âAnd you ? Youâve done your 88 days ?â
âIs it a work which is counting for the 88 days ?â
âHow many days do you still have to do to complete your 88 days ?â
âIn which year are you ?â
Here are the kinds of question that we often have in Australia during a WHV. The WHV (Working Holiday Visa) is a Visa which allows a person to stay at least one year in a country and being allowed to work there. To claim a second year for this Visa in Australia we, which is including most of the backpackers/travelers, have to work 88 days in job which is complying to specific prerequisites. Those requisites have evolved with time. Back to a bit more than 5 years the 88 days must have been achieved exclusively in farm in specific geographical areas. Then the list of eligible jobs and of the geographical areas has been widen. The bushfire and natural disaster areas have been added. Then an international event has happened⊠The pangolin has come (back) into the vocabulary of most of us. The transition from the Covid lockdown to the former way of life has been a revealer. Indeed, the number of backpacker has been drastically reduced and some regions cruelly miss work forces. An Australian (a grey nomad) has said me that it was usual that at its passage in pubs the bosses asked him if he has the necessary certificate and work among their premise. In short it was a (little) mess. To resolve this problem the government has joined the party to refill this jobs with cheap labourers: the backpackers who are willing to work (â I have often eared from Australian that their compatriots are lazy). For that they have included a list of remote and very remote areas in the 88 days. Thus in those areas jobs included in the tourism domain (mostly hospitality) allow us to extend our Visa for a second year. Nowadays I often see job seeker (or employers) asking (or proposing) explicitly some â88 days jobsâ through Facebook (one of the ways to efficiently seek job). In itself the 88 days is not an obligation but most of the met backpackers get into this system.
And me ? Do I have done my 88 days ?
Well yes. At the beginning, having had some feedbacks from some friends I was about to do my days in the former way. This means working in farms. The farm days as some people still name it in Australia (even to speak about the 88 days). The previously mentioned evolutions of the requisites to get a â88 days jobsâ was appearing to me a bit complicated to understand (itâs crazy how a little legislation is repulsing me). I was planning to work on a prawn vessel for 3 months and once the 88 days achieved I would have regarded myself as free of the requisites. This was then my first job that I have been looking for. For that I have gone toward Cairns at the North-East Coast of Australia in the Queensland state. 11 days, thatâs the time that I spent on a vessel with a departure from Bowen.
11 days⊠Which has been a great experience by itself⊠but paid peanuts, moonlighted then without any payslips⊠then without counting in those famous 88 days. In short I have been a little bit scammed (I think). But letâs pass over it, after this 11 days I knew that I did not want to pass 3 months on a vessel (whatever salary it might be). Working all night long and sleeping the day does not really suit me. Few days later I have found a job in tomatoes farm⊠By not really projecting myself in it I refused.
Then I got back on the road to go toward the inside land more in the West. The money melting down as snow under the sun and a little bit bored by the loneliness I have gotten back more seriously into the job seeking. But in what ? During my journey I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the hotel in the bush where accommodation and pub are mixed up. I then had decided to become a bartender to speak with the Australians who are patronised these places. And for that I had to pass a certificate. Indeed, the Australian administration are really into certificates. For instance I have the impression that there are certificates for almost everything: the RSA (Responsible Service for Alcohol) to manipulate alcohol, the RSG (Responsible Service of Gambling) to work in the gambling domain, the White card to work in construction domain, the Food handler certificate to be able to work in kitchen and lot of others that I suppose to do not know the existence. From my student experience to pass my RSA certificate I have learnt that the bartender is legislatively in charge of the patrons. The bartender must pay attention that the patrons should not be âintoxicatedâ. I do not know if in practice this responsibility is really verified by the government. Well, it is with the RSA certificate in my bucket and with a little apprehension to do not understand the patron in front of me that I am looking for a bartender job in the Australian outback. The Australian outback is the really remote areas. A term which I find a bit blurry despite itself. I have the impression that the idea of the outback from one is not the one of his neighbour. It is a bit like the South of France seen by its inhabitants. Some say that the South is starting from Lyon, others will assert that it is starting from Valence and others see the South border lower. Well, with the postal code I can at least use different tools to assert that the location is part of the remote and very remote areas which can complete the 88 days. By using Google Map I have found my first (authentic) job in the only hotel of a small town called Marree. I am employed as housekeeper. On the map we could see a great lake called Lake Eyre. I then said myself that it is an green area covered by trees. This kind of image that I have of a lake. Wrong thought⊠I fell into an arid desert. Next time I might have to pay attention on the colour of the area on the map!
With this first experience I can certify the efficiency of the government program to attract the backpackers in these areas. Indeed, over around 20 employees there must have been more than 70% of backpackers in the team. Well, with a little passage to the kitchen, I have spent 2 months in Marree. At my departure from this town toward more populated areas I have made a stopover to a restaurant in a small town. The waitress, a French backpacker, has told me that she worked here to try the outback⊠I did not dare to say to her⊠but for me this place was all but not an outback ^^".
2 months work in the outback⊠It does not make 88 days. I need another job. Before my departure from Marree I got back in touch with an employer who had accepted me right after I started my job as housekeeper. And here I am, one month ago I have been committed (orally) for 6 months for a job which got my curiosity: Oyster farming. It is 600km far from Marree⊠Then from an Australian point of view: quiet close. Because of an illness in the water I have started in Cowell with in mind to finish my job at Streaky bay. Here also we have more than 70% of backpackers in the team. And something new to me according to Marree among the backpackers we have almost 70% of French, a nationality which is present a bit everywhere in Australia. Wherever I go in the country-continent I can easily find one of my fellows.

88 days⊠Itâs for the second year. It is existing then the 179 days to be able to claim a third year. These 6 months has to be achieved during the second year. This is what I believe. The rumours say that it can be done during the first year in addition to the 88 days⊠itâs a bit like the outback, the law (or the enforcement of it) is a little bit blur. Otherwise you have to know, that even if itâs pretty much the same, rules change more or less according the nationality⊠Each passport has its power. To provide one of the biggest difference, the British folks do not need to fill any of these conditions to get their second and third year. And there are many other rules that I do not explain here to avoid you (and me) from getting lost.
To summarise, I have spent more than the half of my time spent in Australia to work. It might seem a bit surprising. Thatâs my choice. Moreover over my first 4 months in Australia I have more in my mind the spent time in Marree than the other half which was the beginning of my trip. I have this sincere feeling to have more memories⊠more stuffs to speak about. And I (fortunately) do not speak about the techniques to fold a bed, to do a salad mix or to sort an oyster. I wonât get further in the details although for my personal pleasure to remind me the folks with who I lived and in default of posting their pictures I can at least name them: Cliff (the crook captain), Greg (the other ficher man [we were 3 on the boats]), Antony (a backpacker manager at Mt Isa), Sara, (Lieutnant ?) Dan, Joseph, Alexa, Scott, Suzy, Reece, Gallen, Simon, HĂ©lĂšne, Kim, Gregory, Sebas, Sara (yeah yeah, a second one with the same spelling), Zoe (with who I have finished the video game Split Fiction), Paege (The employee with a passage more than expeditious), Aaron, Molly, Carmin (the discrete colleague in the kitchen who we knew her presence on the work day itself), Stacee, Kay, Bonny, Gordon, Julien, Benji (or Bunji⊠from its real name Francis), Fabian (alias Fab alias fabulous, the man who wriggles his legs as no one), Fayline, Jacquy, Brenton, the pilots of Marree from who the names have almost always been misterious, Daniela, Davide, Marcello, Kez, Naim, Jake, Jono, Daniel, Hugo, Pierre (or P-E)⊠and lot of other names that are fleeing from me today (and maybe foreverâŠ). And well by naming these persons why not quoting some expressions: âPrawn !â (Expression from Cliff when I unwillingly throw away prawn in the ocean while sorting), âMariage lineâ, âIt has to be a tightâ (for the beds when housekeeping), âChalouper chalouper !â, âJust three of usâŠâ, âOh shit !â, âBullbar plateâ, â(S)Heâs gooooooone !â, âOne oyster, one dollarâ, âYeah yeeeaaah !ââŠ
PS: Today I think I will stay in Cowell and not going to Streaky bay. But at the moment of writing the very first version of the text I though by going there. Then I let it as it is as a souvenir.
First version achieved on December the 12th 2025
