following this pattern of projection, the sibling truthing is on one of their parts only. ivan is primarily driven to pursue a connection with sua after seeing himself reflected in her. whether she truly embodies these values is not relevant, rather, she becomes a symbol of what could be. he searches for comfort in her, via trying to find kinship and understanding he has never once experienced.

it only turns into envy and resentment when ivan realises their differences, finally seeing the parts of sua he had ignored for his own sake: sua is loved, ivan is not (to his knowledge). only then he lashes out at the parts of himself he sees in sua, hating the symbol he's turned her into instead of attaching himself to it. he thereby distances himself from these traits, offloading the emotional toll of hating himself by using sua as proxy. ironically, he finally resents the part of himself that would rather run than face the day.
