The Doctor is a shell-shocked being stuck in, what appears to be, a vicious cycle of loss.

After months of traveling the universe with sadness as his sole companion, he happens upon a precious Southern Belle named Martha Jones who's found herself at Royal Hope London circa 1987, becoming one of the hospital's first black junior physicians. A pleasant surprise find the unlikely pair traversing not only the universe together, but the muddy waters of emotional co-dependence and grief while trying to figure out who they, themselves, actually are.

martha, however, despite being quick on her feet and slick at the mouth, has an auto-immune disease that limits her in more ways than one (medical advances at the time limiting her ability to some degree and also causing some irreparable damage to some extent) but is determined not to let that stop her from seeing the stars and becoming an absolute beast of a doctor to the best of her potential.
