This is Itzig's second outfit that is never described (because Kira and Girani don't actually attent the actual ceremony) so I wanted to at least draw it.
The "crochet" garments make no sense portrayed like this (the backside should be visible through the frontside through the holes) but I kept them like this for legibility.
the majority of the worldbuilding is in the fic itself, but one note on weddings:
the ceremony has been modernized and changed but historically it could include changing a d'jarra "within reason", so within one down/one up (and probably except the lowest one). so getting from the bottom to the top is possible, but it takes around eight generations.
the closer to the Occupation time, the more common it became for better-off members of lower d'jarras to marry poor members of higher d'jarras, kind of like poor nobility marrying noveau riche on earth (so one side gets the money out of it and another gets the social advance). even though the d'jarras are not in use anymore bajorans still sometimes change their earrings to signal a change of identity, beginning a job in a new field or joining a new family (like itzig and like girani, who initially threw her weaver-caste earring out to hide from cardassian "employment offices" but kept wearing her chosen one even after the Occupation ended.)
1. are the great apes extint because of the eugenic and romulan wars and other mistakes or did we learn to talk to them? ape translator?
2. is it fairly normal to have a close relative like this on the planet, eg. cardassians have zoos full of some weird alligator chimpanzees that could rip your face off but display intelligence?
3. is it actually not normal at all to have them and everybody thinks that the ape situation on earth is really really weird? and nobody believes the humans when they claim the apes aren't concious and everyone is convinced federation just has its own menks/remans they don't want to admit having
4. are those conspiracy theories acrually right and does a society with better translators come and take our apes away to political asylum because we can't treat them right? because i feel like we aren't treating them right. imagine vulcans come and we lose custody of the orangutan
that's true from what we know... but what if they longer had to fear being put to work? would an orangutan like the shore leave planet or would it have horrible orangutan visions on it? would an orangutan like risa? also which ape do you think would like being taken away to space to be a member of the instertellar community? i feel like bonobos might find it exciting.

The 13 number comes up a lot because it got stuck in peoples heads when it was mentioned that the crash happened in 2366, when she was 13. By the end of the show however shes in her early 20s. Its an important distinction to make cuz. Shes not like. An actual literal child, guys. She had her childhood stolen and shes young, rather.

Creatures of the Bajoran countryside featured in Rainmongerers. (ao3 link). Descriptions under cut.
Despite its name and appearance, the Long Crane is actually closer to a mammal, as it gives live birth and breastfeeds its young. These animals, reaching in their adult sizes up to 1.20 meters are often described in Bajoran folklore as tricksters and friendly spirits -- unless wronged. A displeased long crane was told to be able to pull fowl and children underwater to drown them, set fire to wooden houses by stealing burning branches from settlements, and even claw people's eyes out. On the other hand, having a friendly long crane was said to bring prosperity and the Prophets' good will.
2. A juvenile long crane is fat, helpless and often left alone for hours. This would make them a perfect food source. However, cultural taboo forbids Bajorans from killing baby long cranes, even in times of hunger, as harming one of them was the sure way to make an adult long crane angry. Oddly enough, Cardassians stationed in areas populated by long cranes abstained from killing juveniles as well, perhaps because of their uncanny similarity to a juvenile Cardassian, both in appearance and tone of voice.
3. The desire to breed these fish for meat has led the Cardassians to flood almost the entire Litar region with water. The farming operation was quickly abandoned, but the fish have adapted very well, quickly destroying most of the native ecosystem.
4. The igj'ira grain is home to many small wasps and beetles, who nest inside of its heads. Instead of repelling them with pesticides, Bajorans harvest the heads of grain with the insects still inside them, and process them into flour. As a result, Bajoran "bread", vasu zhian, has a very high protein content and is not suitable for vegetarians.
5. One of the species of mosquito inhabiting the Litar region. Also commonly eaten.
6. A swamp frog. It has nothing to hide.
7. . One of the only native species of fish still surviving in the areas affected by Cardassian climate engineering. Named somehow inaccurately, as its one "eye", located in the same entrance as its mouth, is actually a multi-sensory organ, the exact workings of which are still not known.
