i do think one thing the movie flattens over that i really wish was included was how fckin smart rocky is. in the movie he's adorable (his puppeteer did such a good job!) and obviously has the benefit of being able to make xenonite anything, but in the book grace is constantly like 'oh my god, he's the best engineer in the world, he can make literally anything work' and ALSO rocky is able to remember and translate grace's words without a computer, and repeatedly is like 'YES i'm using human units talking to you, we will ALWAYS use earth units, because if i have to wait for your dumb dumb idiot brain to translate eridian units our stars will literally age and die before you finish. idiot.' like in the book they are portrayed more as equals and i think the movie maybe skipped out a little on this

shout out to project hail mary for being a platonic romantic movie. like. Like. every other scene with eva or rocky harks deeply on romantic tropes. rocky and grace pressing their faces together through the xenonite. grace going to find eva on the deck of the ship, being the only one who looked for her. the dance between the blip-a and the hail mary when they first connect tunnels. eva telling grace she believes in him like a prayer. rocky being bossy and impassioned and grace being exasperated but also adoring it. the entire karaoke scene, the cuts to graces smile while she sings. rocky screaming at grace to Get The Fuck Inside during the taumeoba mission. and its a lovestory abt platonic love. at no point does the movie imply either of these relationships should be or are romantic. but they are love stories. Lowers my body into the marsh.

it's truly insane how much more functional society would be and how much happier everyone would be if every job was perpetually 10% overstaffed (and people who weren't needed could chill and rotate in when needed while still getting paid) instead of 10-50% understaffed but that wouldn't be 'efficient' (in the short term, for shareholders) so fuck everyone I guess
