bear with me; this is still about minecraft youtube. itβs about the misogyny inherent in translating a word that means dog as bitch only when itβs applied to a woman. itβs about male translators making helen call herself a whore when in the original text she called herself an ill omen. itβs about selective editing, at the core of it; redubbing and rewriting helenβs description of herself into how men think she should describe herself: slut, whore, bitch. itβs about dogs :) and about how no one has ever seen helen as helen, they only see her as an image, a symbol, an object, a possession. sheβs trapped in her own narrative. sheβs a harbinger of doom. sheβs not even allowed, in translation, to keep her own words. in 3L ep 1 scott tells jimmy use your words and then edits out specifically that line. in 3L ep 4 jimmy says I look like the villain, but I wasnβt and scott edits out specifically but I wasnβt. jimmy didnβt get a say in whether he was going to be part of scottβs happily ever after, because you only get to see that happily ever after from scottβs perspective. he wanted jimmy there and so jimmy was there. twice now has helenβs eidolon been brought to troy.
a note: helen does have a misogynistic view of herself and her role in the narrativeβall characters in the iliad view helen through the lens of both cultural and personal misogynyβbut the specific word choices made by male translators often superimpose modern misogynistic language atop the original layer present in the text. one such instance is when helen, speaking to hector, refers to herself as αΌΞΌΞ΅αΏΞΏ ΞΊΟ Ξ½α½ΈΟ ΞΊΞ±ΞΊΞΏΞΌΞ·ΟΞ¬Ξ½ΞΏΟ α½ΞΊΟΟ ΞΏΞΟΟΞ·Ο (6.344). literally translated, thatβs I | dog | harmful | horrible. most male translators over the years have interpreted dog as bitch, e.g. βbitch that I am, vicious, schemingβ / horror to freeze the heart!β (robert fagles, 1990); βIβm a horrible, conniving bitchβ (ian johnston, 2000); βI am a bitch and a cold-hearted mischief-makerβ (anthony verity, 2011); βIβm a bitch, a horrible mischief-maker!β (peter green, 2015). when the same word is used elsewhere to describe men or actual dogs it is usually not translated as bitch.
a further note: to be clear, Iβm comparing the dehumanisation inherent in stripping a woman of her own words when translating her dialogue to the dehumanisation jimmy experienced by being stripped of his autonomy in third life. Iβm not saying the way jimmy was treated was misogynistic, although most hierarchical systems of dehumanisation are structured similarly, so there will of course be parallels. really the reason Iβm comparing jimmy to helen is because theyβre both hot and everyone wants them.

Help a Trans Woman secure HRT and an Education
Hello all. I am unfortunately coming to you, hat in hand, rattling my can, on behalf of a trans girl, Tessa, that I love dearly like a sister. She's been very housing insecure for a while, but fortunately, she's found stable housing. However, since she hasn't been able to work or continue her education, she has been having a hard time getting healthcare in the USA for HRT due to the cost or any amount of income to pay to finish getting her GED. Normally, I'd front the cost a bit, but unfortunately, the university does not pay me in the summer.
We're hoping to raise 500 Dollars for the HRT and 200 dollars for the complete cost of the GED testing. Her Ca$happ is $marbledcrayfish. Thank you so much for reading this and potentially helping Tessa out!

Thank you everyone! Just clearing/nearing the $ 200 mark means a lot to us. This means that Tessa can finally finish getting her GED, which opens up a lot more ways for her to be financially stable! We're very excited for her to have a pathway to a brighter future. We're now fundraising the rest of $ 700 for her to have a HRT stockpile in the medium-long term. Thank you all so much again!
my problem is just that I am not a very driven or determined person despite my incredibly lucky and privileged background and yet I want to reap the rewards of being a driven and determined person, and every time I am reminded of this fact through for example, the accomplishments of others, I immediately spiral into levels of pathetic self-hatred and self-harm that ultimately do nothing and lead to nothing.

You should take some time to read @3liza's post documenting the Phantom Report Bug (which she deserves praise for doing, thank you eliza) and see how fucking broken Tumblr's report tool is. I also want to reiterate something she is once again correct about: no one files bug reports. I have first hand experience working at Tumblr and I remember having to tell web devs on Staff "i saw a post about someone talking about a bug" and they were unaware because no one followed through to file a bug. I have fixed bugs that I saw people posting about that were in my domain (I'm a mobile dev) but were not in the system. No this is not an endorsement of "complain about it enough and eventually someone will see it", this is an endorsement of "file a bug report directly to computer companies and people will most likely read it and probably fix it". I mean it this is not a Tumblr-only thing. I've seen this at every company I've worked for. Just fucking file a bug report please I beg you, software gets complicated and the devs are just unaware that there's a bug until you bring it to your attention. And they want to fix the bug! I promise!
