The thing about Evangelion is that every single character does at least one thing that's pretty fucked up. The hospital scene gets talked about a lot but like, there is not major character in Evangelion that doesn't do something fucked up. It's kind of a major theme of the show, is that human interactions even among loving, well-intentioned people inevitably lead to harm & that that's part of being alive.
Everyone does an awful thing, they are broken people trying to exist. It's hard having so much trauma and pain, your brain gets a little warped and you find yourself doing awful things and after the fact being like "WTF why did I do that?". Not to mention they are living in apocalyptic times with unimaginable enemies mixed in with known enemies (other people).
It's not about morality or who has the high ground. It's about survival. So much of therapy for trauma survivors is learning to own your shit and moving forward. It may mean apologizing, self-reflection, reparations, and much work. It's going, "damn, I did an awful thing while trying to survive," and then you have to decide what next, how do I fix this and myself? One of the most complex parts of moving forward is realizing you are also toxic; you also did terrible things. Sure it is a result of your environment, but that doesn't change the fact that we resort to underhanded tactics and lousy behavior to survive. Everyone in Evangelion does something bad, it's layers of pain and complex reactions and emotions.
But there is also hope. The hope is to change, to move forward, and to learn to love yourself and others. Evangelion is about light in the darkness so that humans may learn from their past sins and choose to better themselves.
@adamworu I feel like this is your jam, anything you wanna add? :)
Yes, exactly!! You've phrased it much more articulately than I did - I was really just trying to make a brief remark - but I think we're definitely on the same page.
You are totally fine 💙
I just really dig your takes and hope I compliment your thoughts!
