So, you’re writing a thing, and you need to name a character. And, as we all know, naming a character is a giant pain in the ass. I offer this list of shit I use pretty regularly, for this purpose.

Behind the Name (The etymologies are weird as fuck, in a few places, but it’s great if you’ve got a name and need to find other names that are from or derived from the same culture/language)

Warsworn are massive undead creatures whose forms are composed of dozens of corpses of soldiers from battles long past, their armor and shields still making up the creature’s body, rolling over one another as it slithers about. Sometimes created on purpose, other times arising spontaneously, warsworn grow larger as they assimilate more corpses into their forms, adding victims to their enormous bulk. They will fling balls of crumpled metal from the armor and shields within them at foes, and possess the magical ability to take control of suits of armor, flinging them and those wearing them about. A warsworn stands around 25 feet tall and weighs several tons. After it is destroyed, armor can be salvaged from its corpse: 1d4-1 suits of plate, 2d4 suits of half plate, 2d6 suits of split, and 2d8 breastplates, as well as 3d6 shields.

Stepping into this establishment, it becomes quickly apparent how it earned its seedy reputation. Apart from the copious mugs of ale covering the sticky tabletops and shadowy figures with fistfuls of playing cards, a crack splits the air. You turn your head, thinking to find a broken chair, or a shattered bottle of wine, but instead the sound seems to have issued from the skull of some poor lout being dragged out of the ring, slumped and unconscious. You’ve heard of tavern brawls before, but this appears to be the only one specifically designed for such a purpose…

Many of you know already of my fondness for 2minutetabletop and his gorgeous selection of maps. Awhile back, he posted the Typical Tavern map and I loved the style so much that I spent a few hours working on brushes and things to make a map inspired by it. So, this is the result. I hope you find a nice use for it in your tavern brawls!

Fomitopsis betulina

This common bracket fungus, the birch polypore or razor strop, is widespread throughout the northern hemisphere and the main cause of brown rot on birch (Betula sp.) trees. It is well known due to its long history of traditional uses and pieces of it were found among the belongings of Ötzi the Iceman, a mummified man who lived over 5000 years ago and was found in the Alps between Italy and Austria in 1991. The birch polypore is edible when young, but it has mostly been used for its medicinal value, supported by modern pharmacological research which has highlighted a wealth of possible further uses. From wound dressing to brewing as tea, its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and analgesic properties made it a valuable species in the folk medical practices of Europe from antiquity up until modern times. Maybe less importantly, it has also been used to refine the sharp edge of razors, which gave it the common name ‘razor strop’.  

Once there was a deity of love who’s name has been forgotten with the passage of time. Their heart was filled with endless love and they fell for a mortal emperor of a powerful nation. With the deity’s blessing the nation blossomed into one that was unrivaled by any other. However the mortals soon grew greedy and seeked even more. Frightened by the greed that overtook those they had loved, the deity fled but was relentlessly pursued. 

 Mercilessly slaughtered, the deity was left in the cold snow their blood painting the snow red. With a dying breath, the deity ripped out their own heart and placed a vengeful curse. The heart grew thorns and over time became a rose. With dark magic imbued in the rose, the once proud nation was destroyed by a garden of thorns. Now you possess this rose and the only question is, are you prepared for the sacrifice? 

 Wondrous Item, Legendary/One of a kind, Requires attunement

Once you have attuned to this item you can select one of the following curses to inflict. However the rose will exact payment by blood. If you select a curse you are immediately killed and can only be resurrected if someone else will take your place. 

Curses:

Shared Fate- Whisper the names of up to five creatures to the rose. Once you are killed so will they and they cannot be resurrected by any means.

Tragic Luck- Give this rose to another creature and this rose binds to their flesh. All of this creature’s rolls are treated as a Nat 1.

Cursed Garden- Stab the rose into your heart and let the thorns consume you. The thorns will then seek the ground and once they have entered the ground the surrounding radius of up to a mile is covered by thorns. 

This is treated as difficult terrain and for every 1 feet travelled in the garden a creature takes 10d10 magical piercing damage. The garden persists for years equal to the maximum lifespan of your race.
