"how much would I have to pay you to give someone a tattoo of my choice?" payback can be just so sweet. "temporary, in case that wasn't clear. I want to ruin his week, not his life." a shrug. "and you'd have to make it seem like he's choosing, so he doesn't get suspicious and chicken out. he's, like, annoyingly impossible to blackmail, so I'm going to need convincing deception. I can get him here and keep him distracted, though, so shouldn't be much work for you."

"you know, I think your sister is trying to keep us apart." mateo hums, shifting his weight between his feet as they wait in line. "really can't imagine why..." he's sure lark would tell him if he asked, though, list them out in the longest sentence she's ever rewarded him with. maybe he should ask. "anyway, the high striker just wouldn't be fair. I mean... c'mon." he can't help grin as he points from julian to himself, sleeves pulled up to his shoulders for a reason. palms rub together, "ready to get your ass kicked at hoopla?"

god, he feels like he could throw up right now. he's so grateful he's in company that knows him less closely, likely just think he's his normal level of not normal. hopefully won't think twice about the way he's twisting one of the rings on his left hand and shifting his weight back and forth. "you know, I heard they've rigged the high striker to make it harder to win. don't ask me to try it, please— I'll never live it down."

he should be more aware of the risks of surprising someone from behind, arms wrapped around her waist and feet lifted off the ground, but mateo's dealt with far worse than a shocked elbow to the nose, so he doesn't think twice. "junie!" partly because he can't resist, and partly so she knows it's him before he puts her back down. "I didn't know you were coming, are you having a good night? did you get a secret mission? have you done it yet? can I help?" too many questions, but he's itching to get involved in some kind of chaos.

"that fortune teller stuff is nonsense." god, don't let the girls hear her right now. it's for a good cause! "and it's expensive. for the low price of five bucks, I'll tell you there's bright lights," arms waved at the carnival around them, "and small victories," to the hook a duck over the way, "in your future." grace's eyes roll. "tell me you don't believe in this stuff?"

"would you believe it," she gasps, hand over her heart, "forgot my jacket and my purse." but not the enormous handbag on her arm, which absolutely contains her purse that's already seen plenty of action so far. not a jacket, though. that she had intentionally left at home. "if only there were a man around here who could save me from this drinkless, snackless, cold end to my night..."

oh, this is just perfect. like taking candy from a baby. "ten bucks says I can dunk this loser in two throws." because grace is actually about as confident in her ability to nail it as vada will be, so at least two shots gives her a fighting chance, and she's sure vada would scoff at three, too. say it's too generous. "what do you say?"
