as i said in my last translation post, i just started playing fe10, so i'm cleaning up my leftover fe9 translations! as always, i’m using pegasusknight as my source for the original japanese scripts and fireemblemwiki as my source for proper nouns, images, and other info. ‼️ may contain spoilers ‼️ ネタバレ注意 ‼️

translation notes & questions
of course, reyson is such a star in this conversation--he is so precise and does not shy from saying nasty truths (reminds you of someone else ike likes...), although in fact he doesn't shy from saying positive things, either, where relevant. but i absolutely adore ike here, ike who obviously can be impetuous and stupid but is actually a really good listener. i adore these two!!!
13 「頼む」 - as i've said elsewhere, reyson talks like a prince: he's precise, direct, and manages a beautiful holier-than-thou tone in weaker or stronger doses depending (more or less) on how pissed off he is. in this convo we get a perfect blend of reyson the prince and reyson the [rescuee], and this line, "please," shows it so well. this word means i beg of you and can be twisted in a thousand more formal, more deferent turns of phrase, but here reyson essentially shoots it point-blank at ike like a bullet. reyson makes it very hard for anyone to back down from him. (in other words, he can be somewhat reckless...)
26 「生死の境をさまよった」 - reyson literally says he "wandered the border of life and death" for ten days. this is cool as fuck, but not very snappy, especially considering the tone (and syntax) of the convo thus far.
30 「捨て身な行為だな」 - i love this line. i love this line. ike is using such charged language (捨て身 literally means throwing one's body away, as in, an action tantamount to suicide), but he's using it to make an observation. he isn't judging or moralizing or even sympathizing, he's just noticing. the beautiful だな at the end of this awful sentence is like a bandaid on a wound. ike knows he isn't saying anything reyson doesn't already know himself. the point is not actually suicide or recklessness, it's recognition of the crime against serenes and what that did to him. okay, damn, i'm wearing a hole in this soapbox!! jeez!!
35 「ニンゲンたちに復讐」 - in the japanese, reyson explicitly says he wanted to "get revenge on humans," but i kept it as an implication in the english.
37 「叶わなかった」 - reyson literally says his "prayer didn't come true," where the syntax doesn't include the goddess. i felt this line would be more painful in english if i gave the goddess an active role, so i changed it to "she didn't listen."
43-44 「直接...すまんだろう」 - ike walks this thought through very thoroughly in the japanese. he literally says, "you probably wouldn't get away with doing something that would directly hurt an opponent." the implication of "get away with" is that reyson would suffer some outsized consequence, like death.
47 「命と引き換えに」 - in the japanese, reyson is explicit that he wouldn't have cared even if he had to "exchange [his] life" to get revenge. as is typical of me, i left this as an implication in the english.
50 「生きていたからこそ」 - reyson literally says he "was able to see leanne again precisely because" he survived his despair. obviously this is a nice sentiment, but as always, i prefer something snappier, so i simplified the syntax heavily while trying to keep the link between his survival and leanne's with "came back to me."
52 「思った以上に男らしい」 - ike literally says reyson is "more man-like" than he thought, probably since he just expressed wanting to care for his sister/a younger female person and that is seen as a very noble, manly trait in this game (even naesala gets a piece of it eventually!). but i think ike's point here is that reyson is actually much more like ike than ike thought (ike who this whole game is protecting mist when they have no other family left, etc...). so i decided to make that part explicit, and the implicit part becomes that ike (or fe9) considers protecting your lessers a manly act. (this also provides the groundwork for the joke in ll. 53-54!)
53 「精神力だけなら」 - reyson literally says, "if you're just referring to my force of willpower [then yes, i am manly in that way]." (this is an awesome function of the particle なら, which implies a corollary of if X then Y, and if not X, then Y is moot.) because this is funny in japanese, i tried turning it into a proper joke in english! in line 52 in the english, i have ike realizing that he and reyson are rather alike, so naturally reyson should respond to this particular claim, and because reyson is very kiss-the-royal-hand, he should probably be mean about it. so i turned "force of willpower" (basically neutral) into "mule-headed fool" (definitely an insult). what turns this into a joke (and stops it from being genuinely unkind, in my opinion) is that reyson is simultaneously calling ike a stubborn ass and recognizing ike's point that the two of them are similar. in other words, he is acknowledging that he, too, is a stubborn ass. the joke is completed in the next line...!
54 「他にひけはとらないつもりだ」 - as a follow-up to the previous line, reyson literally says, "i don't intend to be outdone by you in any other regard [than force of willpower]." this is a very common sentiment in anime ("i won't lose!!" "don't underestimate me!!" etc.), but i personally feel it sounds silly in english, so i tend to work around it. the base sentiment behind these kinds of lines is usually i'm just as good as you are, which we can do a lot with. so! to complete the joke that started in line 53, i took this feeling of you're not better than me and attached it to the "mule-headed fool" bit, giving us "you can keep it to yourself." in sum, this joke, the icing on the ice-cool reyson cake, means something along the lines of sure, we're both stubborn asses, but i'm still a prince so watch your tone in both japanese and english. (i hope!!!)
i'll be honest, i started translating this support so long ago i don't think i've even read the b- and a-supports since then, so no promises on when those'll get translated. but boy do i love this one!! what a sledgehammer of a c-support!!

translation notes & questions
this was actually pretty tough to translate, mostly because both of them are speaking in big paragraphs. because of structural differences between english and japanese, big paragraphs need many more intermediary steps (in my experience) before you (i) can translate them smoothly. but once i got going, i found lots of places to be creative!!
29-30 「傭兵団に...するうちに」 - oscar literally says, since joining the mercenary band, he has "put the sadness of the people at the forefront of [his] vision". my translation puts him into the role of recipient (i.e., of the sadness), but in the original he's looking right at the sadness on purpose.
32 「誰にも...いる」 - oscar literally says, "there are many people who die without anyone knowing about it."
35 「野の人間」 - oscar refers to the mercenary band here as "wild humans." metaphorically, this means humans with no allegiance, but the use of 野 does in fact bring to mind the image of wilderness or even wild animals. but at least in english, you have to be very sensitive when applying the word "wild" to people, so i went with the metaphorical meaning and translated this as "exiles".
37 「傭兵団という私の家族」 - oscar literally says he wants to protect "the mercenary band who are my family", as in, he considers all the mercenaries his family. this is clunky in english, and i liked creating ambiguity between his actual family who are in the mercenaries vs. the mercenaries as a whole.
41-42 「なぜだ...気がする」 - i embellished here big-time. kieran literally says, "why...? i feel like i've lost to you yet again!" in my opinion, he didn't really need to say this again, so i made it into a contrast between oscar being angelic (l. 40 "halo", or literally "bright" in the japanese) and kieran feeling inferior or laughable.
46 「お互いがんばろう」 - oscar literally says, "let's try our hardest together", but with the sense of mutually trying their best, as if they're doing it equally to one another or even for one another.
48 「目指す...はずだ」 - oscar literally says, "the ideals we're aiming for aren't different."
55 「オレの活躍が伝わるようにな」 - kieran literally says he will accomplish his deeds "in such a way that they will be conveyed" to oscar. the sense of "conveyed" here is natural conveyance, like word of mouth or passing into legend.
56 「君ならきっとできる」 - oscar literally says, "you of all people will surely be able to do that" (in reference to l. 55).
57-58 「この大陸...祈ってるよ」 - this line is actually a call-and-response to kieran's line 52, where he references the "continent." oscar literally says, "somewhere on this continent, i'll be praying for your luck in battle," the implication being, he'll be praying that kieran both gets glory and does not die. i liked this second part a lot, since oscar is usually quite calm and we don't get the sense that he worries about anything. so i translated these lines very loosely to show that no matter what, oscar still wants to know kieran is safe. (very much brings back the "protecting family" idea from l. 37, where we can tell he isn't just referring to his brothers!)
whew--i'm happy i finally finished this! and i'm particularly proud of the lines where i went off-script rather a lot (ll. 31-32, 40-42, and 56-58). it's great to have the official NOA translation, which is pretty to the letter, so i can get silly with it!! :)
anyways, thanks again to umuulan-na for (loosely) requesting this support line. i actually just started playing fe10, so get ready for more soon...!!

i was reading monster recently (perfect edition vol. 6 pictured above) when i came across this instance of an onomatopoeia that caught my eye. here's how we can probably interpret these two panels:
upper middle: カタカタ = shaking, trembling upper left: ガタガタ ガタガタ = trembling harder, shuddering
there are two basic differences here:
amount of onomatopoeia: four moras (カタカタ) vs. eight moras (ガタガタ ガタガタ)
quality of consonant: カ vs. ガ
now if you know me, you know i'm going somewhere with this vague "quality" term, but let's hold off on that for just a second to state the obvious: more is more!
more is more
well, duh, right? but it's still worth saying! compare these two sentences:
どんどん暖かくなっていく。 = it's getting warmer.
どんどんどんどん暖かくなっていく。 = it's getting warmer and warmer.
the difference carries over into english pretty nicely. it's a little redundant, or even childish-sounding, but it makes sense! so we can apply the same principle to the monster panel above:
カタカタ = shaking
カタカタカタカタ = shaking and shaking
so, with more of the onomatopoeia, we get more of the action, because it's lasting longer or getting stronger or for whatever other reason. but what about the other change in the onomatopoeia...?
カ vs. ガ
let's take a dip into romaji here: these two kana are ka and ga. thinking about it phonologically, they're a consonant+vowel group. let's look at the consonants:
/k/ = voiceless velar plosive
/g/ = voiced velar plosive
"velar plosive" sounds complicated, but it's just a scientific description of where the consonant is made (the velum = back of mouth) and how the consonant is made (by "exploding" = closing something, in this case your tongue, and then releasing it). what's important here is the voiceless and voiced distinction!
if you've never encountered this distinction before, here's your fun first-timer's experiment: touch your throat and say ssssssss. now do zzzzzzz. feel the difference? your vocal cords (yes, it's spelled cords) vibrate when you do zzzzzzz, but not ssssssss. that's the voicing distinction! sounds that vibrate (like /z/ and /g/) are voiced. sounds that don't (like /s/ and /k/) are voiceless.
ok, sure, but what of this voiced/voiceless distinction? well...you guys remember kiki and bouba? part of the difference between them is voicing: /k/ is voiceless and /b/ is voiced. as it turns out, the physical impression created by voicing is theorized to be universal in humans. in other words, voiced sounds "look" different than voiceless sounds! hence why kiki (voiceless /k/) is spiky and bouba (voiced /b/) is round.*
so what other impressions can voicing make? in general, voiceless sounds give a softer, lighter impression, while voiced sounds give a harder, heavier impression. this can even extend metaphorically to voiceless sounds giving a "good" impression and voiced sounds giving a "bad" impression. let's compare some pairs of onomatopoeiae with /k/ and /g/:
キラキラ /kirakira/ = glittering
ギラギラ /giragira/ = glaring
here's a famous one! the onomatopoeia /kirakira/ (with voiceless /k/) gives the impression of something light and pretty, while /giragira/ (with voiced /g/) gives the impression of something so bright it hurts to look at. we can even do a similar comparison in english: the double /t/ in glittering is voiceless, while the /r/ in glaring is voiced!
here's one that gives a physical impression instead of a visual impression:
コンコン /konkon/ = knocking
ゴンゴン /gongon/ = banging
our voiceless option, /konkon/, sounds like a polite knock on someone's office door. the voiced option, /gongon/, sounds like rapping a metal knocker as hard as you can (or like, a siege engine, lol). again, we can observe a similar pattern in english, with banging containing way more voiced sounds--in fact, in my english, that word is entirely voiced! (put your hand on your throat and test it!)
we can even have sensations playing out this way:
キンキン /kinkin/ = pulsing
ギンギン /gingin/ = throbbing
honestly, i would say neither pulsing nor throbbing is a particularly good sensation, but i definitely know throbbing is worse (or at least stronger...). again, for the english, the /p/ and /s/ in pulsing (the マシな option) are voiceless, while the double /b/ in throbbing is voiced.
last of all, let's return to the example from our monster panel above:
カタカタ /katakata/ = shaking
ガタガタ /gatagata/ = shuddering
i'm sure it's now blindingly obvious what's going on here, but let's spell it out for thoroughness's sake: if you're shaking or trembling a bit, that's カタカタ, but if it gets worse and bigger and harder to control, that's ガタガタガタガタ! basically, as poor detective suk gets more and more scared, his shakes get worse and worse. 可哀想にね。suk刑事、頑張れよ...!!
*there are other reasons for this specific case, too, so look it up if you're interested!
there's only so many sounds out there!
so, what did we learn? well, possibly we learned some useful new onomatopoeia, especially ones that you're likely to see in manga. but also, we learned how, on a very high level, sounds sound the same to everyone who can hear them. the human vocal organs are restricted in size, shape, and acoustic power, so more or less everyone is making the same sounds as each other (compared to, for example, birds or whales or stars...). that means everyone's brain computes sound similarly, too, and we end up with strong, shared impressions like "/g/ is hard and heavy" or "/b/ is round and buoyant." this is phonology, but it's also phonetics and acoustics, and it's also even neuroscience and cognitive science!
of course, if we want to look at the matter through another lens--especially a cross-linguistic lens--sounds don't actually sound to same to anyone, but that's a story for another time. as always, feel free to send a message with any questions or comments :) みんなで言語学を楽しんでよう!
