Jughead is aro and ace
An anon article about aro erasure in and out of the ace community
you know, iâve seen a fair few aces, and people in the comments sectiton of the few articles that reported about jugehead not being ace in riverdale, say that him having romances w women doesnât mean heâs not ace. but this rubs me the wrong way bc 1. they explicitly want to make him not asexual, and straight instead. Cole explicitly denotes the execs fought him and denied him the possibility of playing an ace character. not that they would play around with who he dates or that heâd be a sex positive or neutral ace, but that he will explicitly not be ace in season 1. the word asexual will not be mentioned. he will not be played that way. jugheadâs canon sexuality will be erased
2. though not explicitly stated, jughead in the comics has stated over and over that heâs not into girls âlike thatâ (romantically) and has been shown to be touch adverse. most of the comments in the article section read âsee!! he can date and have sex! aces are normal too, we can experience romantic attraction!â and as an aroace, that makes me feel like shit. people need to stop throwing aros under the bus in order to make themselves seem more 'normalâ to the straights (or other queer people, too).
3. this is already explicit in canon. he explicitly mentions being asexual. as for being romantically into girls- he doesnât like to go on dates with girls, is 'not into girls like thatâ, is not shown wanting to date anyone of any gender, explicitly states that he does not want to be with a girl romantically, but as a friend, gets uncomfortable when put in situations where romance or sex are expected of him, literally chooses to marry his sword in a video game to avoid marrying another person, and seems frantic and deeply uncomfortable when touched, especially when the person in question seems romantically and/or sexually attracted to him.
we have NO REP. we are invisible. this invisibility is what caused me to be denied medical care, because i needed to fix myself first. ditto with therapy. because no one knows what it is, just that youâre wrong and evil and inhuman and need to be made normal. you know what an aroace character would mean to people? even to professionals who see it and know itâs not an illness they need to fix? to young people who realize theyâre not abnormal and broken and gross? but can be real and whole and complete? to people who donât even know it exists? much less that itâs valid? or that you can lead a fulfilling life as an aroace?
iâm not here for the 'his romances with women donât mean heâs not aceâ!! because riverdale CLEARLY doesnât want to portray his sexuality as ace at all, or even touch on him being aro. And sure, if he were an aroace who loved to date, iâd LOVE to see that portrayed too. but he isnât. if he were an aroace that enjoyed sex iâd LOVE to see that portrayed too, but he doesnât. all i want is an explicitly aroace character. i wouldnât care if he dated or had sex, so long as the rep was there. because aces and aros come in literally a myriad of experiences, and dating (whether qprs or romantic partners) and sex can be part of many aroace experiences. but clearly not his at this time. Heâs aro and ace, dislikes dating, and doesnât like to be touched. and theyâre making him straight. and having him be straight is erasing a queer and marginalized orientation and it should be treated as such. (sorry, too long for an ask and needed to vent. opinions welcome. iâm just tired of people being like 'but not all aces are aro!! weâre attracted to people, too!!â especially when it comes to aces in comment sections seeking to make themselves seem more 'normalâ by throwing aros under the bus. as if romance is their redemption. if thatâs the case, whatâs left for me? whatâs left for all the aroaces? and whatâs left for all the aroaces who DONâT want to date because of their lack of attraction to people, or repulsion, or both? who donât want to have sex? where does that leave us? invalidated and erased by society. we have a chance of having some representation, which could have REAL LIFE consequences. like maybe an ace goes to the doc for a hormonal problem, like me, and the doctor doesnât decide to not treat them until they treat their disease (sexuality), and instead does, in an informed and professional manner. or their therapist doesnât want to forcibly convert them by showing them pictures of 'straight sexâ, humiliating them and forcing them to accept they have to be either gay or straight, that change can and will come if they tried hard enough. those are real life experiences i had and rep couldâve changed that. stop trying to normalize them making him straight)
