also the size of the thing. It's a little over 8 feet tall, and the bottom brace boards are each 4 feet long.
The middle section the treat board sits on is the original Pig Litter. Including what was used to make that, and the materials I got today, this thing cost ~$35-40 and an hour of time to make, and will last years at least. Worth it!
