Going out with Vada had quickly become Lilyâs normal. One she was thankful for, Vada was one of the few people she never had to worry about saying the wrong thing with. Lily followed Vadaâs gaze over towards the door. Her smile grew, dimples showing. August was probably her other favorite person right now. What better than a night out with both of them? âA wild August, look at that. Congratulations, babe. You are an honorary hot girl tonight. Very prestigious club between us.â She waved him over quickly as she leaned her head on Vada dramatically. âRules are simple. You buy the next round. Whatever Vada wants, so probably more Vodka because she hates my liver. No one says anything depressing till three am.â She paused before deciding to poke at her friends ever so slightly. âAnd if either of you says anything meaningful. Iâm calling security.â Passing a shot over to him before taking her own. She winced slightly at the taste but shook it out. âTo the dream team, babes.â

â   "you heard me, dad went on a date, with the lady friend, in public." riley leans over the table as if it was the busiest piece of gossip he'd ever heard in his life. "like a functioning human being." did he expect his father to be the kind of divorced man that spent his time in social isolation? absolutely. so the the turn of events of catching his father dressing up and pulling out a chair for a lady had riley's jaw on the floor.

She was typically quick with her words, but the news of her father going out on an actual date was beyond what her brain could handle. âIâm sorry. I donât think my brain knows what to do with that.â She said, putting her glass down slowly. âYou're saying. Dad. Our father. Went on a date with another human being, in public, where people could actually see him,â she said slowly, trying to process. âRiley. Be fucking serious right now.â she laughed softly. The idea was enough to leave Lily speechless. Which was something that rarely happened between the two of them.

She doesn't know all the details of what had gone down with Lily and Winnie, and maybe that's why standing next to her in the line for coffee feels a little like betrayal. It's awkward in a way Grace isn't usually, because even if it weren't for their fall out, she still has her own shame to feel around everything with Riley. But, she and Frankie are besties now, so that should make them all good, right? "So..." She drawls, lips pursed. "When you were fixing your brothers closet, did you take some pieces for yourself or something?"

Lily had decided to have a quiet morning. Which, in her opinion, should have been considered growth of some sort. However, her plan had failed when the other had begun to speak. There were complications between them, and Lily did what she always did with complications. âI update my wardrobe constantly. Some say itâs a problem. Some say itâs creative,â She said. She wasnât sure if it was a dig at her current outfit, which she'd put together in less than five minutes. âI fixed my brotherâs clothing choices, thanks for noticing. Heroically, thanklessly, and without support. He stood there acting like I was personally inconveniencing him.â
riley: in the context of you, yes. but for the rest of the rational world, not so much. riley: last time you got a hold of a drill your smile bordered on maniacal. riley: nice segue. riley: pretty good actually. riley: elmo was my best friend, you don't come between a four year old and his emotional dependancy on a fluffy red muppet.

'Jason smiled softly at her. "I always wanna talk to you. Besides I'd really like to tell my parents we can finally eat at Al Tavolo all together." Even though they haven't been speaking, they lived in a small town where unfortunately everyone knew everything about each other. He nodded. "Yeah that would be great. I think we've moved away from doorway confrontation territory."

Lily nodded softly and moved out of the way to let Jason in. âYeah, doorway conversations felt aggressive.â She closed the door behind him and really glanced at her place for the first time. Great. It was a disaster. Not shocking, but still made her pause. âIgnore the place, it's been a week, and apparently, my living situation took the hit,â she let out a soft laugh. âAnd, for the record, they can still eat at Al Tavolo. Iâm a professional.â Professional was a strong word. âMostly. Like, eighty percent of the time. Seventy if someone orders the trout and then complains that it tastes like fish, because then I do become verbally at risk.â

Lily saw Maeve almost immediately, and she consequently spent the next 10 minutes debating whether to pretend she hadnât or to just talk. She was still herself, so the internal debate had naturally led her to talk. âKid? Wow. Iâm twenty six now and you're still calling me that? Iâm practically a grown woman now, unfortunately for everyone,â she said with mock offense. She wanted to ask if she and Riley were friends again, but she was actively trying not to make that problem worse. So instead, she just kept her mouth moving. âSo Kaiâs performing tonight, right? Or did you secretly become a huge fan of small town singing? Because if so, you are about to be thriving, babe.â

Lily glanced over from the counter she had been leaning on as she took the delivery. She had been asked to oversee the delivery, which immediately made Lily ask her manager if that meant she was the most trustworthy employee. Probably not. âGwyn, this is why you are literally my favorite.â She nodded at the crates that were now stacked. Lily could check them herself, but she trusted that if Gywn said they were there, they probably were. âI mean, I feel like morally I should ask for details⊠but financially Iâm already leaning yes.â She shrugged. âI have both free time and a deeply concerning lack of self-preservation instincts. "I think we as a society really fell off when we stopped throwing tomatoes at shitty performers." He halfheartedly lamented as the two of them predictably made their way to one of the bars. There was fuck all to do in between sets anyway. "We should've tried to smuggle some in and sold them at double the cost. Could've turned a decent profit." And then promptly get kicked out, surely. Which he actually needed to avoid for once considering the multiple people in some of the later performances. "As one of my best friends," mock seriousness rested on his features as he looked over at Lily, "you'd do me the favor of killing me if I ever publicly embarrassed myself the way some of these fuckers are, right? It'd be like the equivalent of putting me out of my misery if I got bit by a zombie, if you really think about it."

âTomatoes: the fixer of societyâŠâ She mused, pretending to consider the sentiment. Before giving him a quick nod. âI support it honestly. Throwing it at some guy with an acoustic guitar singing Hozier? Thatâs, like, a wildly valid use of vegetables and making a profit? Gold star idea,â Lily shrugged as if the idea wasnât terrible. The idea was tempting, but she had made it a goal of not being so impulsive that sheâd get kicked out. âOh my god, letâs not skip the fact you just called me one of your best friends.â She placed a hand on her chest, dramatic as ever. âX, Iâm honored, truly. I feel like I should frame this moment of softness.â She teased, leaning her hip against the bar, where they had just arrived. âDo you know how annoying it would be to hide the evidence of that? Iâm not looking for more work.â She laughed softly. âHowever, Iâd make fun of you so much you wished I had. So if you think about it, same thing.â
she couldnât help but agree, head nodding along. " yeah, you're  right. it feels good to  finally be around people who just get you, you know? i get how badly bea wants this, and i know cleo does too. i  think  that's what makes us the fucking  dream team. " itâs what sheâs been looking for as well, considering her old bandmates didnât seem to want it as badly as she does. then  again,  maybe thereâs a reason why her little band fell apart â she wouldnât have ended up in ruby valentine if it hadnât, and she might never have gotten the chance to be in a band with bea and cleo, both of whom she sees as great role models. in the end, it all works out, and she can only hope things will get better. it has to. " uh-huh, lilyâs coming. you and her are  pretty tight, right? " vada asks, though she doesnât really  wait for an answer before speaking again. " nah,  it's  fine.  we  can  just  share  the  menu.  i'll  order  everything  else  when  my  girl  gets  here,  yeah?  "
it took everything in her to inhale slowly, push a smile to her lips, and say: âthe dream team.â because even if winnie found herself overwhlemed with jealousy in vada's presence, she couldn't deny the metrics. whatever they all found together was clearly working, and whatever winnie could bring to the table would only weigh them down. she opened her mouth to respond, but only managed a choked syllable before vada barreled on. desperate for something to keep her hands busy ( before the fingernails pressed into her palm broke skin ), she untied and retied her apron tighter than before. âperfect.â she doesn't bring up the face that she knew lily's order by heart, doesn't offer anymore information, simply turned on her heel to retrive the diet coke.Â
âșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°âșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°ïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©â
Lily pushed the diner's door open quickly, bells chiming behind her. Her eyes quickly scanned for Vada, fully ready to explain the horrors of the walk over. Though when they landed, they paused. Lily saw Vada, but she also saw Winnie. They had apologized, made up mostly, and Lily knew there was a chance that she would be here (she had been coming to annoy Winnie at work since she had started at Shirleyâs). Even with all that, there was still lingering tension and fear of making things worse that she couldnât overcome. âSo sorry Iâm late, babe. I got distracted because a couple was wearing matching scarves, and it was a lot. I needed to recover emotionally.â She slid into the seat across from Vada. âDid you already order because I think the only way Iâm getting over that is food and probably a Coke.â She said fast, forcing her voice somewhere between normal and careful. âHey, Wins. Shift good?â she said, giving the other a small smile. She didnât go into some long tangent or over-explanation, which, for Lily, felt wrong.

Lily glared at him as he sat down, but the smile was threatening to show at the corners of her mouth. âNo. I am obviously not singing. I prefer that it stay between me and my car radio, thank you very much. I do have some dignity left.â She rolled her eyes fondly. The comment came easily as it often did with her brother. âIâm here because Vada promised me a free drink and the possibility of someone embarrassing themselves. Real supportive friend moment, try not to look shocked. I know not my brand. â Lily gave him a small, teasing smile. âBut just so you know, you are the leading candidate for watching someone embarrass themself. Thereâs still time, though.â
â "oh yeah?" riley raises a brow, resting his hip against the countertop. "last time i tried to grow a beard you straight up laughed." maybe he felt some sort of way in the moment, but it did look funny. a bit too patchy. "i think you said something along the lines that i look like tom hanks from castaway." that was not the kind of tom hanks riley would like to look like.
"i got by just fine in high school dressing the way i did." riley wasn't exactly the most popular kid in town, but he was well liked. he clothes didn't really seem to change that fact, rather he just fit the archetype he was happy to be placed in â the small town coastal boat guy. "i'll let you live in your little delusions." riley rolls his eyes, fondly, moving onto the next bag. "oh, i'm well aware."

âOkay, but I wasnât wrong, Riles.â Lily laughed softly, shaking her head. âThat comparison was completely fair, and you know it. It was giving ship wreck man, and you know it. We all have strengths, but facial hair is not yours,â she shrugged. Lily wouldnât be herself if she werenât teasing her brother. They had been like this since they were young. Poking at each other and rarely ever serious.Â
âRight, and we are all striving to not change from our high school ways. Should I tell Ris that?â She raised an eyebrow. âLeaving my delusions alone. They keep our family functional.â Probably not, but she didnât slow down to actually listen to her words. âBesides pretending this wasnât needed is honestly a bigger delusion, plus, you couldâve said no,â she nudged him softly. A joke didn't come quite as quickly as it should've, considering the words a little too seriously maybe. He didn't want to be forgettable and easy to let go of, but sometimes he didn't know how to be comfortable with the opposite. "Being selectively forgettable doesn't sound so bad. That way, I can get groceries without getting cornered by some little old lady whose house I egged when I was like twelve." He took a drag before continuing, "It was over fifteen years ago and she's old as shit, how does she even remember that?" Did he care about that particular incident? No, but it was amusing enough to hide behind. Xavier nodded in agreement. It was safer that way anyway. They could let everyone see nothing but surface chaos so they'd want nothing to do with the pair and then they couldn't get left again. Spare themselves the pain.
"Fuck, if that's what we're calling rock bottom then I have nothing to worry about. Wouldn't even know where to start with pretending." Laughter shook his chest, but there was nothing dishonest about his words. Instability had always been part of his life. It made calm hard to fully trust. Like he should be bracing for something instead of enjoying it. Free hand went to his chest, "Hey, listen, I'm just as disappointed as you. Next time I'll come up with a very generic acceptance speech that I can pull out of my back pocket for whenever you're feeling overly generous. Even hire some former orchestra kids to follow me around and play some fancy ceremony music when the time comes." He squinted at the night sky as if genuinely considering the logistics of that, "Scratch that, too pricey for me. I'll just pay some guy five bucks to hum or something."
He looked back over at her with a small smile, "I'll consider it." Xavier wasn't going to do anything on his birthday, but the thought was appreciated. He listened quietly. This was another place where they were extremely similar to one another because everything she said rang just as true for him. He shifted so he could lay back on the ground as he thought of how to reply to his own question. "Same sort of thing." He took another drag and watched the smoke against the night sky. Irritated that some comment from someone he didn't even like dug under his skin enough to think about this. "Feels like everyone's minds are already made up, and that's fine, I don't really care and I know I play into it. But, maybe, it'd be nice if that wasn't the case with everyone and a few people expected more, I guess." He figured the chances of that were astronomically low in their small hometown where everything stuck. "I know it's our thing," he began, "to be very unserious, but you know you don't have to be any one thing with me, right? Whatever's not too much or not enough." He'd blame the moment of sincerity on a conversation he had months ago with Lennon. Something about it made him want to make sure he was showing up for the very select few he trusted not to abandon him. "Like, I'm not going to bail again, I mean."
âșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°âșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°ïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©ââșËâïœĄÂ°â©â
âShit, twelve year old you shouldâve known not to mess with the old ladies in this town. They are brutal.â She laughed. He wasnât wrong that being selectively forgettable might be desirable at times. Though Lily hadnât figured out how to manage that one either, so she just defaulted to loud. For better or for worse. âYou became neighborhood lore with that one. They probably have your picture posted somewhere.â She shook her head. âFuck, X. Me either. Besides, this is thriving. Weâre outside, and neither of us has made a life-altering decision in the last ten minutes. We are practically killing it.â She nudged him softly with her knee. She wasnât sure she could believe she was thriving, but she could pretend.
âIâm going to hold you to that. So come prepared next time, or I will be very disappointed in your lack of preparation,â she teased softly, letting out a small laugh. âNo, wait, I love that. And, hey, Iâd even chip in a dollar to the humming guy fund.â She laughed, imagining the scene in her head. âLike, imagine you thanking me specifically and some guy from the corner going mmmm-mmm. Priceless.â She hadnât forgotten how similar she and Xavier were. The two of them had a way of understanding each other even when most of the words went unsaid. âSometimes I think people just think itâs easier to not believe thereâs more to peopleâs stories than just the label.â She hummed. Typically, she didnât care. She preferred it, actually; it was easier to be the girl who talked too much than to let people in. âBut, you know thatâs a them problem. Very lazy character work on their part, I guess.â It was Lily's way of saying that she knew he wasnât just his label. She hoped he understood it.Â
Lily stilled at his next words, not because she didnât appreciate them. But they were unexpected. Hearing that she wasnât too much or not enough was a reassurance that Lily often sought inadvertently. âWow⊠That was dangerously close to sincere, babe.â She said, immediately trying to laugh off the depth of the conversation. She stayed quiet, blowing out the smoke, watching it expand in front of her. âBut I know. Thatâs kind of why I dragged you here.â She nodded, the honesty falling more into her voice. âNot in like a dramatic way with a speech and powerpoint⊠but I just didnât want to keep pretending anymore.â She shrugged. Xavier had always been the person she could lean on when she wasnât fully ready to admit what was bothering her. He never pressured or pushed her to share more than she was willing. âAnd for the record⊠I donât blame you for leaving. Like I get it. It sucked, but I got it.â She wanted to reassure him that there was no animosity from the past. Lily really wasnât one to judge or hold grudges. âIâve almost left countless times. So yeah. I get it. More than I probably should.â If it hadnât been for fear of hurting others, the town she probably wouldâve acted on the impulse. âBut thanks⊠Iâm glad you're back.â
