I had a dream last night that I had invited a lot of people including a lot of executive leadership for some sort of training meeting, but due to one of those nightmarish video-call-won’t-work-for-some-reason anxiety-dream things, was late logging in. (In the dream, logging in created a portal that transported you to a reserved physical meeting space.) However, when I physically entered the meeting, it was into a bizarre situation where a director was already chairing, thanking everyone for attending, thanking someone else for setting it all up, and handing over to an external trainer.
Disoriented, I realised that someone else had stolen my meeting, taking advantage of the fact that I’d gotten so many directors etc. into the same room, and had spent time and resources arranging a desirable room and portal-setup. Bewildered, pained, and in anxiety-dream logic unsure of what MY own meeting had actually been for, I sat down to take the training. There had been pre-reading (I hadn’t done it) and we were supposed to bring in a piece of work (I hadn’t.)
“This,” I said, “is like one of those dreams!” And in realising that I had simply aged out of the forgot-about-an-exam dream, and my shock at realising that I had simply created the professional equivalent, I stood up to leave. This caused everyone else to realise that it was a dream. They became cross with me for saying this, as this realisation destroyed the linkages to the hybrid-working portals! Now they would have to get back to their homes physically, by public transport!
Because I had booked the meeting - IT WAS MY MEETING!! THE MEETING RECOGNISED ME AS CHAIR!! - I simply picked up my laptop and left 😌
So if you’re still having school-anxiety dreams, take heart! They may… evolve ?
the poster that this incredible illustration is based on is extremely striking. but while searching for it, I also found earlier posters for conveying this message along with a corresponding one for summer, and I fucking love them. absolutely lovely graphic design work. (both are from 1924, artist is Austin Cooper)
the one I was looking for originally also has a summer variant. (artist is Frederick Charles Herrick: 'it is warmer below' is from 1927, 'it is cooler below' is 1926)
I love these posters. Do you know what I also love? Every person from London who's ever taken the Underground in a heatwave* in the notes currently going 'it's cooler below MY ARSE'.
(*or in summer, or even when it's just mildly sunny outside)
So like. It genuinely used to be. The earth around the tunnels used to be a pretty constant 14 degrees year round, because it had too much thermal mass to heat up or cool down within one summer/winter. But since the early days of the system it's been slowly, continually warming as it absorbed the waste heat from the trains. Now the dirt around some tunnels is as much as 26°.
They're still trying to figure out how the fuck to cool down The Entire Ground, because given another half century or so of operation it's going to go from sweaty and gross to "you genuinely can't operate a train in these conditions."

I also like Edward McKnight Kauffer’s London Underground posters, the 1923 Natural History Museum one is such cool piece of visual art

Oh I think I deleted it by accident..
My meme-ish poster about executive dysfunction, or "The Sits" as we call it in our house. This is to share my experiences with exec. dysfunction, everyone's a little different ☺️
one of the hardest things to learn as a depressed former Gifted Kid™ is that half-assed is better than nothing. take the 50%, 40%, even 20% job. scrubbing your face is better than not taking a shower at all. picking up your clothes is better than never cleaning. nibbling on some bread is better than starving.
DO THINGS HALFWAY. NOW YOU’RE 100% BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE BEFORE.
One of my college professors used to say “anything worth doing is worth doing poorly.” I didn’t understand that for years because I didn’t do anything poorly, I couldn’t do anything poorly, I had to Do Everything Perfectly.
But brushing your teeth for 30 seconds is better than not brushing them at all when that 2 minutes seems exhausting. Doing ten minutes of yoga is better than 10 minutes of sitting when 30 minutes of cardio sounds impossible. Changing my clothes is good when a whole shower is impossible. Standing on the porch for a few minutes is worth it after being in the house for three straight days because I don’t have the energy to go anywhere.
Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly… because doing it poorly is better than not doing it.
someone please hit me over the head with this post every day for like the next week thanks. a mention, a reblog with text, a message, something.
You must understand that perfectionism isn’t striving for excellence, it’s a crippling fear of being flawed and therefore worth abandonment or punishment. It’s a kind of psychological avoidance. You’re avoiding fear and failure , not embracing the thing you want to do bc if it was about the thing you want to do you’d be fine with partial victory.

it really is quite bad for your military to have an image of itself as a warrior class. what you really want is for your soldiers to think of themselves as boring professionals who will fill out a report form if someone gets a little too warrior ethos out there
Amanda Fix as Jules Orphan Black: Echoes | 1x01
Y'all for real please do these. Even if you're certain your posture doesn't suck. One day you will wake up with impinged shoulder pain like I did and let me tell you it fucking HURTS. Do these exercises even just once a week and it will make such a difference. Especially my fellow creatives out there, stop shrimping over your work and go do these right now. RIGHT NOW.
Also, if you’re even a little concerned about getting a hump or having trouble standing fully upright in your old age, this is how you prevent that. If you want to be up and about when you’re old you have to start when you’re younger. And keep in mind there is no bad time to start and it’s never too late. Starting today is way better than never starting at all.
What would it be like if Star Wars characters played DnD?
it would go about as well as you'd expect

why do americans think everyone on the internet lives in the same place as them. just saw someone say honeybees are "not native". not native to where????? the entire planet?????
saw a photo of garlic mustard somewhere on the internet once and americans in the comments were like "fun fact this plant is invasive so you should definitely tear out any you see, WITH THE ROOTS so it won't spread!" whole fucking time i'm living in garlic mustard native range. i don't think i will be doing that.
This drives me absolutely up the wall in r/birdfeeding. Every time there's a picture of a house sparrow, the entire comments are filled with americans talking about them being invasive and how they should be basically killed on sight. But often OP has not provided a location, and house sparrows have a HUGE native range. Here in the UK they're not only native birds, they're on the decline, they need our help and protection.
Me every time I see a post saying that you should destroy your lawn and cram a bunch of native plants as closely together as you can instead. Look, I'm not saying lawns are native to Australia because they're not, but our native plants evolved to burn; they are dry, their leaves are dry, and they're full of oils. If you plant native plants the way Americans tell you to that's a fucking fire hazard and you are endangering yourself and your neighbours next time we have a Black Summer.
My friend @ryttu3k linked me a great PDF on planting a native Australian garden in such a way as to reduce its status as a fire hazard!
tapping onto this, Ry's guide is for a specific part of NSW. Australia is a very very big place and there is a lot of biodiversity. So don't take one guide as The One True Guide because I used to be a ranger and lemme tell you, trying to stuff native plants in terrains they are unsuited for just creates a mess for everyone. Honestly, just google "native planting <your council> " and they will have a guide that is specific to your area.
