By Friday, Nadia’s body had stopped being a body and become a list of complaints.
Her neck on the left. The knot under her right shoulder blade that had been there since March. Her lower back, which had developed opinions. Eleven-hour days for three weeks running, a launch that kept not launching, and a boss who said circle back the way other people breathed.
She found the place at eleven at night, scrolling with one eye closed. Small studio, four blocks from her apartment, decent reviews, no stock photos of orchids. She booked ninety minutes of deep tissue before she could talk herself into a cheaper sixty.
She was not looking for anything. She wants that on the record.
She was thirty-four years old and she wanted to be able to turn her head.
She was also, by the time Friday actually arrived, in a genuinely foul mood about it.
The week had ended the way the whole month had been going, which is to say badly and then slightly worse. A meeting that could have been an email and then an email that could have been nothing. Two hours rebuilding a deck because somebody upstream changed a number. Her mother calling twice. A parking ticket she didn’t deserve.
And now she was going to spend a hundred and forty dollars, because she’d checked and it was a hundred and forty with tip, on a stranger touching her shoulders for an hour and a half.
This isn’t going to work.
That was the thought she carried into the parking lot with her, sitting in the car with the engine off, feeling the specific sourness of a person about to be disappointed on purpose.
Because she’d done this before. Twice. Both times she’d walked out feeling exactly the same as when she’d walked in, except lighter in the wallet and slightly greasy, having spent ninety minutes being politely petted by someone who was clearly thinking about something else. Both times she’d tipped twenty percent anyway, because she was constitutionally incapable of not doing that, and both times she’d sat in her car afterward feeling stupid.
It’ll be fine. It’ll be fine and pleasant and completely useless and then I’ll go home and it’ll be Friday night and I’ll be exactly this tired.
She went in anyway, because she’d already paid the deposit.
Eucalyptus and clean laundry. Warm lamps, no panpipe music, a woman at the desk who handed her a clipboard and didn’t make small talk.
Under pressure preference Nadia wrote DEEP. Genuinely. I’m not going to say ouch. and then felt like an idiot about it.
That’s going to make you sound difficult. You sound difficult.
Good. Be difficult. You’ve paid for difficult twice already and gotten a nice back rub.
The therapist knocked twice before coming in. Late thirties, forearms like a man who did this eight hours a day, a voice pitched low without being performative about it.
“Nadia? I’m Tomas.” He glanced at the clipboard. “You wrote a paragraph under pressure preference.”
“I’ve had bad experiences.”
“People were too gentle with you.”
“I paid ninety dollars to be petted.”
He laughed once, and it was real. Then he set the clipboard down and said the thing he said to everybody, in the flat tone of a man who has said it four thousand times.
“Standard stuff. Undress to whatever level you’re comfortable with, most people go fully undressed, you’ll be draped the entire time and I only uncover the part I’m working on. Face down to start, head in the cradle, there’s a bolster for under your ankles.” He was already rolling his sleeves. “Anything hurts, anything’s too much, anything you don’t want, you say stop and I stop. Immediately, no discussion, no explanation owed. That word works at any point in the next ninety minutes. That’s the whole rulebook.”
“I’ll knock before I come back in. Take your time.”
She would think about that later. How simple he’d made it. One word, no explanation owed, available for ninety minutes.
She would think a lot about the fact that she never used it.
She undressed alone in the warm little room. Blouse over the chair. Slacks folded on the seat. Bra, and then, after a beat of deliberation she’d revisit many times in the following weeks, her underwear too, because that was what the sheet was for and she wasn’t going to be the woman who left her underwear on.
The table was warmed. She hadn’t expected that. She slid under the top sheet face-down, wriggled until her hips were centered, got her face into the cradle, and lay there naked under one layer of cotton with nothing between her and the room but fabric.
Normal. This is normal. This is how massages work.
That was the first data point and it arrived immediately, when he settled both palms flat on her upper back through the sheet, just resting, letting her feel the weight of them before anything else happened. They spanned most of her back. She could feel the whole span of each one, heel to fingertip, warmer than the room, dry, with a faint rasp at the base of the fingers, the calluses of a man who did this all day every day.
Her first thought was that a hand that size could cover almost anything.
Her second thought was that she did not need to be having her first thought.
He didn’t move for about ten seconds. Just held that weight on her, and it did something specific, the way a heavy blanket does, her whole nervous system reading pinned and deciding that meant safe.
Nadia felt her shoulders drop an inch before she’d consented to it.
Oh, this one’s different.
She hadn’t expected to be able to tell that fast. But she could, immediately, from ten seconds of a man not doing anything at all. The other two had started touching her the second they walked in, chatty and light and already somewhere else. This one had put his hands down and waited.
That was the whole difference and it landed harder than she was ready for. Somebody in this room was actually paying attention to her body. Not performing it. Not running a routine over her while thinking about lunch. Somebody was standing there with his hands on her back reading what was underneath them, and Nadia felt the sour knot of the entire week loosen half a turn purely from being noticed.
Okay, she thought, and the sourness went out of her all at once, and she was slightly embarrassed by how much she’d needed that. Okay. Fine. Maybe this was worth a hundred and forty dollars.
“Okay,” he said. “Breathe out.”
He folded the sheet down to her waist, tucked it, and she felt the air on her bare back, and then she felt oil, warmed in his palms first, going on in long slow strokes from her lower back all the way up to her shoulders and out across the tops of her arms.
Effleurage. She knew the word from somewhere. Long gliding passes, no digging yet, just his hands mapping her, coming up either side of her spine and fanning out over her shoulder blades and back down. Over and over. Slow enough that it stopped registering as technique and became something closer to weather.
By the fourth pass she’d stopped tracking where his hands were going.
By the eighth she had goosebumps everywhere, the good kind, rolling up her arms in waves every time he came back up her spine.
Then he started actually working, and it stopped being pleasant and became something else.
He found the shoulder knot in ninety seconds. Went into it with the flat of his thumb first, then his elbow, and Nadia made a noise into the face cradle that she’d have been embarrassed about if she’d had any capacity left for it.
“That’s been there since March.”
“I believe you. Breathe out when I go in.”
It hurt in the way that means it’s working. He held the pressure and she breathed out and something that had been clenched for an entire fiscal quarter let go all at once, and she felt the release travel, actually travel, down her arm and out through her fingers.
Oh my god, she thought, dimly. I’m going to have to marry this man.
He worked her whole back like that. Thumbs either side of the spine, walking down vertebra by vertebra. The heel of his hand into the thick muscle along her ribs. Forearm rolled slowly across the top of her shoulders, all his weight in it. Her arms went to putty first, then her upper back, then everything above her waist, and she lay there in a warm room with her face in a hole in a table feeling herself dismantled competently by a stranger.
The draping was the thing she kept noticing.
He was meticulous. Every time he moved he tucked and folded first, and never once was more of her uncovered than the part he was working on. When he moved to her legs the sheet came back over her upper body entirely and he uncovered one leg at a time, tucking the fabric snug under her hip and along her inner thigh, so the leg was bare and everything else was sealed away.
So professional it was almost clinical. It also meant that every twenty minutes some new part of her met the air, and her body kept registering that as an event, and by the time he’d worked up the back of one thigh she was paying attention to the draping in a way that had nothing to do with modesty.
And she had started wondering, in a small dishonest corner of her head, whether he looked.
Not leered. Nothing like that. Just whether, in the ordinary course of putting his hands on a naked woman for ninety minutes, his eyes ever went where his hands were going. Whether he’d looked at her ass when he folded the sheet. Whether he was looking right now.
Stop it. He is a professional. This is a medical service. You have a knot in your shoulder.
He drove his thumbs up the belly of her hamstring toward the crease of her thigh and she went warm from the hips down.
That’s fine. That’s just circulation.
He worked the second leg, and then he did something new.
“I’m going higher on this one. Glutes, hip flexors, psoas if you’ll let me at it. That’s where your back pain actually lives.” He was tucking as he spoke, folding the sheet up over her hip and pinning it down, exposing the whole back of her thigh and the lower curve of her ass. “Fair warning, this area’s strange. The psoas runs off the same nerves as your fight-or-flight response. You’ve been braced for three weeks, that muscle’s been holding the brace, and when it lets go, people react.”
“Shaking. Crying, sometimes. Laughing.” He said it the way you’d describe rain. “It’s not pain, it’s just the nervous system flipping over. Whatever comes up is normal and I’ve seen all of it.”
“Cool. Great. Love that for me.”
He laughed. “And one thing people find weird. When I press in, push back into my hands. Meet the pressure. Don’t go limp.”
“You’ve been guarding for weeks. Go passive and you just brace somewhere else and I chase it around all afternoon. Push into it and the muscle has to release.” His hand pressed, testing, heel-first into the meat of her glute. “Like that. Push.”
Something unlocked so completely she gasped into the cradle.
“There,” he said. “That’s the whole trick.”
Here is what nobody warns you about.
Deep hip work, done properly, is maybe thirty percent therapeutic and seventy percent an experience your nervous system has no filing system for.
He went in with the heel of his hand, then his forearm, then both thumbs stacked, pushing tissue laterally and holding, and each time she pushed back into him something gave way and let go. He worked the outside of her hip. He worked the crease underneath. He came in from the front, hand sliding beneath the fold of the sheet at her hip bone, finding the psoas from the outside and sinking in with a slow steady pressure that made her breath stop entirely.
Her breathing changed first. She noticed it distantly, the way you notice weather through a window. Her diaphragm had dropped somewhere lower in her body and she was pulling long slow lungfuls without deciding to. Three weeks of shallow chest-breathing simply stopped.
Then her legs started shaking. Not from strain. A fine involuntary tremor in both thighs, no ability to stop it, the thing he’d warned her about arriving right on schedule.
“There it goes,” he said, unbothered. “Normal. Let it happen.”
And that was when she noticed the second thing.
The sheet was not where it had been.
That was the fact she came back to first, when she went looking for what had changed. She’d shifted at some point, pushing back into his hands over and over, and her hips had come up off the table by degrees, and the tucked corner at her hip had worked loose, and she was fairly certain, without being able to see, that the drape was now covering considerably less of her than the protocol intended.
Wait. Wait. How much is showing right now?
Can he see everything? Is everything just out? Oh my god.
Her legs had fallen open. Not much. An inch, maybe two, the involuntary slack of a body that had finally stopped holding itself closed, which is exactly what he had been working for the last twenty minutes to achieve.
She could feel the air on the inside of her thighs.
Close your legs. Just close them a little. Just enough to be normal.
He hasn’t said anything. If it were a problem he’d fix the drape. He’s fixed the drape nine times. He is not fixing it.
Is he not fixing it on purpose?
Am I hoping he’s not fixing it on purpose?
And then the thought she really could not have, the one that arrived fully formed and made her stomach drop:
Is he looking at it right now?
He’s standing eighteen inches behind me. My legs are open. If he glanced down at any point in the last ten minutes he saw everything.
He’s probably seen it. He has definitely seen it.
She waited to feel horrified about that and the horror did not arrive on schedule. What arrived instead was heat, a whole wave of it, low and immediate, at the specific thought of a calm professional man standing behind her looking at her pussy while she pretended not to know.
Oh, that’s a problem. That’s a real problem, Nadia.
And underneath all of it, quieter: she did not close her legs.
Then she noticed the rest of it, all at once, the way you notice a sound that’s been going for an hour.
She was swollen. That was the word and she hated the word. Heavy and full and swollen, a low pulse in her keeping time with her heartbeat, and every time his hands came up the back of her thigh the pressure radiated forward and made the pulse worse.
And wet. Not damp. Wet enough to feel on the inside of her own thighs, slick where the oil ended and she began. The oil was not helping. The oil made every pass frictionless, nothing to slow anything down, no resistance anywhere.
Oh no, she thought, with total clarity. Oh no. Absolutely not. We are not doing this.
Because here is the mechanism nobody explains to you, and she’d learn its real name later, at two in the morning with her phone brightness turned all the way down: it’s the same wire. Relaxation and arousal run on the same nerve. The parasympathetic system that slows your heart and drops your shoulders and turns your breathing deep is the identical system that sends blood to your groin, and when it switches on it switches on for everything at once. Which is why people fall asleep on massage tables and also why people get hard on them, and why nobody who does this for a living finds either one remarkable.
Nadia did not know that yet.
All Nadia knew was that a large calm man with enormous warm hands had been working her body for an hour, telling her to push into him, saying good every time she did it right, and that her body, untouched by anybody in fourteen months, had drawn its own conclusions and acted on them without consulting her.
Did I shave. Wednesday. Is Wednesday recent enough. Can he see. Of course he can see. Oh god, can he smell it.
She pushed back and made a sound that was not a therapeutic sound.
That was the first thing. He didn’t stop, didn’t pause, didn’t ask if she was all right, didn’t do the small courteous thing a professional does when a client makes a noise. His hands kept moving in exactly the same rhythm, same pressure, same tempo, like the sound had simply not occurred.
And the not-stopping went through Nadia like current.
Because there were only two explanations. Either he hadn’t heard it, which was impossible in a room this small, or he had heard it and decided to keep going.
He heard that. He absolutely heard that. And he did not stop.
Which means we’re both just going to pretend. Which means we’ve agreed to something.
And underneath, so quiet she could pretend she hadn’t thought it: say stop.
The word was right there. Handed to her before they started. No explanation owed, available at any point in the next ninety minutes. All she had to do was open her mouth and say one syllable and everything in this room would end instantly.
That was the moment. She’d know it later, replaying it in her car, that everything after this was a thing she chose in a warm room with her face hidden by simply declining to say a word she’d been given for free.
The pressure had shifted. Same instruction, same voice, same professional evenness, and his hands were now working the crease where her thigh met her body, thumbs sinking in on either side, the heels of his palms spreading her open a fraction with every pass. Nothing about it was still a massage.
Holy fuck. His thumb is right there. That is not my hamstring, that is not anywhere near my hamstring.
Is that my lips? Is he touching my lips? That’s my lips.
Okay. Okay. Is this a technique? Is there a muscle there? There has to be a muscle there.
There is no muscle there, Nadia.
Stop, she thought. That’s all. One word.
Oh no. Oh no, I just did that. He said push back and I pushed back and now he knows.
He worked her like that for a long time, patient, deliberate, each pass a little higher and a little slower, and every single time he pressed she chose again. And again. And again. She could have ended it at any point. She elected not to at intervals of roughly four seconds, over and over, and told herself the entire time that she wasn’t deciding anything.
Is this normal? Do people do this? Does this happen?
Am I allowed to like this?
That was the deal she made with herself. She wasn’t doing this. It was being done. She was only failing to object, which is a completely different thing, and as long as she kept her face buried and never said a word out loud, it stayed that way.
Then his hands went to her hips.
“I need to change your position for this next part, and I want to flag something first.” His palms settled on either side of her pelvis, warm and still, not yet moving her. “It’s a vulnerable position. Most people feel that, and there’s nothing wrong with feeling it. It’s the only way to reach the front of the psoas with you face down, so it’s worth doing, but I’d rather you go into it knowing than end up in it and be surprised.”
He warned me. He actually warned me first.
“Okay. Rotate for me. Anterior tilt, so the hip flexors lengthen.” His thumbs pressed in above the crest of her pelvis, guiding rather than lifting. “Roll the front of your pelvis down toward the table. There you go. Now up, tailbone toward the ceiling. That’s it.”
She did what she was told, because that had been the arrangement for the last hour and because her body no longer required much convincing to do what his hands suggested.
It took two adjustments. He worked her torso into it in stages, one hand under her hip bone and the other flat between her shoulder blades, walking her pelvis into the tilt and then pressing her chest down into the table so her back arched and everything rotated backward.
“Widen your knees a few inches.”
“A little more. I know. Stay with me.”
And then she was in it, fully, and she understood exactly what position she was in.
Chest flat to the table. Hips lifted and rolled back, tailbone up. Knees apart. Everything she had tipped up and back and pointed directly at the man standing at the end of the table, with the sheet bunched somewhere uselessly around her lower back and not covering one single thing.
Oh my god. Oh my god, this is what I look like right now.
He put me here. He asked and I did it and now I’m just. Presented.
“That’s exactly right,” he said. “And I know how exposed that is. I want you comfortable in it, not just tolerating it. Are you okay?”
He’s checking. He is actually checking.
Say no and it stops. He’d fix the sheet and go back to your shoulders and never mention it again.
“You’re sure? It’s a real question, not a courtesy.”
“Good. If that changes at any point, tell me and we adjust or we stop. Either one, no cost to you.”
No cost, she thought, dazed. He said no cost.
Completely, obscenely open, hips tilted back and knees apart, everything she had on display in a warm bright room to a man whose last name she did not know.
And God, she could feel her pussy. That was the thing. She could feel it as its own separate object, swollen and heavy and hot, lips full and pushed apart by the tilt of her own hips, the air moving over all of it. She could feel how wet she was on the inside of her thighs. She could feel her own pulse there, a slow thick beat.
And he was looking at it. Not maybe. Not possibly. He was standing three feet behind her at the end of a table with a lamp on, and she was tilted up and spread open, and there was nowhere else for his eyes to be.
He’s looking at my pussy right now. He is standing there looking at it.
He can see how swollen I am. He can see how wet. That’s not something you hide, that’s not something you explain away as circulation.
She should have wanted to close. Every reasonable part of her filed that motion and every reasonable part of her got overruled, because what she actually felt, in her chest and her stomach and everywhere his eyes were, was a kind of terrible thrill.
Oh my god. I want him to be looking.
Is it normal though? He said people react. Maybe he’s seen this nine hundred times and thinks nothing of it.
He has definitely not seen this nine hundred times.
Or has he. Do women just do this?
This stopped being a professional massage a while ago and I did not say one word.
Or did it. Is it me? Am I the one making this sexual? Am I lying here sexualizing a man doing his actual job?
He has his hands four inches from my pussy and I tilted it toward him when he asked.
Fuck. Fuck, I’m loving this.
Am I allowed to be loving this?
She had that entire conversation with herself in about nine seconds, reached no conclusion at all, and did not close her legs.
“Can I make an observation,” he said.
Not a question, exactly. He’d stopped working. Both hands rested on the backs of her thighs, still, warm, going nowhere, and the sudden absence of movement was louder than anything he could have said.
“You’ve released almost everything I came in here to get. Back’s done. Shoulders are done. The psoas let go about ten minutes ago and I felt it happen.” A pause. “But you’re still holding, and it’s the last place, and I can’t reach it from out here.”
Both thumbs pressed in at the crease, at the very top of her inner thighs, an inch from where she was aching, and her breath caught audibly.
“Pelvic floor,” he said. “There’s work I can do for that. It’s not what you booked and it’s more intimate than anything we’ve done, so I offer it and I never lead anyone into it.”
He’s not going to say the rest. He’s going to make me understand it without saying it.
He’s going to make me be the one who knows.
“Here’s what I’m asking.” His voice stayed exactly level. “You’ve come a long way in ninety minutes and you’re right at the edge of the last thing. I can take you further than what you paid for and finish it properly, or I can leave it, go back to your shoulders, and you’ll walk out ninety percent better instead of all the way.”
The silence in the room was enormous. Somewhere in the building a pipe ticked.
“It should feel good. It may bring things up. And if you want it to end at any point it ends immediately, no explanation, no awkwardness, and I’ll finish your back like we never discussed it.”
Nadia’s heart was going so hard she could feel it against the padded table.
“So.” A beat. “Are you comfortable with me taking you further, or would you rather I stop here?”
He asked. Out loud. In a full sentence. And gave me both doors.
He didn’t say what it is. He knows exactly what it is and he made me the one who has to know it too.
Say no. You are a person with a job and a lease and a mother who calls on Sundays.
He is asking whether he can put his hands inside you.
And you are lying here with your legs open thinking about how much you want him to.
“I don’t.” Her voice came out wrong. She started again. “I don’t know if that’s, I mean, is that a thing? Is that something you do?”
“It’s something I’m offering you. Once. It’s a yes or a no and there’s no wrong answer.”
She thought about fourteen months. She thought about her apartment and the specific silence of it at eleven at night. She thought about the fact that she was already in this position, that she’d rotated her own hips into it when he asked, that she had been lying here for six full minutes with her legs open declining to close them.
“I’m not,” she said, into the cradle. “I don’t do this. I want to be clear that I don’t do this.”
“Like, ever. This isn’t a thing I do.”
A long pause. Her heart was going so hard the table felt like it was moving.
“Yes,” she said. “Okay. Yes.”
“Yes, I want you to.” She was burning. Her whole face was on fire inside the cradle. “Please.”
“Thank you.” His hands settled. “I’ll tell you before I do anything. Palm first.”
There was a pause before he touched her. Two seconds, maybe three, and Nadia understood exactly what was happening in those seconds and it nearly finished her on its own.
He’s looking. He’s taking his time and looking at me before he touches me.
He gets to just stand there and look at it and I asked him to.
He put his palm flat over her and just held it there.
Not moving. Covering her entirely, all of it at once, that enormous hand pressed warm over everything she had, and Nadia’s whole body clenched hard around nothing.
His hand is on my pussy. His whole hand is on my pussy. This is happening. This is actually happening.
And he’s not even moving. He’s just holding it there. Why is that worse.
She could feel herself pulsing against his palm. She was certain he could feel it too, that he was standing there with his hand cupped over her feeling her heartbeat through her own swollen flesh, taking a reading.
Say something. Say anything.
“Good,” he said. “I can feel your body’s responding well to the work. Does this feel comfortable?”
Not a leer. Not an accusation. Delivered in exactly the tone he’d used about her shoulder, a technician checking a reading, and somehow that was a hundred times filthier than if he’d said it plainly.
He’s charting me. He is standing there with his hand on my pussy asking if it’s comfortable.
And he’s right. That’s the worst part. He’s completely right.
“Tell me if that changes.”
She said nothing else. Kept her face in the cradle and her mouth shut and burned.
“I’m going to use my thumb now.”
He’s narrating. Why is him narrating the hottest thing that’s ever happened to me.
His thumb slid down through the wet and pressed, slow, until her lips opened around it.
Oh god. Oh god, he’s opening me. He’s just opening me up like it’s nothing.
He held it there. Just there, parting her, not entering, letting her feel exactly how open she already was. She could feel herself flutter helplessly around the pressure, could feel her own body trying to pull him in, and heard her breath come apart into something that had no dignity left in it at all.
Don’t stop. Please don’t stop. Please do not stop doing that.
Go in. Just go in. I’m not going to say it but please just go in.
The same voice he’d used to ask about pressure. Exactly the same.
That’s a question. That’s an actual question. He’s asking me.
Say no. Say stop. One word, you’ve had it the whole time, it costs you nothing.
Say yes and you can’t take it back. Say yes and you’re the one who did this. Say yes and this is a thing you chose on a Friday afternoon with your clothes on a chair.
I said yes. Out loud. To a stranger. In a massage room.
And I meant it. God help me, I meant it.
He went in slow, one careful degree at a time, palm staying cupped firm over everything outside, and settled deep.
He’s inside me. There is a stranger’s thumb inside me and I said yes to it and I would say yes again right now.
The fullness of it arrived in stages, the stretch and then the give and then the moment her body simply stopped negotiating and took him, and Nadia’s entire body melted into the table.
Look at it plainly for a second. A thirty-four-year-old woman face-down on a massage table in a small studio four blocks from her apartment, hips tilted up off the table, knees apart, a stranger’s thumb buried in her cunt to the last knuckle and his palm cupping her whole sex like he owned it, oil everywhere, a sheet crumpled uselessly across her lower back.
Her clothes were folded on a chair by the door. A bus went past outside.
She had never wanted anything this much in her life.
“There,” he murmured. “You’re opening beautifully around my hand. I can feel how relaxed you’re getting.”
And she was. That was the part she couldn’t get over, then or later. She wasn’t bracing against him. She was doing the opposite, sinking down onto that enormous hand, letting her weight settle into his palm, her whole pelvis going slack and heavy and welcoming. Her body had stopped treating him as an intrusion and started treating him as somewhere to rest.
I’ve relaxed onto a stranger’s hand and I’m just resting there.
And it feels like the safest I’ve been in a year.
Then he said, “You wrote a paragraph about pressure.”
“You did.” Her voice came out thin.
“You said deep. Genuinely. You said you weren’t going to say ouch.” She could hear it in his voice, the faint dry amusement of a man quoting her own handwriting back at her. “That still stand?”
Say no. Say something reasonable.
“That still stands,” Nadia said.
There was no other word for it. He put actual weight behind his thumb, the same working weight he’d put into the knot under her shoulder blade, and drove it up and forward into the wall of her, and Nadia’s whole body came off the table.
“Oh,” she said. “Oh my god.”
“No. No, don’t, don’t back off—”
“I’m not going to.” The pressure held, deep and immovable and stretching her in a direction she had not known she could be stretched. “This is the same work. Same principle, same depth, just a different room in the same house. Breathe out.”
She breathed out and he went deeper.
It was enormous. That was the thing she had not been prepared for at all, that a single thumb could feel like that, could open her that wide from the inside, could press hard enough to change the shape of what was in there. It was a stretch and a pressure and a slow relentless push all at once, and it hurt exactly the way the shoulder had hurt, which is to say it hurt in the way that means something is finally being fixed.
“There’s the tension,” he said. “Feel it? That’s what you’ve been walking around with.”
“I didn’t know that was—”
“Nobody does. Breathe out again.”
He pressed harder. She made a sound with no dignity in it whatsoever and pushed back onto his hand to meet it, because that was what he had taught her to do for the last hour, and the pressure landed so deep and so exactly right that she saw color.
Then he stopped moving entirely.
“Okay. This part is an exercise, and it’s going to feel strange. I want you to squeeze down on my thumb. Same as you’d stop yourself mid-stream. Squeeze, hold for five, then release completely.”
He’s giving me homework. He’s giving me actual homework.
“Good. Hold it. Two. Three. Four. Five.” His voice didn’t change at all. “And release. All the way. Let everything go.”
She let go, and the release rushed through her hips like warm water.
“Your control’s better than most people’s,” he said. “You can feel exactly what you’re doing in there. That’s going to make this easier.”
Oh my god, he’s grading me. He’s giving me feedback on my pussy.
“Again. Harder this time. Squeeze like you mean it.”
She squeezed harder, and this time he pressed forward and up as she did it, his thumb driving into that specific spot on the front wall while she was clamped down tight around him, and Nadia made a strangled sound into the cradle.
“That’s the one,” he said. “Feel where that lands? That’s exactly where you’re holding. Squeeze into my thumb, not away from it.”
That is not homework. That is absolutely not homework.
She squeezed until it shook, gripping down on him with everything she had.
“You’ve got more than that. Squeeze.”
She found more. She had no idea where it came from. She clamped down on his thumb so hard she felt her own thighs lock, and he pressed up into her through the whole of it and made a low approving sound she felt in her spine.
“There it is. That’s real strength. Hold. Two. Three. Four. Five.”
Her whole body was trembling.
And he was watching her do it. That landed on her all at once. He was standing there watching her pussy clench and release around his thumb, watching her whole body work, with the lamp on and nothing covering her, and he could see every single thing she was doing in there.
He’s watching me do this. He can see me gripping him.
He asked me to squeeze so he could watch me squeeze.
“Open. Opposite of what you just did. Push out, push open, let everything spread and go soft.” His palm pressed flat against her from the outside. “Bear down a little. Open around my hand. Make room.”
Make room. He wants me to make room.
She did it, and the feeling was obscene, her whole pussy pushing open and slack and welcoming around his thumb, everything giving way at once, and she felt him sink in another quarter inch as she softened.
“There,” he said, and there was something new in his voice, a fraction less clinical. “That’s it. That’s exactly it. God, you open beautifully when you let yourself.”
Oh no. Oh no, I like that. I like that so much.
“Again. Squeeze hard, then open wider than last time.”
And again. And again. He counted every one out loud, six in total, squeeze until she shook and hold with him pressed exactly where it undid her, then open, wider each round, letting everything unclench and spread and give.
By the fourth she’d stopped being able to keep her hips still.
By the fifth she was rocking back into him on every squeeze without being told.
By the sixth she was making a noise on every release, low and broken and continuous, her whole pelvis shaking in that fine involuntary tremor she recognized from earlier, and she could not have told anybody her own last name.
“There we go,” he said quietly.
“I don’t, I’m not sure I can—”
“You can. That’s what this is.” His palm pressed her flat between the shoulder blades, pinning her chest to the table. “That’s exactly what we’re trying to do. Something in you is coming loose. Don’t fight it. Don’t clamp down on it and don’t be polite about it.”
“Keep going. Same rhythm, don’t stop now.” Steady, unhurried, exactly the voice he’d used about her shoulder. “You’ve done all the work already. All that’s left is letting it finish.”
She rocked back onto his thumb and felt it drive deep into that place and heard herself make a sound she’d be hearing in her head for weeks.
“That’s it. You’re clenching in your jaw now. Stop that too. Everything goes.” His hand pressed harder into her back. “Whatever’s about to happen, let it happen. You don’t have to be dignified about it and you don’t have to be quiet.”
I can’t, I can’t, that’s too much—
I’m going to. Oh my god, I’m actually going to.
“Breathe out and let go.”
Everything in her unlocked at once.
“There it is,” he said. “Good girl.”
It took her whole body. Not a flutter, not a shiver, a convulsion. Her hips slammed down onto his hand and her back tried to arch and couldn’t because his palm was holding her down, and that only made it worse, made it enormous, huge rolling contractions folding her around his thumb and squeezing down on it so hard she could feel every ridge of his knuckle. Her thighs seized. Her stomach seized. Her feet came off the table. A sound came out of her with no words in it and she did not stop making it.
He kept his thumb exactly where it was and let her ride out every single wave.
She came so hard she stopped hearing the room.
That was the first coherent thing that came back, arriving from somewhere very far away while her body was still clenching in slow diminishing pulses around a stranger’s hand.
Did I just come? On a massage table? Did that just happen?
I came. I just came. In a strip mall. On a Friday afternoon. From a man’s thumb.
She could not make it feel real. It kept sliding off. She lay there in the wreckage of her own nervous system and could not get her mind to accept the plain sentence I had an orgasm just now, even though she was still shaking, even though she could still feel him inside her, even though the evidence was overwhelming and ongoing.
Then the second wave arrived, and it wasn’t physical.
Then it hitched again, and her breath went ragged in a way that had nothing to do with the orgasm, and Nadia realized with a sort of distant horror that she was crying.
Hard. Silently, but hard. Her whole face crumpling into the padded ring of the face cradle, her shoulders shaking, hot tears running sideways across her cheekbones and soaking into the little towel he’d draped over the leather.
No. No, no, don’t do this, do not do this in front of him.
She got her jaw clamped shut and made absolutely no sound. She kept her face buried and did not lift her head one inch, and she let it come out of her in complete silence because that was the only dignity available.
It wasn’t sadness. There was no feeling attached to it at all, which was the strangest part, the part she’d try to describe to nobody ever. Something that had been clenched in her for a very long time, longer than three weeks, longer than fourteen months, was simply leaving, and it had chosen her tear ducts as the exit.
She thought she was hiding it.
His hand pressed a little more firmly between her shoulder blades. That was all. He didn’t say anything, didn’t ask, didn’t make her acknowledge it.
“Take your time,” he said quietly. “That’s the psoas letting go. It’s very common. Nothing’s wrong.”
And Nadia, face down in a puddle of her own tears with a man’s thumb still inside her, felt something in her chest crack the rest of the way open, because he had given her the excuse and they both knew it was an excuse and he had given it to her anyway.
He didn’t take his hand away.
That was what she noticed as the crying thinned out and her breathing came back. He was still in her. Still deep, still pressed up against that spot, his palm still cupped warm and firm over everything, completely motionless, waiting for her to finish being wherever she’d gone.
She could feel her own pulse against his thumb. She could feel herself still fluttering around him in small aftershocks, every ten or fifteen seconds, her body not quite done.
He’s still there. He’s just holding me.
And I’m still so, oh my god, I’m still—
“You’re still contracting around me.” Flat, factual, a technician reporting a reading. “The tissue hasn’t fully released. There’s more in there.”
She said nothing. Her face was wet and her hands were shaking on the edges of the table.
“I have twenty minutes left in your appointment,” he said. “I can finish out your back, or I can do that again. Your call. Same terms as before, and the same word applies.”
Say you’re finished. Say thank you and finish the massage like a normal woman who came in for a knot in her shoulder.
He said there’s more in there.
There is absolutely more in there.
“Again,” she said, into the cradle, before she could stop herself. Then, mortified by how fast it had come out: “Please.”
“Okay.” She heard something almost like approval. “This one will be bigger. You’re already open, so don’t fight it, and don’t be quiet about it. Nobody’s listening.”
He pressed forward and up.
The second one built slower and hit harder.
She was raw by then, oversensitive, every pass of his thumb against that spot landing like a struck nerve, and she could not have held still if she’d wanted to. She rocked back onto him without being told. She spread her knees wider without being told.
“That’s it. Squeeze for me again.”
She squeezed down on him, hard, and heard him make that low sound.
“Good. Harder than that, you’ve done it before.” His thumb pressed up and held. “Now open. Wider than that. All the way.”
She opened, and he sank deeper, and she sobbed.
“Again. Squeeze. Open. Keep going, don’t stop doing it, all the way through this time.”
So she did. Clench and open and clench and open, over and over, fucking herself onto his hand with her own muscles while he pressed exactly where he needed to, and somewhere in the rhythm of it she stopped being able to tell which part was him and which part was her.
She heard herself begging at some point, quiet and continuous into the leather, please, please, don’t stop, please, and she was too far gone to be humiliated about it.
“Take what you need,” he said. “That’s what it’s for.”
I’m taking it. I’m actually taking it. I’m fucking a stranger’s hand on a table and I’m the one taking it.
It rolled through her longer than the first one, deeper, contraction after contraction that lifted her hips clean off the table and slammed them back down onto his hand, and this time she was not silent at all. She made noise. Real noise, muffled and animal and completely beyond her control, her whole body wringing itself out around his thumb over and over while he held absolutely steady and let her take every last second of it.
When she finally went limp she was crying again, and this time she didn’t bother trying to hide it.
He held her through all of it. Didn’t pull away, didn’t shift, didn’t go anywhere, his thumb buried and steady and his other hand flat between her shoulder blades keeping her anchored to the table while her body finished with her. He didn’t move until she stopped. Not a second before.
Then he eased out of her so slowly and so carefully that it made her eyes sting all over again.
And then he did the thing she would think about longest.
He put both hands flat on her lower back and pressed her down, gently, guiding her hips back to the table out of that tilted open position, easing her out of it the same way he’d eased her into it. Flat. Neutral. Legs together. He drew the sheet back down over her, smoothed it across her hips, tucked it at her side, and then went back to work.
Long slow passes up either side of her spine. The same effleurage he’d opened with an hour ago. Unhurried, professional, closing out a session.
“You’re going to be sore tomorrow through the hips,” he said, in exactly the voice he’d used about her shoulder. “Drink more water than you think you need. Heat if it aches, not ice.”
He’s finishing the massage.
He’s actually finishing the massage.
He worked her back for another four or five minutes. Neck, shoulders, the long muscles beside the spine, everything gentle now, bringing her down. Then a final pass with his palms flat from her shoulders all the way to her tailbone, and a light squeeze at both feet, and he was done.
“Stay there as long as you want. Don’t get up fast, your blood pressure just did something dramatic.” A pause at the door. “You did really well today.”
Nadia lay there in the warm quiet room with her face wet and her body wrecked and her hips loose for the first time in a year.
He’d given her exactly what she came in for. Not the thing she’d booked. The thing she’d needed, which she hadn’t known how to ask for and could never have named, and he had read it off her body the way he read everything else off her body, and asked permission, and provided it, and then finished her appointment properly and told her to drink water.
It was a service. That was what finally landed. It had been a service the entire time.
And she was allowed to have needed it.
She got dressed with her hands still shaking, sitting on the edge of the table for a full minute before she trusted her legs. Her hair was a catastrophe. Her skin smelled like the oil.
At the desk the woman ran her card and asked if she wanted to book the next one.
“Yeah,” Nadia said. “Three weeks.”
She sat in her car in the lot for a while before starting it, running diagnostics on herself, checking for shame, for regret, for the queasy specific dread of having had something done to her.
Nothing came. She checked twice.
What came instead was the memory of that one word, handed to her free of charge before anything started and never once used. She’d had ninety minutes to say it. Instead she’d said yes. Out loud, more than once, to a series of increasingly specific questions, and then she had pushed back into his hands over and over and over.
Nobody had done anything to her. That was the part she’d have trouble explaining even to herself. She had been given the exit at every single turn and had declined it at every single turn, and had still somehow gotten to experience the whole thing as something that happened to her, and both were true at once, and she was not going to examine that any further today.
She could turn her head all the way to the left for the first time since March.
She was starving. Genuinely starving, in a way she hadn’t been in weeks.
At two in the morning she was still awake, phone brightness turned all the way down, reading about the parasympathetic nervous system and finding every single thing her body had done that afternoon described in flat clinical language by people who found none of it remarkable.
There was an explanation for all of it. The explanation didn’t touch it at all.
Three weeks, she thought.
She could wait three weeks.
