we're fallin' in love

it would've been their first valentine's together. that isn't lost on him; in fact, it's the reason he hasn't left his flat all day, just dragging himself out of bed to eat first thing in the morning, caffeinate, shower and then take his misery to the sofa with lucky sleeping soundly on his chest. it's why the knock at his door catches him by such surprise. it must be a delivery, because he doesn't recognise the knock. he hadn't ordered anything, but he wouldn't put it past winter to know the date, to know the state he's been in lately will mean he won't have eaten for hours, today especially. but, then they knock again — softer this time, hesitant, and for a split second, he gets his hopes up. he already has enough heartache, so he crushes them on the way to the door; you're the last person she's going to want to see today of all days, he reminds himself, she said her chest hurts just standing next to you, there's no way— "hi." breathless, wide eyed, yet alert enough to stand just to the side, so that if she wants to come in, she only has to take a step forward, but there's no pressure, no expectation from him. "is everything okay?"

he opens his mouth to defend himself, but only laughter follows, so he promptly shuts it and presses a hand to his mouth. “well, the pretty girls are all wearing prairie dresses this summer." perhaps not the best thing to say, but he hopes it's evident through tone alone that he's joking. “i'm telling you, grace, you're gonna be so ahead on this trend. one day we'll laugh together about this.” 

"well…!" she starts, all but stomping her feet. "why do you need to look at other pretty girls when I'm right here anyway!" she's well aware he'd been joking, that she'd brought it up first, but it doesn't stop the ugly feeling blooming in her chest. "or are you just trying to make me unattractive so no one looks twice at me?" what she'll choose to believe, even if he says no, so it quietens the voices in her head. "I don't know if I believe that you really like this…" narrowed eyes. "if anything, I thought you'd have me dressed up like one of those creatures in those movies you like. like liv tyler. she's pretty.”

it's embarrassing. he can't remember the last time he had any of this stuff. had been too strict on his diet all these years? technically, somewhere along the line, it'd probably saved his life to be at his peak physical fitness, but has he ever been at his peak joy if he hasn't had cinnamon sugar churros since he was too small to remember? "probably classic, yeah." he nods, grin bright at his now new friend. "I'm usually a lot more adventurous, but it's been so long, I think I've forgotten what good churros taste like."

he'd wonder what everyone in this damn town has against him if he wasn't painfully self aware. "that depends on how good your aim is." todd answers instead, lips drawn tight. he'll definitely be dunking winston and kai for getting him into this, even if he has to cheat. "why? who do you know that I've pissed off this time?"

"Wow that's a lot of trust you're putting into me. What if I drew a dick on your face?" She joked as she dried off her large brush on the paper towel. Margot looked at Mateo for a few seconds before an idea came to her mind and she dipped her brush into the first paint. "How are you enjoying the carnival so far?" She asked as she turned his face slightly and started the design on the left side of his face.

"then I'd wear it with pride." mateo's chest puffs out, almost daring. he assumes she doesn't know it, but mateo's done so many stupid things, this would just be a drop in his ocean. his reputation precedes him, but he's not been at his usual antics for long here in cider point, so he's still establishing himself amongst local legends like the rat at halloween. "it's great! tommy and kenji outdid themselves. I actually haven't had chance to see the birthday girl yet." she'd actually love it if margot drew a dick on his face, but he doesn't voice that, more curious now about whatever idea she'd had since.

"what happens when someone tells you no?" mateo asks with a wicked grin, no intention of ever uttering the word anyway. maybe withholding it, though, if the punishment is good enough. "you won't die on the ferris wheel, though, promise. they're, like, obnoxiously safe, actually, speaking from a structural and regulatory point of view." he hums, glancing past her at the bright lights around the wheel. "you're the biggest risk to yourself on those things, so as long as you don't try to jump out when we get to the top, you'll be fine."

his willingness to buy her food isn't her favourite thing about jason, but it's certainly up there. "thank youuuu!" she sings, grin wide as she immediately drops the water bottle next to her to reach for a pinch of fries. "you're the best. you should lose your mind more often." teasing, she points a fry at him, eyebrow raised. "this thing is so cool. for a birthday party, too! I usually just go to grand royale." she laughs, cheeks a little warm.
