translation notes & questions

let me start by saying, i love the NOA translation of this scene (link below the cut!). and because i love that one, which is really quite lighthearted and sweet, i wanted to make mine different in tone, so mine is more serious, even nearing an argument at times.

3 「ここです」 - oh, my--reyson keigo?! what next! for those not in the know, reyson uses casual (though still princely) language with almost everyone, all the time--ike, naesala, everyone. even when he uses keigo elsewhere, it's usually with casual morphology. as far as i know, the only person he breaks out the full nine yards for--as in, sonkeigo, kenjogo, and polite morphology--is tibarn, whose guest he was in phoenicis for many years. 🤷🏻‍♀️ which could mean nothing!

5 「宝探しをしていました」 - this line is basically dry in the japanese, but the NOA localizers had the amazing idea to make it an exclamation ("i'm hunting for treasure!"), which makes it sound extremely innocent and sweet. i thought about borrowing the exclamation point for my translation, but since it really sets the tone, and i wanted a more serious tone, i decided to leave it to the realm of NOA canon.

19-20 「よく眠っておられたので」 「おまえが抜け出した」 - now, something i didn't try to change is the implication that reyson and tibarn are literally, physically sleeping together. reyson notes that tibarn was "sleeping well" using the ので particle, implying factual information or circumstances--in other words, reyson is describing something he saw and knows to be true. and tibarn says he missed reyson "sneaking out," the implication being reyson had to walk by or over him or possibly even extract himself from whatever sleeping arrangement they have. you could explain this away if you wanted to, but who wants to?! there are much more fun things to take away from these lines. (also, i just want to emphasize again how formal reyson is being here: おられた is a lexical AND morphological honorific, and ので is both polite and uncontracted. tibarn is king, sure, but more than that, he's very much the herons' benefactor! reyson sounds positively deferent!)

25 「たまにはいいじゃないですか」 - as i've said, i translated this scene with a fairly unforgiving hand, but this is probably the line where i did reyson dirtiest. he literally says, "isn't it good sometimes [to sleep heavily]?" where the implication is that he's pleased tibarn was able to rest so well for the first time in forever. it's sweet! but i went ahead and turned this into a point-blank accusation: "why must you be constantly vigilant?" in my translation, reyson makes it sound like he thinks tibarn is at fault for or at least complicit in his own restlessness. this sort of remark is not at all unheard of from reyson (he is fond of pointing them at naesala!), but he's usually much gentler with tibarn in particular.

33 「はい」 - another moment of genius on the NOA localizers' part was translating this as "excellent" (it fits in context with their translation). while はい basically means "yes" or "understood," it really, really relies on context to be interpreted, much more than a textbook ever tells you. whenever i see はい, i take it as free rein to insert whatever i think is most fitting. and so once again, i've decided to treat reyson as uncharitably as possible: instead of the encouragement he gives in the NOA version, i've made him express doubt in tibarn yet again with "if you say so." the official version has him pleased with tibarn, even verging on *ahem* flirtatious, but i've gone and given him his old, snotty attitude. (by the way, i want to emphasize yet again--はい is keigo! can you imagine reyson saying はい to literally anyone else??)

all in all, it was really fun to translate this scene this way--it took a fair amount of interpretation and creativity, which is exactly why i do these. but on the other hand, i really feel it doesn't match the spirit of the original script, even though the contents are essentially identical. what's missing from this translation is exactly what the NOA version does so well: we get to see reyson behaving completely unexpectedly, away from everyone but tibarn, relaxed and happy and apparently digging in the dirt for fun. obviously, it partly goes to show how the events of the game are affecting everyone's mental states, but it's also just plain endearing. reyson really is nothing like the other herons!

there were, of course, a TON of fun, sneaky little shenanigans in parts 2 and 3 of fe10--in fact there were so many i couldn't possibly catch them all. so i decided to pick just two that i thought really exemplified the tellius localizers' agenda, inasfar as i've understood it. every change they make seems to be toward the goal of more is more: make everyone more expressive! make the implications more explicit! make the romance more romantic! frankly, i adore it, though of course it's not the only way to localize a text. i picked two examples here, a serious one and a funny one, so let's get into it!

part 2 chapter 4: mid-battle

i picked this example as a serious example, because of how capital-R Romantic it is. (and maybe even lowercase-r! look at that elincia line!) there are no huge differences in content here, but i wanted to use this exerpt to show how free the tellius localizers felt they were to extrapolate. the meaning of the japanese and the english here is fundamentally the same--but see how the english runs off with the show!! alright i'll be honest with you guys, i'm a little drunk writing this. but i'm serious. this is localization by someone who likes localizing, and writing, and historical fiction, and fire emblem. i'm getting emo trying to analyze it. you see it, right?? do you see it?????

part 3 chapter 2: aimee

Ike: Man, you go right for the neck, don’t you? All right, Soren. She’s all yours. Soren: Yes, sir. What I do now, I do for the good of the company. Aimee: No, Ike! Don’t go! Don’t do this to me!

first of all, i feel like i've said this a thousand times, but i just need to say it again: aimee's original (japanese) name is larabel. how nuts is that?! my guess is they changed it to fit the joke of her character, as in, aimée ("beloved" in french). just my guess though!

anyways, this scene--comic relief, of course, with some classic "the woman doesn't get it" misogyny involved, but in my opinion the english plays it up so much it almost transcends joke and ends up in stageplay. it's very funny. for ike's lines, the addition of "you go right for the neck" shows appreciation for aimee's boldness, and the "she's all yours" is a hilarious translation of 任せた ("i'll leave it to you").

for soren's lines, the translation of はい ("yes/understood") as "yes, sir" is both accurate to the register (since はい is considered 敬語/respectful language) and a beautiful little detail to insert into soren's speech. we know from fe9 that soren almost exclusively refers to ike by name (without honorific) or with あなた ("you," verging on "dear" at times), so to slot in this cheeky little "sir" is both a perfect show of humor and a sideways look at their romance. his fully invented second sentence ("for the good of the company") is amazing added flavor. given the localizers' agenda of more is more, it makes sense they would add this line to emphasize that soren's "flirting" with aimee is utterly transactional. (plus, the localizers seem to be rooting for ike and soren throughout these games...and also reyson and tibarn but that's another story.....)

and lastly, aimee's added line: "don't do this to me!" this heightens the stageplay-like aspect, where the villain (or comic relief) gets dragged offstage to be tortured for the good of the many. it's so dramatic it almost sounds like she knows exactly what's going on, again making it feel like play-acting. i find this to be a very deft way of handling slightly icky source material. (have you guys ever heard how people say fe14 reads like an opera? this is exactly that, in my opinion.)

fe10 and saturation

okay, i'll get off the soapbox, i promise, but just one more thing: i've started thinking of this kind of localization as a type of saturation (or oversaturation if that's where you stand). as a text, fe10 is so so full, full of plot points and a million characters and named locations and incredibly minute mechanics and intersecting relationships, i mean for god's sake the game has a glossary it lets you access every time you return to base. to me, it feels like the localizers really understood their task was to saturate the translation with all of these details, which is why they took their own stances on the game's issues and invented so many new lines. (and of course, there's the classic observation that english text tends to be "richer" than japanese text, due to high context/low context norms.) i bet it felt totally impossible to translate this game in a neutral way, and wouldn't that have been way less fun, too? isn't is so rewarding to pay attention to something and notice the creators tipping their hat back at you?

as i learned with fe9, the localization team for tellius had a TON of their own ideas and put them to amazing use in these scripts. so i'm recording the ones i enjoyed! and there are UNTOLD micaiah and sothe shenanigans in part 1, i definitely didn't catch them all. let's get into it!!

chapter 4 clear: yune

1 [サザ] まったく、世話のやける鳥だな。 2 [ミカヤ] …あ、…何か…聞こえる…… 1 [sothe] good grief, that bird is a handful. 2 [micaiah] ...oh, i hear something...

serenesforest:

Sothe: “You and that bird. It’s…a little strange.” Micaiah: “You’re just jealous. Wait, I hear something.”

a LOT of the additions in part 1 have to do with micaiah and sothe's relationship. there a lot of little comments added like these, where one or both of them express either their attachment for the other or the other's attachment for them. most of these additions are humorous or even teasing in tone, which i think is such a lovely, sympathetic detail!

in this case, it's interesting that the localizers both changed the focus and tenor of sothe's comment ("that bird" > "you and that bird" + "handful" > "a little strange") AND added micaiah's retort to match. i absolutely love this little interaction.

chapter 4 clear: nailah and rafiel

Rafiel: “Your news brings such joy! Father…Reyson…Leanne… My beloved family… My thanks to thee, O goddess… Ah…” Nailah: “Rafiel… You talk too much. Control yourself. You, beorc… What’s the best route to Gallia?”

i'm obsessed with rafi and nailah. we've got two concurrent changes here: the change to nailah's dialogue and the removal of rafiel's response. i think it's really interesting that the localizers changed the substance of lines 6-7 here without changing the tone or underlying meaning. "don't cry so excessively" becomes "you talk too much," where only the action has changed (cry > talk). the essence of the remark is exactly the same: stop making so much noise. and then "it's bad for your health" becomes "control yourself," where again, the essential meaning is the same: don't let your body act without you. nailah clearly values strong presence of self, so in my opinion, these remarks are meant to be read as chastising but not demeaning. she is caring for rafiel in the best way she knows how, which is, trying to help him be "stronger" (more like her!). she isn't unsympathetic, she's just assertive. removing rafiel's response also conveys that same feeling, that she sort of talks right past it because we need to get down to business.

chapter 4 clear: ike

Micaiah: “Right. Lord Ike, hero of the Crimean Liberation, leader of the Greil Mercenaries, and father of Sothe’s children…”

i CACKLED when i first saw this. obviously this comment is completely invented (i don't think this joke exists in japanese), and it goes so well with the localizers' micaiah, who does not check herself with sothe the way she does with everyone else. she's very smart, very polite, very serious--and also very quick on the draw!!

chapter 5 base

pegasusknight + literal translation

1 [ニケ] …そうか、また 2 砂漠へ向かうのだな？ 3 [ミカヤ] はい。 4 [ラフィエル] ……女王よ… 5 [ニケ] うむ、わかっている。 1 [nailah] ...that's right, you're going back 2 to the desert, aren't you? 3 [micaiah] yes. 4 [rafiel] ……my queen... 5 [nailah] yes, i know.

serenesforest:

Nailah: So, you’re returning to the desert? Micaiah: Yes, we must go back. Rafiel: My dear… Nailah: Yes, Rafiel, I know.

gah i love this one!! in the japanese, it's clear that rafiel and nailah are very close because rafiel is very honest with her and isn't afraid to speak directly to her or speak his mind--BUT he still uses formal, respectful, and deferential language, because she is the queen. her being the queen is a totally separate issue to his love for her. because this is very hard to replicate in english (no respectful or deferential registers!), the localizers decided to change rafi's diction ever so slightly while still keeping his polite, soft demeanor. so we get things like this wonderful, subtle "my dear" in place of "my queen" (or "your majesty," or similar). i especially love this considering he's the heron most forthcoming with their emotions! (can you imagine reyson calling anyone "my dear"???)

chapter 6 base

Sothe: You didn’t want me to take the money, did you? Micaiah: It’s not that. It’s just… Oh, never mind. Sothe: Oh, come on. What did I do this time? You’re not going to say? Great. In that case, let’s get out of here and go find the others.

translated literally, this is an absolute nothing of a conversation (two whole lines of silence!), and the localizers clearly knew it, because they gave both of them more to say. micaiah has a much clearer dismissal of sothe's concern, and sothe has this wonderful, petulant, entirely invented final line. i especially love the cheeky "you're not going to say?", which is both a comment on micaiah keeping secrets and on the localizers declining to judge her for it! chef kiss!

chapter 7 clear

pegasusknight + literal translation:

1 [イズカ] それでどうなのだ？ 2 彼らに参加の意志はあるのか！？ 3 [サザ] それは……本人たちに 4 聞いてみないことにはわからない。 5 首領格のトパックは気のいい奴だから… 6 こちらがそう望めば 7 手を貸してくれるだろうが。 1 [izuka] so, what will it be? 2 do they have what it takes to fight?! 3,4 [sothe] uh...we won't know unless you ask them. 5 but their leader, tormod, is a good guy, so 6 if we want them to help, 7 they probably will.

Izuka: “Any such backlash can be extinguished with proper punishment. But laguz… They’re powerful! (And expendable…) Just what we need. By all means, invite them to join!” Sothe: “They’re good friends. I’m sure they’ll agree to help if I ask (you mumbling creep).”

if you know japanese, i actually recommend you go and read this entire scene in japanese and then in english, because it's totally rearranged! we could talk for an hour about what's going on in this localization, but i especially wanted to point out these very funny asides by izuka and sothe. it's another instance of the localizers essentially waving their hands in your face and saying "hi!!! isn't this fun!!!" by making izuka's ulterior motives explicit (as far as dramatic irony goes), they open up the avenue for sothe's responding joke. sothe just thinks he's joking about how izuka is weird and untrustworthy, but WE (localizers and audience) know he's inadvertently referencing the plot of both games. these localizations really show you how translator omniscience can be put to so many different uses!
