The color theory is about how the color yellow and the color purple were used in the show. Many people believed yellow was code for The One, whereas purple meant two characters were not good for each other. Case in point: the yellow umbrella (of course!), Robin wearing the yellow raincoat in Disaster Averted or her yellow shirt when she and Barney kissed and took the leap in the season 4 finale, Barney’s yellow neck brace when it was revealed he was in love with Robin. On the contrary, purple was the color of the toy giraffe Ted was (metaphorically) supposed to let go of in episode two, and was also seen on Kevin, Quinn and Victoria (here’s a gifset!). Also, they wore a lot of purple in No Pressure, the episode where Robin tells Ted she is not in love with him, and Ted and Tracy were both wearing purple in Vesuvius, when they first hinted Tracy was sick (purple = bad!).
