and live with me forever now | flashback

“Oh, my apologies. You’re awake enough to argue with me, who could have guessed that?” Zephyr allowed with a fond smile, experiencing one of those moments where he felt completely and irrationally fond of Remus for no reason at all than because he loved him and Remus charmed him with his very being. It was sappy, yes, but there was a reason that Zephyr wanted to marry the man, after all. (His sass had a large part to do with it, if Zephyr was being honest.)
It wasn’t a traditional proposal. He wasn’t down on one knee and he didn’t have a ring, so Zephyr couldn’t blame Remus at all for being caught off-guard by the unexpected question since chances were that Remus didn’t expect to be asked about marriage on a weekend before he’d even had the chance to drink his tea. For what it was worth, Zephyr fully intended to see about getting rings because he wanted that visible symbol of their commitment and considering he was asking Remus to marry him, he thought it went without saying that he was fine with getting down on both knees for Remus, but he didn’t think traditional had ever really been their thing.
They were going to get married.
It was a thought that somehow made him feel blissfully content and he vaguely recalled a quote he’d read once, possibly from some buddhist monk, that said something about how finding your soulmate feels like coming home and that was a good way to describe the way he felt. Remus was home, he’d known that for a long time, and kissing Remus in that moment provided the strange sensation that everything in life would be okay. They couldn’t prove that, of course, not with a war going on, but they would be okay. They would have their life together and the important things would work out no matter the struggles they faced because they would be together. For as angry and volatile as Zephyr could be, especially when he first showed up in England, he’d found peace in Remus, a tranquility that he thought was a myth and Zephyr couldn’t help but smile against Remus’ lips as he squeezed their joined hands.
“This afternoon sounds good. We can get married and go pick up Katie,” Zephyr murmured, giving Remus another kiss before giving a light laugh. “Should I get up and make you tea while you get dressed, or should I just let you go back to sleep now?” He teased, already knowing that he would pick on Remus for the rest of their lives if he responded to getting married by going back to sleep.
“I love you.” He did, he was stupidly in love and it was a perfect day because they were getting married. “And I can’t wait to brag about my smart, sassy, incredibly sexy husband.”
Usually,if Remus was awake before ten on the weekends it was a sign something was different but this time he was happy to be awake. He didn’t feel the need to bury his head into the soft pillow or pull the covers over his head in protest to whatever Zephyr wanted to do. Instead, he smiled in return at Zephyr. “I’ll always be awake to argue with you. It’s part of my morning routine.” Remus emitted a quiet yawn and his eyes blinked to the side to try and read the time on the clock. It wasn’t too early but it was still the morning which he wasn’t used to seeing on the weekends.
It wasn’t a surprise that Zephyr would propose, but Remus wasn’t expecting it to be any time soon. They had been together for a year and already had more things happen in their lives than any normal relationship. He doubted regular relationships saw as many tense conversations from werewolf pack secrets and holding truths from each other. He doubted any relationship had a surprise daughter come out of it. Remus never saw himself as a father but only because he never saw himself in a relationship to begin with. He was fortunate that the first time he took a big chance on a relationship it was Zephyr and not someone else. Remus didn’t know what his life would be like if he didn’t meet Zephyr or at least in the way they did and when they did. Zephyr came into his life right on time.
This was his life now. Already this year, Remus had a new job that he actually liked and didn’t feel threatened enough to leave. There were people that thought differently but nobody in the castle did. He and Zephyr had moved into a place closer to their jobs which meant it was their first home together. Remus didn’t know if this would be their forever home but he was happy to be there with Zephyr and Katie. And now, this. Remus was giddy with excitement on the inside, awakening his tired cells that would otherwise be dormant.
Remus leaned into the kiss softly, his hands reaching to rest on the side of Zephyr’s face. In only a couple of hours, Zephyr would be his husband. He would be tied together with words and a ring but more than that, they would be together until their dying days. Remus never thought he would have a love like this and it was all happening today. “I’m guessing there’s not a third choice where you just stay here and don’t leave the bed,” Remus proposed with a tired grin that deepened to a feigned pout.
“I love you,” Remus said, his happiness being so transparent on his face as the words slipped from his mouth effortlessly. They carried more weight than any other morning. “I’m sure the only word from that to brag about is husband. I’m sure that our friends will be furious for skipping the engagement part of our lives. There goes a few months where I could have called you my fiance. I prefer saying husband anyway.”
