I feel like I need to share this because idk if Europeans are familiar with the presence of Aldi in the US, but at least especially in my area theyâve been growing a lot recently. Like Aldi bought out some local failing grocery chains where I live (Louisiana) and have opened Aldis in all these somewhat rural communities and small towns, which for the record Iâm fine with
But as a result of this they are advertising a lot more in my area and also in many cases, the people in these areas have never been confronted with Aldi or any European grocery store. So the ads that Aldi is pushing out to its new US customer base feature a cowboy shopping at Aldi who is explaining to new Aldi customers how Aldi works. Like this cowboy is explaining you gotta put a quarter in the shopping cart and why there are very little name brands. A cowboy is how they want to reach their American customer base. They gave us a cowboy
Here he is, the Aldi Cowboy

They released an album too! I don't think this song is on it but the rest of their stuff is SO GOOD !!

Got any tips in shading stuff in black and white digitally?
Hi Anon!
You're in luck! I'm currently wrapping up a book which is shaded digitally, so I've been thinking a lot about this recently.
How I do this is by no means the only way, so take from these tips as much or little as you want! When I add grays and shadows to a line art drawing, I try to think about these things:
Preparing the image
I like to work with a file that has a white background and a layer with only line art on top of it. Between these two layers I add new layers where I use the pen tool and bucket to fill areas with black, then I lower the opacity for that layer to get a value that I want.
This method works well for me, and for simpler pieces I don't need more than 3 layers with different values - light, medium and dark grays.
I work in Clip Studio. Here's a picture of the layers of a recent drawing. Each layer is actually completely black but you can see the opacity percentages by each layer. Lower percentage -> brighter value. This makes it super duper easy to change the value of a layer, no need to repaint it, just change the opacity!
Value composition
For the best result, do a couple of value sketches with a limited set of values and find something that works well for the image. Getting the values right is what will improve the image the most! Here's a quick tutorial on muddycolors. Muddy Colors is a very nice art blog to check out. Looking at grayscale storyboard drawings or value sketches are great ways to pick up on this too.
I try to group values when working with grays. Take this image for example:
The character in the foreground has mainly dark grays, which separates her from the background, which has mostly light grays. Then the windows are white and the roof black.
Value composition is a huge and complex area and I recommend anyone wanting to learn to be more conscious about their values and to do value sketches. Analysing art you think has good values is great too.
Shadows
Not every piece needs shadows, but they can add a lot to an image! I use three kinds of shadows when I work in grayscale.
Inked shadows - these shadows are added during the inking stage and usually show areas where light would have almost no way of getting there, such as under this tent.
Gradient shadows - these shadows usually represent something getting further and further away from a light source or an area that would bounce light. This tree receives a tiny bit of light from a campfire on the ground and moonlight that bounces on the ground and up, fading as we get higher up in the tree. But mainly I add these gradients in ways that look cool and will help the overall composition.
Hard shadows - these shadows appear when a strong light casts shadows and can be used on a shape or to cover something. Here's a werewolf with shadows on its back, which gives it a better sense of mass and is interesting visually!
You can also cover an area in shadow like this, where the tree casts a shadow down on the archer and the cliff.
Texture
I like to add a layer of noise as a finishing touch. In Clip Studio you can create a noise layer with Filter->Render->Perlin noise... Find a balance of scale and amplitude that works for the image, then change the layer mode to "Vivid Light" and lower the opacity of the layer to around 30%. I like how this looks, it's not super visible usually but helps make the drawing feel less artificial and digital.
I hope that helps! Here are some nice links too:

they put my blood through every test under the sun and yet nowhere in the pages and pages of lab reports do they tell me what my blood type is
your neutrophils absolute? 2.71. anion gap? why, that's 11! hemoglobin A1C? a solid 5.4. and don't fret, champâyour VLDL (calculated) is a cool 12. real fascinating stuff. hm? what's that? you want to know what kind of blood you have? like, so you won't have to look your next ER nurse in the eye and tell her you have no clue what type you have right after giving her a date of birth that confirms you are over 30 years old? psh, don't be silly! we can't tell you that! it's a â¨secretâ¨
do you know your blood type??
yes, I'm certain of it
I think my family told me what it was but I'm not sure/no recent test to confirm
no, I have no clue
I don't have blood/results

There's a fascinating phenomenon that isn't unique to tumblr, but which I have certainly seen here a lot, which I'm going to call the Default Assumption of Incompetence. It's when somebody has the baffling habit of always starting from the assumption that other people do not know anything about anything, or at least that having more knowledge than the assumer is extremely rare and statistically unlikely. To do this, they will frequently go out of their way to ignore context clues that indicate otherwise, or in some cases the assumer simply doesn't know enough about the subject at hand to be able to estimate whether or not this person knows what they are doing.
The assumer will see a social media post about someone's mushroom harvest, which clearly only contains exactly two distinct kinds of mushrooms, which the poster has identified and correctly named in the post itself, and the assumer will feel compelled to warn the forager to be careful out there! Some mushrooms are poisonous and they should be very careful to only pick ones they can identify! The assumer, who has ignored the fact that the poster did identify both of the mushroom species they had picked, and can most likely be trusted to do so in the future as well, has naturally assumed that the person showing off the results of their latest mushroom haul must have been obliviously picking them at random like an unsupervised toddler who is lucky to be alive.
If someone makes a post talking about how they just got a new job as a bus driver, the assumer might swoop in to warn them that driving a bus is extremely dangerous! It's so dangerous that it's literally illegal to do that unless you have a specific special training for doing that! Even a normal driver's license isn't good enough, you need a special license for it! And when the person who just got hired as a bus driver verifies that yes, they know that, they do have the license to drive a bus, and that they wouldn't have even hired someone who doesn't. The first question of the job interview was about making sure that they have a valid license for driving this type of vehicle.
"Well how was I supposed to know that?" is the assumer's standard answer to being corrected. Not embarrassed or apologetic, only defensive and insulted, as if the other person here is the one being unreasonably rude for implying that it was stupid of the assumer to assume that someone who just got a job driving a bus might not know how to drive a bus.
stupid but giggled
Madara Uchiha was truly an innovation. Egomaniac with the worst coping mechanisms Iâve ever seen. Has an amazing ass fight with Maito Gai, love of my life and single handed savior of my galaxy, where he mentions several times how he reminds him of his on again off again ex boyfriend of the last one hundred years and only person he thinks deserves human rights. He has the spite of a gay man whoâs never properly been dicked down and the ambition of a divorcee who knows theyâre still hot despite their heartbreak. Looks like dilf shadow the hedgehog and turns into a wizard with cum skin while trying to be God. Got his ass kicked by a man half naked in leg warmers straight out of a Jazzercise VHS after belittling some orphans for participating in the war he started so everyone can have constant wet dreams. ďżź
this is still the best madara post on this website tbh
when i was a kid i was so mad all the time bc i thought someday i'd have to be somebody's wife i didn't know it was optional. is everybody reminding the young girls in their lives that it's optional.
AND SO IS BEING SOMEBODY'S MOTHERâźď¸
it is about being a woman. hope that helps!
reading comprehension questions for the notes:
is wanting to be a wife and mother a requirement for being a woman?
why might OP be annoyed with replies assuming that this post is about being aroace or transmasc if a woman doesnât want to be a wife or mother?
are there reasons unrelated to sexuality and romantic interest that might make a woman not want to be a wife or mother?
are there reasons unrelated to gender identity and expression that might make a woman not want to be a wife and mother?
core concept: what is gender essentialism?
is it gender essentialism to imply that all women inherently want to be wives and mothers? could this be what OP is critiquing?
look at the notes OP responds to. is it gender essentialism to imply that being a wife and mother is so affixed to womanhood that to not want to be those things means youâre incapable of sexual/romantic feelings, or not a woman?
what trait are you perpetuating when you assume that women who do not want to be wives and mothers must be aroace or trans? is it gender essentialism?

Hello internet user whose entire concept of feminism comes from tiktok. In front of you are three ancient myths about women. You have five minutes to figure out which one of them was made up in the 1970s. If you choose wrong, you will be ripped to pieces by Maenads.
Okay since everyone wants the test, instead of giving you three myths hereâs several myths. One of them is a real Greek myth with sources of it from ancient times and the rest of them are fake. One of the misconceptions was specifically invented in the 70s.
1. In every version of the myth, Medusa is born a human and Athena turns her into a monster
2. Hestia, goddess of the hearth and family, willingly gave up her place as the 12th Olympian to make room for Dionysus
3. Persephone chose Hades and wandered into the underworld of her own free will
4. Pandora didnât know what was in her jar and unleashed evils on humanity by accident
5. During the voyage of the Argonauts the huntress Atalanta beat the hero Peleus the father of Achilles in a wrestling match
6. King Midas of Phrygia decided to give up his golden touch after turning his daughter to gold
7. Aphrodite was widely worshipped as a war goddess in Greece
lmao I promise you that only one of these is real.
Hiding the answers under a cut in case you wanna guess on your own.
#5 is the real one. You can find a reference to Atalanta wrestling Peleus at funeral games while on the journey of the Argo in The Library by Pseudo-Apollodorus.
This is an artistic depiction of the event from a piece of pottery currently being held in Staatlishe Museum Berlin.
The one invented in the 1970s was the one about Persephone going down to the underworld herself. This was invented by Charlene Spretnak in her book Lost Goddesses of Early Greece and is often spread falsely as a real myth without crediting her.
Explanations for all of them, again under a cut.
Ovid invented the version where Medusa was originally a woman and Ovid hated most of the gods on principle. Also, he was Roman. The earliest versions of gorgon myths depict her and her sisters as being born as monsters.
There's no reference in ancient mythology to Hestia giving up her spot. In some regions she was one of the 12 Olympians, and in others Dionysus was on the list instead. The idea that she stepped down was invented by modern writers who like to have coherent logic in their stories.
Explained above. A bit of creative writing.
Pandora according to Hesiod was the first woman and perfectly aware of what was in her jar. She was created as part of the punishment for mankind. Human women didn't exist before Pandora according to Hesiod. But because Hesiod was misogynistic even by ancient Greek standards, writers and artists after the ancient Greek religion died out re-characterized her as stupid and curious rather than evil.
5. As explained above, real.
6. This version was invented by Nathaniel Hawthorne. In the original myth, Midas just got hungry. No Daughter involved.
7. Aphrodite was worshiped as a war goddess mostly in Sparta and sort of Rome as Venus. Most Greeks weren't comfortable culturally with the idea of a goddess of love also being a goddess of war so in most of Greece she was just a goddess of love.
Guys this post isn't about neo-pagans and a lot of you are reading this as me hating new retellings or something. I have nothing against any of these stories. I just get frustrated when people "well actually" me about the "original" version of a myth when they have no sources for what they're saying. These stories not being exactly the way you thought they were doesn't have to mean anything. It's fine.
In general: never trust a claim about a myth's real or original form/interpretation. With stories 2000 years old, or older, which were largely transmitted orally, there will always be countless versions specific to both places and times. Stories evolve! The ones for which we have attested written sources represent barely a fraction of the ones which actually existed and the commentaries written on them!
There is no secret true version of a myth. All we can do is analyze the versions of the myths we have according to their context.
"oldest known version" = correct
"original version" = incorrect, bad, do not say this
also don't assume that the oldest known version is the One True Version either
Also why did OP start off with such a condescending line. like what does knowing the oldest versions of myths have to do with tik tok OR feminism đ
Hello Iâm right here and I can see what youâre saying. When I wrote this Iâd been getting a lot of âum actuallyâ messages that were from people who know way less about Greek mythology than I do who were spreading misinformation based on stuff made up by feminist retellings and from astrology websites and this entire exercise was mostly me venting my frustrations about people being so wildly uninformed about something I know a lot about.
Iâve had to reiterate multiple times that Iâve got no issue with the existence of retellings. What Iâve got an issue with is people claiming something was part of Ancient Greek religion when it very much wasnât and I have an issue with people not giving credit to writers, being a writer myself. Charline Spretnakâs retellings she made for her at the time young daughters have been spread around as âthe true versionâ of different myths without crediting her. Even in published works. I personally canât enjoy âthe totally real less sexistâ versions of stories when youâre stealing a modern womanâs work without crediting her and ignoring the real culture of a real people who existed at the same time.
Ancient Greece was incredibly sexist. I understand the urge a lot of people have to soften that a bit in their minds but that doesnât change anything about what actually happened. And now I feel like I have to defend myself for being frustrated about this when all I wanted to do over a year and a half ago was like vent some frustration and spread some knowledge that maybe 200 people would see. You never know which one of your rants will end up on the front page news when it comes to the internet. Or when. Somehow this post is blowing up again and finding every possible interpretation of my intentions under the sun while pretending Iâm not here.
