now I’m NOT saying he should have had a partner on earth or whatever because I do think it’s awesome that he’s (implicitly at least) aro/ace/both, but it would have been a great aside to see the cloud of yearning that follows him everywhere which he either has to deal with or has decided to be permanently ignorant of. like the comedy potential of objectively the most fuckable man any of these strange science geeks have ever met being like oh um :) thanks for the coffee and the flowers and stuff and you guys are all so nice to me it’s great to work with you all :)

On the other hand, the others wanted to give their lives to save the world, and they did. Dubois’ death propelled Grace into the mission — possibly the only person who would have reacted to Rocky like that, securing their success. His (book canon) huge stash of nitrogen saved the astrophage Grace needed to complete the mission. Yao and Ilyukhina’s deaths gave Grace the urgency to try as hard as he did to make it to Tau Ceti and so to Rocky, and left him enough coma slurry to survive the crises ahead. And Grace being forced into the mission saved his life in the end and returned him to what he’d been longing for all along, a quiet life with friends and fog over the beach and little ones to give his love of science to.
