gods I need to make a pinned post...
uhhhh this is a pinned post. I'll probably edit it to add stuff in the future.
anyway convenient source images for the speech bubbles I use are here. I also sometimes contribute to the Compendium of Non-Weapon Held Objects, aka the XIV prop list. in addition, you can find modpacks of most of the tweaks and mashups and other stuff I put together and use over here, though please bear in mind most of them haven't really been properly cleaned up or tested and are provided entirely as-is as a resource for those interested. I'll try to keep it up to date as best I remember to, but if something is missing or outdated do let me know.
For combined modpacks and character saves of Kea, Old Kea, Y'shtola and Matoya, see this post.

I haven’t pissed people off lately by reminding them that ALL types of physical punishment of kids has been proven beyond ANY reasonable doubt to have only negative long term outcomes.
So let me scream it from the hilltops:
Stop hitting kids. End of sentence.
If you think, “but I was hit and I turned out just fine” let me pre-reply: NO YOU DID NOT. You think hitting a child is ok, how the fuck does that qualify as “fine”?????? From one abuse survivor to another: please start healing yourself.
The World Health Organization report I highly recommend because there are so many conclusions that are shocking and yet completely obvious.
For example, being exposed to corporal punishment as a kid makes it more likely for a person to commit domestic violence against a partner. In places where corporal punishment is normal, people are more likely to think that rape and intimate partner violence are normal. Kids who are spanked are more likely to be violent with and to bully other kids.
Spanking is literally teaching a kid that violence is okay and normal and it affects the whole society.
It also talks about how corporal punishment affects the brain in its development. It changes the structure of the brain and slows the development of mental abilities. Kids who get spanked have much stronger hormonal responses to stress.

They could feel the energy in the Reach as soon as they walked through the illusioned entrance.
Of course they heard tell of what happened at Castrum Oriens, and how because of it the Eorzean Alliance finally had a presence in Gyr Abania. It is why they had made their own way back, to help where it seemed they would make the most impact.
Still, El had never seen so many people here before, all moving with purpose and with an excitement that was far overdue for the resistance.
Though honestly, it made her nervous.
Too many people, too many opportunities for something to go wrong. Too much has already been sacrificed for them to have this chance. But she couldn’t begrudge them their hope, either.
Perhaps this time would be different.
She let Elio take the lead as they made their way through the camp, heading for the command tent near the back where they would most likely find Kemp. Her eye was caught on an Ananta training some recruits as they walked, so she didn’t notice that he had come to a stop until she ran into him.
“The hells is wrong?”
He didn’t respond, seemingly frozen in place staring off into the distance. El tried to follow his line of sight, though it was difficult with the disparity in their heights. So she scanned the crowd, curious what might cause such a reaction in her companion.
Then she saw her—a big Roegadyn woman in shining golden armor. She was apparently gathering plants around the edge of the water. As she watched she could feel a pull deep in her chest.
El has always been good at reading people, thats what her uncle used to say. She knew now it was more than that: a heavenly gift that allowed her to take the measure of a person on sight. It only took a moment for her to know exactly who this woman was.
The Warrior of Light.
“Robyn?” Elio’s voice was quiet, the question almost a whisper. And yet the woman turned and looked at them. Perhaps she could feel the weight of their stares, or she just happened to look their way at the right moment, but even still El felt a chill run down her spine at her piercing gaze.
The smile that broke across the woman’s face, though, was as warm as the Ala Mhigan sun. She immediately jumped up and jogged towards them. Elio finally seemed to break from his stupor and met her halfway, pulling her into a tight hug.
She watched them from a distance, happy to see Elio’s joy written so plainly across his features.
This must have been the Robyn he had told her about from his time in Thanalan. It was interesting that she turned out to be the Warrior of Light, though from his stories a part of her wasn’t surprised. She had to admit she was curious what her successor was like. Curious to know what made her tick, and what made her fight.
She certainly had the look of a warrior, could imagine how terrifying it would be to see someone her size charging the battlefield. But there was something that didn’t fit her expectations about the way she was gathering herbs before. Or the way she laughed and looked at Elio with so much happiness in her eyes.
All of a sudden, Elio turned and pointed at her, saying something she couldn’t hear. As Robyn looked her way, a blank stare moved across her face—not unlike how Minfilia’s had done a very long time ago. So she had the echo, too.
She idly wondered if Louisoix’s spell would prevent even the echo from seeing anything from before the calamity.
Whatever she saw, it only took a moment to pass and for her smile to once again settle in place. Though this time she had a different look in her eyes—a look like she had taken El’s measure, and was pleased with what it is she found.
They both quickly made their way back to her, but Robyn didn’t stop as she drew closer, instead immediately lifting El off the ground in a strong bear hug.
She didn’t know what to do. Every instinct in her body screamed to fight the woman off but the sound of Elio’s cackling caused her to pause. Instead, in her indecision, she just flailed in the taller woman’s arms, her shock and confusion plain for all to see.
Eventually Robyn put her down, “I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself.” There was mirth in her voice, “I cannot thank you enough for saving this knucklehead’s life. And for looking after him all this time.” She smiled as she put a large hand on Elio’s shoulder.
“I…well, it has been my pleasure. Turns out he is handy to have around.”
“That he is! That he is,” Robyn laughed, loud and clear. “I’m Robyn, by the way. I’ve only arrived here a few hours ago, though if I had known Elio was here, I would have tried to come sooner.”
“I’m El,” she was taken aback at the ease Robyn seemed to exude, unsure how to handle her instant friendliness. “Are you looking to join up with the resistance, then?”
The moon was many things to Ryune. When she was young, it was a mysterious orb that meant it was time for bed. Later, it became a source of light in the long nights as she escaped the grasp of the Garleans with her father and uncle. Then, it became a companion as the nights became oh so familiar on long journeys during her adventures. Now it was simply another place, just as known as any other, filled with people and allies all its own. Yet, when she stared up at it on a clear night, she could still feel the wonder within her, just as much as when she was a child.
Happy belated birthday to the ever charming and gothy @avampyone. I hope it was a good day for you, and that you were celebrated by others, like you deserve.
The leader of Killteam Erishkigal. Quiet, thoughtful and kind, Frey was born on Erishkigal, a world that might be best described as "Hot Fenris". He has proudly served for nearly two centuries in the Space Wolves- primarily as a Wolf Scout.
When his homeworld fell to Slaanesh decades ago, Frey was so stricken with grief that eventually the Wolf Priests recommended he be seconded to Deathwatch until he either found closure or a glorious death to join his people.
He is on his eighth tour.
Rig Coda:
At first meet, Rig seems almost alarmingly well adjusted for a Space Marine, let alone a Lamenter.
An pilot who flies a Thunderhawk like a White Scar rides and sniper who can put out a necron's eye at two clicks, one would start to think his jovial nature and relaxed attitude comes from those skills.
But there are rumours: that Rig has come through the Black Rage that grips all of the Blood Angels and their successors and out the other side- leaving him with a hollow soul, a ledger drenched in the blood of his kin, and an unshakeable belief that they're all going to die horribly, so he might as well have a little fun with it.
Ashraven:
No one is more baffled by Ash's place on this team more than Ash himself.
By far the youngest and least experienced of Killteam Erishkigal, Ash admits he was seconded to Deathwatch with little explanation and as such first comes off with a bit of a chip on his shoulder, to prove he can stand with his more veteran peers, despite his impressive training in the Librarius of the Death Spectres and the breadth of his still-growing powers. Ash is a desperately shy young man, underneath his bravado.
Ash specifically seems to view Cosmo as a rival, but also seems to desperately want his approval. If there's a connection between the two though, it seems to be only on Ash's side?
The Grey Knight [REDACTED]. Then, at the battle of [REDACTED] he [REDACTED]and [REDACTED]. [REDACTED]
His presence here is is [REDACTED].
Sigfried
An incomplete list of things Siegfried hates: Nurgle. Xenos. Psykers. Other Astartes. Adeptus Mechanicus. Micromanagement from Imperial Bureaucracy. But what he hates most of all are standard issue tranqs, stimms and other meds, declaring them to be unfit for a teething baby on his home world.
His homebrew tonics in the style of the patent medicines of the backwater feral dump the Black Templars acquired him from teeter on the edge of heresy in the eyes of some, but despite the anger issues and the bedside manner of a grox, Sigfried has one of the highest rates of survival as a battlefield apothecary. He has never inflicted a tonic on his occasionally unwilling charges that he hasn’t tested on himself, and has dragged a battle brother from the gates of death kicking and screaming more times than anyone can count.
There are a number of possibilities that would have gotten him seconded to Deathwatch for the sake of redemption and reflection, but the discovery that he’d been keeping an ork head alive to culture spores from for medicine is probably up there.
The closest thing the Salamanders have to a real-life Prince Charming. Descendants of one of the great Shamans of Nocturnian history, Ishtavani have been supplying the Salamanders with dutiful, dependable and downright boring recruits for centuries. There is an Ishtavani in every aspect of the Salamanders organisation, including one very old great-great-great uncle in a dreadnought.
Like his predecessors, Imrek is a devout Promethean, and a reliable source of complete devastation on the battlefield. Unlike his predecessors, Imrek sees everything as a puzzle to be solved, which not only leads to him making unsanctioned modifications to everything that he thinks isn't working up to par, but making commentary on the general scheme of the Imperium that gives his Chapter Master and Chaplain the sweats.
Rather than condemn a decorated, devoted brother as a heretic outright, Imrek was given the choice of devoting himself as a Techmarine or spending some time in the Deathwatch. Imrek has seen his friends and relatives return from Mars as... not quite themselves, and so chose a tour in the Deathwatch.
(Cosmo is immediately a puzzle to be solved)
Cosmos Alexandrios:
A Blood Raven (in spirit if not in body) since he was six, on paper Cosmo is the platonic ideal of his Chapter: a pretenaturally talented psyker, far too smart for his own good, ruthlessly dedicated to the preservation of knowledge and relics, and clever as all hell. Unfortunately, some of Cosmo's recent unorthodox missions have put a spotlight on him and the Chapter that Gabriel Angelos would prefer... not.
While publicly, sending Cosmo to Deathwatch seems a punishment, almost, and a chance to get himself right, it's more than that. Gabriel has seen something in his young librarian that will have far reaching ramifications for the Chapter but he will need to grow much stronger before it can come to fruition.
Although he hides it well, Cosmo is plagued by recurrent nightmares of being dragged into a torrential black river, and his cleverness is fuelled by an ability to see the threads of fate and causality better than librarians far more experienced.
Inquisitor Melodia:
The mysterious inquisitor who has requested this very specific group of Astartes for a mission into a terrifying sector of space.
While she seems to be of ancient Holy Terran noble house, her past is shrouded in darkness. But her credentials are unimpeachable, and her demeanor unshakeable.
While she gives almost nothing away about herself, she seems to know more about the killteam given to her than they do themselves.

the problem is basically that heat is a form of energy, right? And it's generally a lot easier to add energy to a system than it is to take it away - compressor-based AC units actually generate a lot more heat than they do cooling, they just move that heat somewhere else where it doesn't bother us as much.
the way they work is actually not all that complicated either: you basically take a bunch of gas - could even be regular air but usually isn't as it isn't as efficient for it - and then you run that through a compressor. Now the thing about gas is that it's always* in motion - all the little atoms and molecules are all bouncing around every which way constantly, and by compressing that gas into a much smaller space, you drastically reduce the amount of moving around that's possible, and since energy can't be destroyed and only ever transformed from one form to another, all that kinetic energy ends up doing what most forms of energy does when it has nowhere else to go: it becomes heat.
Now you take that hot, compressed gas and lead it through a bunch of tubes with air passing over them, releasing some of that heat into the air, and that's the hot end of the AC, venting out the heat generated from compressing all that gas.
And then, once the gas has had the opportunity to cool off a bit, you lead it into a second set of tubes that are much wider and more spacious - suddenly that compressed gas got all this space to move around in again, and so it rapidly expands and decompresses to fill this new area. However, to do so, it needs to regain all that kinetic energy that it lost to heat when compressed, and so it ends up absorbing heat back into motion, cooling down in the process. And, of course, by passing air over these tubes as well, the passing air loses some of its own heat to the cold tubes, and that's the cold air outlet for the AC.
And then you just feed that final set of tubes back into the compressor and you end up with a closed loop where the gas medium is constantly being cycled between states of compression and decompression in order to absorb heat from one end and then emit it out the other.
This, by the way, is also why those compressed air** can dusters get so cold when you use them - the rapid decompression absorbs ambient heat to drive the expansion of the gas, it's just that the heat that was emitted during the compressive stage was in this case released at the factory instead.
(* there is an exception to this - heat and motion are intrinsically linked, and as a gas gets colder, its constituent molecules move slower and slower; this is how scientists arrived at the concept of an absolute zero temperature of -273.15 °C / -459.67 °F - it represents the point when it is so cold that the molecules in a gas cease moving entirely and thus can no longer get any colder)
(** "compressed air" spray cans are not actually compressed air but instead use some sort of drive gas much like any other spray can. To contain actual compressed air, the cans would need to have much thicker walls and probably different materials to safely withstand the pressure involved)
