Give me a king / princess . . . He is a king of a distant land . . . She is the illegitimate princess of a rival kingdom. After her brother attacks his kingdom and steals riches— the king comes to take his revenge. He plans on killing everyone for her brother’s crimes. To save their lives her step mother offers the princess to the king as his bride. Not bothering to tell the king that the illegitimate princess was already arranged to be married to a lord. Throw in some sexual tension — maybe some smut . . .

As she neared the building, Sybil finally realized she had made her way all the way to the stables. Though scarcely ever place for a lady-in-waiting, Sybil was hardly the sort of young woman anyone ever expected her to be. Not a single horse stood in their stall, which caused her to wonder where anyone would have gone in the blistering cold storm. A dribbling trail of crimson—or was it purple?—caught her attention from the corner of her eye, and she followed it bravely. She could not help her curiosity, thinking it would lead her to a horse she might offer aid to.

Yet, when she reached the end of the colored trail, Sybil's expression dropped. There was a slight twitch beneath a bundle of fibers. A person? A creature? What was hiding beneath the stacks of loose straw? “Who are you?” she shouted, though she had already begun to dig through the hay with her own hands. “Christ. What the hell have you gotten yourself into?” she cursed at the other. “What is that you're wearing?” The real crime there.

They could feel the blood going ice cold inside their veins with the fear of what was to come. Lunara wanted to laugh at their own naivety. How they thought that staying there, within the grasp of the very people who’ve been torturing and tormenting their people for generations, would somehow be better for their escape. Without their abilities there wasn’t much that they could do in order to escape, but they knew they wouldn’t be making this easy for whomever approached. If it meant never seeing their family after that day, at the very least they’d be happy with inflicting some degree of pain to their attacker. 

Pretending to be completely limb at first, in order to delude them into a sense of safety, Lunara didn’t move or respond. It wasn’t until they detected a hint of concern lacing the voice of their opposite that they let themselves speak. “  Please.  ” they replied, imitating the other’s native tongue which varied drastically from that of her people. Lu didn’t speak it fluently like those other prisoners they encountered in the castle's dungeon, but they’d picked up on certain phrases and meanings they could hopefully use in order to make it back home. “  Help me.  ” they wanted to say more, to find a way to instruct the lady to sneak her into the woods where she’d be able to contact her people, but that would give them away. They wholeheartedly believed the only thing keeping the other from yelling out for the guards was Lunara’s human form. 

Though they tried to make more words come out, they hadn’t had a sip to drink since before running from the dungeons. Lunara’s throat burned intensely, making them lurch forward with a round of painful coughs. Their hand found and gripped at the lady’s hands, “  Scared.  ” the whispered, since it was the only octave their larynx would allow. “  Outside is danger.  ”

It's easy to make a villain character nasty. Make the villain a silent killer, an abuser, a bully, a merciless tyrant.

But the how about making a villain who is an utterly malicious influence on people...like a demon from a horror movie

For these villains, corrupting people's minds is a skill. And here's how you can show it.

Decide what corruption means in your story Is it moral compromise, addiction, political radicalization, spiritual rot, greed, cruelty, or the slow loss of empathy. Pick one primary kind so the decline feels clear.

Give the villain a coherent philosophy A corruptor rarely thinks they are evil. They believe they are revealing the truth, freeing people, restoring order, or rewarding the brave. Write that belief as something they could defend in public without sounding insane.

Make their offer emotionally accurate Corruption starts with a relief valve. Safety. Belonging. Status. Revenge. Money. Permission to stop being “good.” The villain should offer what the target already aches for.

Choose targets with specific pressure points People do not fall evenly. Pick characters with bruises. Shame they hide. A hungry ambition. A private fear. A resentment they have kept polite. Corruption grabs what is already loose.

Build a relationship, not a transaction The best corruptors earn trust first. They listen well. They remember details. They make the target feel seen in a way no one else bothers to do. That intimacy becomes the hook.

Start with a small, justifiable step One lie that “protects” someone. One stolen file for a “good reason.” One cruel joke that feels like finally speaking truth. The first step must be easy to excuse.

Let the villain teach a new language Corruption is often vocabulary. “Necessary.” “Realistic.” “Weak.” “Deserved.” “Collateral.” When the target starts using the villain’s words, you can show the shift without speeches.

Use reward, then cost, then relief The target does something wrong and gets a payoff. Then guilt or consequences hit. Then the villain provides relief, reassurance, or a new rationalization. That rhythm creates dependence.

Make the villain control the frame They decide what events mean. A rejection becomes proof the world is rigged. A mistake becomes proof mercy is foolish. If the villain can narrate reality, they can steer choices.

Escalate by narrowing options Each step should reduce the target’s ability to go back. Burn a bridge. Hide evidence. Betray a friend. Once return is expensive, forward motion starts to feel like the only path.

Give the target moments of resistance If the fall is smooth, it feels fake. Add hesitation, self disgust, small attempts to be decent. The villain should respond by tightening the bond or sharpening the threat.

Show the social fallout, not just inner change Corruption is visible in who they avoid, who they mock, what they stop caring about, how they treat weaker people, what they do when no one is watching.

Make the villain’s own stake personal A corruptor wants more than victory. They want to be proven right. They want to replicate themselves. They want company in their darkness. They want a witness who cannot judge them.

Feel free to change pronouns/wordage and switch roles as necessary!

1. Give them power over something the reader cares about A villain who can’t actually hurt anything important is just annoying. Give them control over a person, a system, a truth, or a resource the protagonist and reader are emotionally invested in.

3. Let them feel justified The most infuriating villains believe they’re right. They don’t see themselves as cruel, they see themselves as necessary, logical, or “doing what must be done.”

4. Make them calm while doing terrible things Cold politeness, soft voices, or pleasant manners paired with cruelty feels far more disturbing than loud rage. It creates emotional whiplash that sticks.

5. Give them small, petty cruelty on top of big evil Genocide is abstract. Stealing someone’s last comfort, humiliating someone publicly, or enjoying another person’s fear feels personal — and that’s what makes readers angry.

6. Let them win more than feels fair A villain becomes hateable when they keep getting away with it. Let them succeed. Let them walk free. Let them hurt people without consequence — for a while.

7. Deny the reader catharsis Cut away before justice. Interrupt revenge. Delay consequences. The lack of emotional release builds frustration that gets attached directly to the villain.

8. Make them emotionally invasive They don’t just hurt bodies — they manipulate, gaslight, shame, isolate, and reframe reality. They make the protagonist doubt themselves.

9. Let them corrupt something good They twist love into control, faith into obedience, loyalty into fear, or law into cruelty. Watching something pure rot because of them creates hatred fast.
