Additional details : Back to well-debated objective claims during modern times, images finally succeded in revealing and being valued as proof - because, if not mere reproduction of reality, it still has a charge of veracity concerning the reality that most of humans share.
Images are usefull to show up an image out of non-visible state, it's powerful as a media that as it's ability to penatrate through the mind of the observer (fun enough to mention the now outdated magic bullet theory rooted in 30's behaviorism) and to be encapsulaed with non-tangible elements such as time and space that turns out to be quantified as observable informations.

Additional details : Luminet warns in his article that the image is not realistic yet, in 1979. Yet, his future simulation was very close to his expectations. To be considered as such he'd have to take the dopler effect and Schwarzschild metric into account.

The image shows the smaller lobe of the comet in the lower left corner, and the larger lobe to the upper right. The smaller lobe is actually in the foreground, and its rotation over the time elapsed between the first and the fourth frame is significant, making the mosaic particularly tricky.
The intricate patterns of pits and other roundish, hollow features on the larger of the comet's lobes stand out beautifully in this view, along with a number of boulders, particularly on the smaller lobe and across the neck."

That was back in 2003-2004 when computing and networking technology were very limited, compared to what is possible today."
About the generated image : it's indexed and refers itself to a subset of signs (here IPv4 addresses : the protocole in the network layer in charges of the traffic) which are quantifiable. It's also iconic, because it represents a scale-free network (the image denotes the network, namely a relational system). The symbolic layer may make us thinking to a rhizomatic form, and to his propagation through time and space.

It turns out that there is a straightforward way to approach this. Zhang and co consider each piece of glitter to be a randomly oriented micromirror. So light from the picture hits a micromirror and is reflected to a sensor inside the camera.
That means there is a simple mapping from each pixel in the original picture to a sensor in the camera. The task is to determine that mapping for every pixel. “There exists a forward scrambling matrix, and in principle we can find its inverse and unscramble the image,” they say.
To find this unscrambling matrix, Zhang and co shine a set of test images at the glitter screen and record where the pixels in the original image end up in the camera.
From this, they can create an algorithm that unscrambles any other image placed in exactly the same spot as the test images. They call this algorithm SparkleVision."
