My "Do it for him" moment

"I still can't believe you kidnapped me to Singapore," Conan grumbled, accepting the snack that KID had procured from one of the street vendors with only a small pout.

It was still a little unnerving seeing his own face grinning at him.

"As I told you, I need your expertise, dear detective," KID responded, taking a bite out of his own treat. He didn't say anything further.

Conan rolled his eyes, propping his chin up and biting petulantly at his food. He still hated that the thief was yet again using his face. Just because he understood that it was the best disguise to use in this instance didn't mean he had to like it! Even worse was that Ran was here and seemed utterly convinced that Shinichi was there with her.

And he was! Just...not as a teen. He was a small child that smelled vaguely like coconut from whatever KID had used to hide his scent.

Conan frowned.

Actually...now that he thought of it… Why was Ran so accepting that this was Shinichi?

He whipped towards the thief, ignoring the raised eyebrows, and moved before he thought better of it.

Leaning forwards, he stuck his nose against his shoulder and inhaled.

"Meitantei?"

That was his cologne, the one his mother got him when he had entered high school. The one with the really mellow notes that she said went very well with his natural scent. The scent that...that was under that cologne, that he was told smelled like a library in summer: warm, papery, and a hint of leather. All mixed with the undercurrent of beta-cotton.

Conan blinked rapidly.

He couldn't detect whatever scent blocker KID was using. Sure, he had the nose of a child and children didn't have as strong olfactory senses until they presented, but he should have been able to smell that mild sterile scent KID often had on heists.

He grabbed the thief's shoulder and hoisted himself up. Ignoring KID's squawk, he shoved his nose against his neck.

Even there, he smelled of Shinichi's scent and cologne.

Conan shoved the thief away. Or as away as he could.

"How the fuck did you get my scent?" he demanded. "I was wondering how you managed not to tip Ran off on the flight, but this is insane."

KID for his part didn't look as ruffled as Conan had hoped he would. If anything, he looked immensely pleased.

"I've disguised as you enough that I decided I should just make my own Kudo Shinichi cologne," he joked, grinning once again. He spread his hands. "Admittedly I had to use that cologne you had in your room to give it more body. Your natural scent is fairly mild, Meitantei, compared to some other betas I know so devising how to bottle it was a lot of trial and error."

Conan couldn't help the twist of a smile forming on his face. He couldn't imagine it had been very hard to figure out his scent. How hard was paper and ink?

Then again, he couldn't imagine KID going into a library or bookstore, either. The thief was too much like perpetual motion in his mind.

"For such a bland scent?" he remarked. "A boring scent, if you wanna use Sonoko's words."

Compared to Sonoko's own lemongrass or his mother's sweet floral or even his father's leather and fresh cut wood, Shinichi's scent was lacking presence. It was something that could blend into the background. Something that most people didn't even notice when they met him, other than his beta under scent. Maybe some people commented on it, but most didn't notice it like they would another's. 

He found he wasn't looking at KID anymore.

"Now I didn't say that," KID said and Conan glanced at him. The thief raised an eyebrow. "As I said, having such a mild scent made it even more challenging to perfect a cologne that wasn't too weak or too strong. I wouldn't call it bland either with the amount of notes I had to put in to get it just right. Hellish, if anything."

Conan snorted.

"Is that supposed to cheer me up? That I have a challenging scent to reproduce?"

KID shrugged. "You can take it that way."

Conan rolled his eyes. Cautiously, he leaned closer again to smell the cologne.

"...do I really smell like that?" he mumbled, uncertain how to feel.

He liked the scent, but...

He startled at a hand dropping onto his head. Hands raising, he froze at a nose pressing to his scalp.

He still didn't move when KID pulled away.

"I missed some notes, I think," he said, tapping his chin. "You smell much warmer than I initially realized. More on the cozy side than just some stuffy library. All you're missing is the smell of a fireplace and hot cocoa and you'd be like a wintertime retreat!"

Heat rose to his cheeks. Conan covered his face.

Was that a roundabout way for the thief to say he liked his scent? Who called another man cozy!

"Shut up," he muttered. "Who are you calling stuffy!"

"No, no, I called you cozy."

His ears felt hot now.
