Del Toro has genuine respect for the source material. It isn’t supposed to be a scene by scene replication of the book — it is his love letter to it. It shines through in the reworking of the original dialogue, the costuming, the meticulous attention to detail. Del Toro has the skill to pull something of this magnitude off and make it his own. The love he has for the story of Frankenstein is palpable in every single frame.

Nobody working on Frankenstein has ever referred to Mary Shelley’s work as “just a book”, unlike the casting director of Wuthering Heights. Frankenstein is a carefully crafted masterpiece. Wuthering Heights is a means for Emerald Fennell to make a quick buck by turning a classic into an edgy, poorly casted and hastily put together pantomime that harbours no love for the story from which it draws its inspiration.
