Additionnal details : "This project was originally created to generate a picture (or map) of the Internet using a single computer and a single Internet connection to determine the relationship between every routable network on the Internet – in 24 hours. That was back in 2003-2004 when computing and networking technology were very limited, compared to what is possible today."
About the generated image : it's indexed and refers itself to a subset of signs (here IPv4 addresses : the protocole in the network layer in charges of the traffic) which are quantifiable. It's also iconic, because it represents a scale-free network (the image denotes the network, namely a relational system). The symbolic layer may make us thinking to a rhizomatic form, and to his propagation through time and space.Â

Cosmic connections
Human interconnectedness virtual or not is beautifully cosmic. The Opte Project is an endeavor started by Barrett Lyon in 2003 to create publicly available visualizations of the web. Simply amazing.. Click on the images to get to the high-resolution version.
