Leeta does not get enough credit as the co-founder of the bar employees Union! Give her the flowers she deserves!!!
You know, for all the conversations I see go around about the JemâHadar, most of the critiques are pretty orthogonal to one of my big issues with how theyâre handled, namely that the writing pretty consistently instills sympathy for the JemâHadar through their status as Ideal Soldiers. Theyâre soldiers being used and exploited by people in power who care nothing for their individual lives - a pretty common narrative thread in the decades following the Vietnam War, see also eg. TNGâs âThe Huntedâ - and that exploitation is sympathetic and tragic because of the soldierly virtue they display in their loyalty and sense of honour and unwavering courage and, above all else, their unquestioning willingness to sacrifice themselves for something greater than themselves. And I think that writing maneuver somewhat undermines the showâs anti-war messaging and deconstruction of that kind of heroic military ideal in episodes like âValiantâ and âNor the Battle to the Strongâ and âThe Siege of AR-558.â

#i've thought abt this#i also have tboughts abt them being masculine and physically fit#as opposed to the vorta that come in two genders and are effeminate and also treacherous selfish manipulative etc#there is this Common Soldier vs Immoral Elites-esque thing about it all#not always but generally quite often#esp. keevan#who is strongly judged by sisko for not taking responsibility for his people#and working to secure only his needs#keevan is sort of a Gay Draft Dodger. or at least an unsymphathetic representation of one
Ha, you landed on the exact episode I was thinking of.
I love âRocks and Shoalsâ - Iâd rank it in the top ten episodes of the show, easily. Itâs a really fascinating examination of the ways in which people are railroaded into being complicit in awful things, and the balancing of Sisko and Kiraâs arcs wrt that kind of moral injury is really deft. Keevan is an interesting case study of someone constrained by the violence of the entire system that created him, and for whom the only way out is more violence. Yes, itâs despicable to exploit his power over the JemâHadar to send them to their deaths, but he also had very little choice, both due to the immediate circumstances of the episode (without the white, the JemâHadar were already slated for death, and Keevan and the others along with them) and due to their prescribed roles. The limited power he holds over the JemâHadar doesnât change the fact that Keevan was created and granted that power by people who see him as nothing more than a tool. His life has no value for its own sake, and heâs never been permitted to cultivate any kind of autonomy or sense of personal identity. I actually think there is somethingâĻ not heroic, exactly, but admirable about taking steps to ensure his own survival when doing so is anathema to the Foundersâ values.
What I find frustrating is the lack of sympathy afforded to the character in that regard - not even within the episode (as I think it makes sense for Sisko and Bashir to be disgusted by him), but in its critical reception. So many people will remark on how smarmy and slimy Keevan is, and how tragic the JemâHadar are, in ways that reflect exactly the kind of exaltation of masculine strength and aggression and demonization of effeminate-coded behind-the-scenes plotting that youâre talking about. Also, I think a lot of people are quite uncomfortable with the fact that being coerced into holding power over others, exploiting others, etc, is also in and of itself a form of harm. That the Vorta might be culpable for the harms they perpetuate against the JemâHadar and for their place in upholding the JemâHadarâs subjugation, while also themselves being harmed by the system that incentivizes their doing so and leaves very little in the way of alternatives, seems to be a set of truths that people have trouble reconciling.
The Vorta are granted a kind of pathos in canon, especially through Weyoun (his lines about not understanding aesthetics and wanting to be able to carry a tune, Weyoun 6 going rogue and looking for some kind of meaning through latching onto Odo as his god, etc). But there is little in the way of acknowledgement, in canon and in the reception of the show, that the Vorta are enslaved. They are victims as well! And Iâll confess I donât quite understand why so many expressed wishes for the JemâHadar to be liberated donât take the Vorta into account, because I think some sort of âclass solidarityâ between the two groups is one thing thatâs really missing from the show. The JemâHadar seem to be much easier to sympathize with in this regard, and I suspect that at least part of that stems from what I was outlining in my OP.

Odoâs role in far beyond the stars as the editor whoâs âjust doing what the owners of the magazine tell himâ even if that includes being racist and sexist is such a fantastic parallel to his role as a collaborator in the occupation. Heâs not the one committing genocide, heâs not the bad guy here, heâs just enforcing the rule of the ones who are actually committing the genocide.

Something so funny about rereading one's own unfinished fics. Like wow this is pretty good! Almost as if was written exactly according to what I personally like in fact! Someone should finish it!

a little colour experiment and supporting women's wrongs
The funniest thing about them deciding that Dax is still alive and a thousand years old is that.... this is not actually a good thing that what it's up to is teaching a class on Sisko. For Dax. Sisko is important, but the fact that it's specifically Dax doing this....
Like, not being able to move past the previous host's life was the falling of so many Dax hosts. Jadzia almost let herself get executed for something Curzon did, because she still loved his past lover. And she still had feelings for Tobias' wife and was willing to act on them, if Lenara was up to this. Also she basically got the whole Klingon weabooism from Curzon. Ezri basically just stepped into Jadzia's life and also had sex with her husband.
And it's been 800 years. Somehow, Dax is alive. And it's STILL doing this??? The new host is dedicating herself to keeping Sisko's memory alive? Nothing better happened in those 800 years to work on? LEARN TO MOVE ON, BITCH, THIS IS DIRE
It's actually crazy that Kasidy Yates was dating a Starfleet Captain who worked near the Cardassian border while also being a marquis smuggler. The insane level of justified confidence she had

Guess whose car just ~broke down on the highway~ at 11pm at night!
Guess we're back to crowd funding! The tow is going to cost 179$ because I dont have the best insurance. I have no idea what happened to the car yet, just that the oil light came on. When I bought it not long ago the oil was still good, so odds are its a mechanical issue. I'll update when I can about how much help I'll need with that.
You can pitch in at ko-fi.com/rosebijoumme or my cashapp $FaeKhawal. Please help me out here, I'm about to have to move and the Uber from my home to work is crazy expensive
(Screenshots and photos as proof)
Update: first company canceled on me, called another and they are cheaper by 40 dollars!
I'm going to try to get a mobile mechanic to come by tomorrow. I checked the dipstick after I got home and it is dry. It was still wet with oil when I pulled it out so there's probably still some oil in there, especially because to my understanding, the oil PAN actually has a liter of oil, even if the dipstick is dry. It was good when I bought it from a mechanic. He did not tell me the last time it got the oil change. I really should have battered him about that. I'm used to my car's oil light coming on to let me know that I need to get it changed soon. Not right before the engine stalls out because there's not enough oil! So I'm hoping that having to crank it to charge my phone so I could call the tow service because my phond battery was so low and the first one canceled on me and wasted my fucking time did not ruin the engine.
Making a new post because I know sometimes older ones get less traction
Hi all! So the past few months I've been stuck with a very low paying job and a shitty car that was Frankly hazardous to drive. I asked for help covering the first month of insurance and fees, which people kindly did, and saved enough from the old job, a new job, and my tax refund to get a new (used) car!
However, doing so took out most of my money, and while I was out getting the new plate (private sale, didn't get a temporary one) a cop ticketed me and called a tow (the city that I live in overwhelmingly uses street parking). I got back while she was doing that and before the truck, but even though I had the plate in my hand she refused to give me mercy. As such I had to pay the tow ($315) and will have to also pay a ticket (probably $150, though depending on the day I may be able to go to court and plea to get the fine reduced). I do get paid again early next month, but money is really tight for me until then. If you have the means to help wnd it wont cause you issues, you can hit me up at ko-fi.com/rosebijoumme or $FaeKhawal.
