The rule could have heavy impacts towards trans people across society.
Last week, the Trump administration quietly released a sweeping new federal rule that would use funding threats to force institutions across the country to reject transgender people. The 400-page proposed regulation would codify the administration's anti-trans executive orders into binding federal policy, imposing a blanket prohibition on federal funds going toward "gender ideology"
The proposed rule, formally titled "Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance," rewrites the government-wide framework governing all federal grants across every agency. Among its most consequential provisions, it requires that before a federal grant recipient can receive money, the award must pass a "pre-issuance review" conducted by a political appointee—not a career expert or peer reviewer—to ensure it is "consistent with applicable law, Federal agency priorities, and the national interest." The regulation explicitly instructs these appointees to screen for "denial by the recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic." [...] An institution that acknowledges transgender people exist—through its policies, its training, its healthcare, its bathroom access, its HR procedures, its name-change processes—could be deemed to "deny the sex binary" or to “support the notion that sex is mutable” and have its federal funding blocked.
Importantly, the gender ideology prohibition has no age limitation—hospitals could be targeted not just for providing care to minors but for providing gender-affirming care to adults, because prescribing hormone therapy to a transgender patient of any age could be deemed promoting the belief that "sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic."
THIS IS OPEN TO COMMENT UNTIL JULY 13, 2026
This is all very bad and horrible, but I want to be clear that it’s worse and more sweeping than just eliminating trans research.
This torches everything. And I do mean everything.
A very abbreviated list of its ramifications include (but are not limited to):
ending funding for ALL DEI related initiatives
allowing the government to terminate grants at any point for any reason
preventing researchers from publishing, going to conferences, and being part of academic societies
requiring that topics must support the president’s agenda.
What this means, and if anything I’m under selling it, is the death of science and research in America. It allows the government to restrict any topic they please at a whims notice, putting officials who have no background in the topic in charge of deciding funding continuity. It controls what gets researched and if/how researchers are allowed to share their discoveries. There are no books to burn if the government never allows them to be written. This is fascism plain and simple.
Please, if you only ever write one public comment, this is the one to do.
Bringing back this guide to writing an effective public comment. This gives you the basics you need to know, what you need to include, a basic outline you can follow, etc.
Public comments are not a vote, it is a chance for you to say "here is an issue with this law I think you need to address" and provide justification for legal challenges if it goes forward:
"Comments raise the bar that agencies have to meet when making a rule; “if an agency fails to adequately respond to significant, relevant comments in a final rule, members of the public may seek to challenge the rule in court on that basis and claim it could be struck down.ˮ"
But also, if possible, don't stop at writing a comment. Don't stop at calling your representatives. You should ideally be talking to people in your community about this and organizing resistance on-the-ground; there is a good chance people are already doing that even if you aren't hearing about it.
Some added 101-level context from someone (me) who’s worked in federal grantmaking for 20 years and is literally certified on this document - this is a document that governs all federal grantmaking. It’s been around for over a decade and is a mega-document that combine multiple previous smaller documents that have been around for ages. It is updated every few years and generally the updates are minor - a notable change in the previous update was raising the small procurement threshold from $10,000 to $15,000 for example. Deeply dry boring minutiae that no one outside of federal grantmakers need concern themselves with. It was also federal GUIDELINES, which means there was flexibility.
This year’s is different. They are now federal REQUIREMENTS, which means there’s no flexibility. As was said previously, the 400 pages are not singularly devoted to being absolute shitheads to trans people. Theres a lot of stuff in there, some of which is the standard dry boring grants stuff, some of which is the horrible ideological warfare outlined above.
This document is issued by the OMB, the Office of Management and Budget, which is currently lead by fucking Russell Vought, the principal architect of Project 2025. This is how they’re going to implement all the horrible shit in there that wasn’t covered by Executive Order. Russell Vought is actively coming for my job, my marriage, and my kid, and most of my friends lost their jobs last year because of him. He is the fucking arch villain behind the heinous shit the current regime is doing.
So yes, please comment. You don’t have to read all 400 pages before doing so, it’s dry and dense as fuck, but I thought this information might be helpful. Also, while there is a public comment period, this isn’t voted on by Congress. The OMB just fucking issues it. Pressuring your elected officials into publicly saying “hey what the fuck are you doing here” is good, though.
Please note the comment period is open through JULY 13th, not JUNE 13th. I saw a lot of relogs yesterday saying "last day!" and I just want to say it is very much not too late.
As of today, 7/8/26, we have five days for public commentary on this to go through. I am begging y'all: if you care about independent science in the country that produces the most global science funding in the world, please leave a comment.
Shoutout to my favorite genre of TOS episode:
…I can’t think how it took me so long to run across this. I feel privileged to have been found by it. 😄

I am so tired of short-attention-span, trim-the-fat culture. All writing advice these days is for how to write like Chuck Palahniuk. "Cut 'think', cut 'feel', cut 'wonder' - only action, only pushing forward, show and move and move and move." What if I could emulate this style, and still don't want to? What if I want to write like Henry James, with three paragraphs of introspective musings between each dialogue line? The music advice is, "make it shortform, make it Tik-Tok compatible, make it punchy, hit the refrain as soon as possible." What if I want that 10-minute prog rock piece? What if I want that symphony? What if I want it slow and luxurious and lazy? Movies. Series. Poetry. Bodies. Everything is "trimmed trimmed trimmed trimmed, stripped bare, you have three seconds to win me over, make it airport chic." I don't want to win you over, then, I guess. I want the fat left it. I want the pleasure and the indolence and the indulgence. Fuck this art-advice that's always "your art needs Ozempic."

Being asexual and racist is embarassing as fuck. Being racist at all is obviously embarassing as fuck but the amount of racism and especially antiblackness i have been seeing from asexuals recently is obscene.
One of the only asexual activists is Yasmin Benoit, a Black woman. She has raised so much awareness for the community. She was the first asexual person to lead Pride in London, she started the #thisiswhatasexuallookslike movement and is THE leading voice for the community.
And you all will celebrate international asexuality day on April 6th but we wouldn't even have that if she hadn't cofounded it.
Edit: why are you all too scared to repost this. Cmon. Be vocal about being against racism
Considering how bad the rise of skywalker turned out and how we now know Disney had no long term plan, I guess it’s fair to say those “toxic” fans might have had a point? Look at the low ratings for the shows on Disney plus and the lackluster box office for mandalorian. Maybe “toxic” fans were trying to avoid this?
Apologies up front, Linkara. I'm hijacking this because I need to rant for a moment.
"Disney has no plan!" Neither did George Lucas. "The shows/books/games/latest movie suck(s)!" You've been saying that since the Special Editions released in the 90s. I know. I've been listening to your barrage of perpetually negative bullshit for roughly three quarters of my fucking life at this point. "If they just listened to us-" They did, it's how we got the version of Rise of Skywalker that's a serial-numbers-filed-off, half-assed version of the forgettable Dark Empire comics.
I can say the exact same thing to the Star Trek "fandom". Y'all have been bitching non-stop since the casting announcements for TNG. And it's almost word for word the same stupid "They changed it now it sucks" sets of arguments the Star Wars
Maybe, just fucking maybe, the problem isn't the shows, the books, the games, the folks making it. Maybe the problem is you, the fan, acting like an entitled, spoilt child who needs things their way and only their way and throws an even bigger tantrum when the companies try to give you what you say you want. I was the same way, once. I was part of the push for Bioware to change Mass Effect 3's ending. 13 years on, I'm happy to admit I'm fucking ashamed I was part of that effort because it did so much to encourage the insufferable, entitled shit in fandoms online today.
So let me share with you the epiphany I've had:
The problem isn't the piece of media. The problem is your own unwillingness to engage with it on terms other than your own, and to be open-minded enough to accept it for what it is, flaws and all.
"That’s what makes Zohran Mamdani’s election in New York so unsettling to the old order. New York City is not just another municipality; it’s a sovereign-scale entity. Its population surpasses 38 states. Its metropolitan GDP trails only Texas and California.
It is, by any metric, a small country masquerading as a city.
It governs more lives and more wealth than most nations. If democratic socialism — housing reform, public banking, equitable taxation — functions here, it obliterates the myth that such governance can’t work at scale. The fear isn’t ideological. It’s empirical. Because if Mamdani can keep the lights on, reduce homelessness, and maintain economic growth without catering to Wall Street, then the capitalist gospel collapses under its own dead weight.
What terrifies the establishment isn’t failure. It’s feasibility.
If it works in New York, there’s no reason it can’t work in Nebraska. If it works in Queens, it can work in Kansas City. And once proof exists, belief becomes irrelevant. The ship of democracy, fully refitted, will keep sailing — and no one can claim it isn’t American."

you need to understand I'm a former Horse Girl when i say this. i think the 40k death riders of kreig are stupid.
Historical-like cavalry in a futuristic setting with automatic weapons and tanks is stupid anyway, for the same reasons cavalry mostly went away in our real world. There are extremely niche modern military uses for horses but they don't make sense for most of the confrontations that happen in 40k.
the death riders to me seem like really wanting the 'role' of cavalry for style (that is pretty much nonexistent post-WW1) while absolutely hating horses. Their relative fragility, how they look, how after their military use is over they're often associated with women, stuff like that. The mount critters REEK of a fear of 'pretty pretty pony' and have removed all features that invoke 'pretty pretty pony' under the guise of cutting logistical inconveniences.
Except the resulting creature is worthless. I am sorry to tell you that a horse's coat of hair was pretty much the only thing making them semi-resistant to irritating gas weapons. The hooves are able to be shod and thus become resistant to being worn down by sharp terrain; giving them Claws won't help. And it fucks up their stride such that now they wouldn't be able to do what you want horses to do.
The lore about them being able to be freeze-dried is dumb too, because the only advantage of horses is that they're able to go fast without gasoline. Eliminating the logistical drawbacks of taking care of the horses (via axing all those Pretty Pretty Pony Features) also eliminates the entire tradeoff that explains why you might choose horses in the first place.
A lot of things in Warhammer 40k feel like they were made-up by a gushing dweeb who does not know what he's talking about but this is one of the worst. A wargame is about war which is primarily about logistics, and if you want horses you need the logistics for horses. It does not make your Kreig faction look more hardcore and stylish, it makes them look insecure and like they need special excuses to function. Just put that gas mask on a normal horse. They'll do no worse at catching machine gun fire, I promise.
the only probable result of all of this though is that I'll just invent a deeply dysfunctional kriegsman who is failing his suicide oath thing because he likes caring for the abomination ponies too much.
So, Games Workshop isn't against the concept of 'pretty pretty ponies'. Normal horses are a possible mount selection for Rough Rider (among many others; Attilan regiments in particular favor horses), and the current Lord Commander of Segmentum Solar rides a (now cyborg) horse named Konstantin who has long shared its rider's sensibilities towards things like "hostile environments", "combat injuries" and "old age". (Lord Commander Solar Leontus is a former rough rider; Konstantin has been the man's mount for a century at least.) Imperial transports have stables and training areas on them specifically for rough riders and their mounts. The logistics trains for live animals exist. Krieg is just weird.
