Iβm bored. Whatβs your most controversial opinion about PJO?
This is a safe space no bullying guys >:(
nico's a dandy.. he's a rich 1930s or 1940s boy, he grows up to be one of those men who care to be tidy and well dressed.. nico di angelo out in the street in joggers? not a fucking chance.. he'd never sit for a meal wearing pijamas if he can help it
Sometimes I think about the fact that Hades/Pluto had the di Angelo siblings and Hazel in a very short timeframe and I'm just. Struck by the difference in the way his partners and thier family was treated. Why did Richard have to make the woman of color the bad parent and why did the god have to be absent with her and thier daughter, whereas Maria di Angelo got pretty much a whole relationship for like, what, at least a few years? Why. Like whatever with the whole Roman/Greek thing, thats a flimsy excuse. I'm pretty sure its because Hazel's character was not planned in any capacity when Nico was exploring his backstory in PJO, despite whatever Riordan may say about planning his books in advance. If she were planned, it would have been nice to have like, any hint whatsoever.
Like for reference: allegedly Hades wanted to build the di Angelos a palace in the underworld to keep them safe (this is from the wiki so don't quote me) whereas Hazel and her mother. Didn't get that. At all. And some of that can be chalked up to Marie's own choices and Gaea's influence, but ultimately it was Pluto's absence before Alaska that caused those things. He failed to protect them, where he did not fail to protect the di Angelo children.
Moreover, why isn't this disparity a bigger point of contention in Hazel and Nico's relationship - Nico somehow got Hades to be present, to almost be something like a father, enough to preserve his and Bianca's life even if just for the sake of a prophecy, whereas Hazel got asphodel and a curse and a mother who spent her life spiralling into madness. She has a right to be bitter about that. Pluto may have tried to stop Marie from going to Alaska, but that was after years of dealing with a curse and frankly, too little too late. He didn't vouch for either of them in the underworld either, and Hazel, a dead child, took the burden of saving her mother from eternal punishment, just like she took the burden of sacrificing herself. Thats fucked, and I feel like if it had been any of the di Angelos he would have done more.
Anyway Hazel and Marie Levesque deserved better.
There are a few reasons for that.
1. Hades vs Pluto. The Roman gods are more strict, rough and uncaring. As we see with Jason and Jupiter (a.k.a Zeus who seems to care more about Thalia) Hades is a bit softer to his children.
2. He simply loved Maria more (not bc Marie was black bc gods dont think like that. They are more fluid and uncaring about human prejudices) Marie, given her awful circumstances of being a single black mother in the 1930s was being misled by Gaea to give into greed. Marie would also call Hazel a cursed child. But I blame that on Gaea speaking in her ear. Maria loved Hades unconditionally and loved her children unconditionally. That's why he loved her more and was willing to break rules for her.
3. The reason Hades is closer to Nico more than Hazel is bc Nico visits him more and speaks to him more. Also he doesnt speak to Hazel as much bc he doesnt want to have to send her back to the dead. He wants her to be happy. As he told Nico he wants both of them to have happy lives.
4. Pluto had to let them die. Hades/Pluto knows when deaths need to be prevented or not prevented. I have a feeling he knew Hazel was important to the future prophecy. If he stopped them from going then Hazel would not have been part of the group that saved the world in the future, as messed up as that is.
(As a black woman myself, I dont think it was about race but about Rick just wanting to write different backgrounds. I mean if Pluto had told Marie the same things he'd told Maria then Nicos backstory would have felt cheap and copied. And yea, she definitely wasnt as bad as Beryl Grace. And once Gaea got out of her mind we saw her true personality)
A Story About the Hunters of Artemis
They are sexist, stupid, lame and annoying~
The End.
(I think the hunters could have been an awesome addition to pjo. But they come off ignorant and irritating. If it were the other way around, say 'The Archers of Apollo' and the boys constantly said girls were inferior and stupid then we would all have a problem with it)

Okay. So my guess (if this is a true hint about a future solangelo book) is that Nico is going to die protecting either the troglodytes or Will, and Will is going to go insane at the loss (bc why cant Nico have anything?) and storm into the underworld demanding his soul back from Hades. And says something so poetic about his love for his son that even a fury sheds a tear. Hades obviously wanting to let his son live cant just let him go on special privilege so instead let's Will lead him back to the living on the deal that he does not look back at him (aka Orpheus/Eurydice)
And its probably a lot harder for Will than he previously thinks because he can't feel if Nico is there or not. He can't feel his thin cold hand in his. He just has to believe it's there. All the way across Hades palace, the entire journey back on Charons boat, past Cerberus, past the long line of dead people waiting to find their place in hell. He can't turn around and check or he loses him forever.
And that would probably kill Will.
(I like the idea of Will being the one to lead Nico back instead of the other way, because we've already seen what Nico would do for a crush. But we dont really know much about Will and I think it would be more powerful to see someone do something unconditional for Nico for once)

Blood of Olympus
The Battle of the Labyrinth
[where they differ]
The difference on how they both treat Nico
Uhhh.... Percy choked tf outta Nico when he was only 12 yrs old, and when the Argo 2 was debating on whether or not to save him from the jar Percy was too focused on his stupid pancakes to say anything. Will is willing to go to Tartarus for this boy. First impressions aren't everything
Okay, so a few things
1.) Percy didnβt know who he was attacking at first and leapt on instinct, which makes sense given his life. He continued to choke Nico because he thought Nico sold him out to the underworld which would prevent him from fighting in a war that could destroy the world. He had a right to be angry, but they both make up for it by the end of the book (something Rick apparently forgot)
2.) Percy DID say something and it was for saving Nico. First it was in his dream, he said it to Nico himself
Then, He said it to hazel and everyone else on the Argo 2
And before that Percy said βMost of the time Nico ended up siding with e good guys. He certainly didnβt deserve slow suffocation in a bronze jarβ
Percy should have absolutely been more vocal about saving Nico, annabeth too
As Will should not have been so dismissive of Nicos trama
This is less of a critique of Will or Percy as characters and more of a critique on Rick and how he choose to write them
That is true. I wish Percy would have been more vocal on that. And it still really isnt justified for an athletic 16 yr old to choke a skinny 12 yr old no matter if they are angry at them or not (plus Percy saw Nico freak out when Hades said that he would send him to the dungeon, so...?) Will 'kind of' gets a pass since he really doesn't know Nico and Nico was about to die (still hate the way that scene was written) and I also thought it was weird that Percy would tell jason (a guy he doesn't know as well as nico) that Nico ONE TIME at 12 yrs old accidentally got him locked up. Like, let it go Percy. But in tower of nero Will treats Nico better than Percy really ever has (like hes a normal teenager)

Maybe Nico's type is surfer boys? ππ»
Wait, if Nico's canon birthday is January 28, then he's still fourteen in tower of nero right? I've been thinking of what the solangelo age gap is and Will said he was fifteen in hidden oracle. Is the age gap one year or, like 6 months?
Also, a cooler alternative ending in tower of nero could have been Nico having a birthday party for once.
Percy: Telling everyone in heroes of olympus that Nico is untrustworthy and no one on the Argo should trust him bc Nico made one mistake when he was twelve years old whilst being completely oblivious to Nico's crush on him
Also Percy: Man, why doesn't this kid want to be my friend?
Nico: πππ
(Meanwhile Nico telling everyone how great and nice Percy is and telling Bob to save Percy & Annabeth bc Percy was "a good person" really makes me upset π€)

Three things that Nico di Angelo should've already done in the books but hasn't:
1. Raise a dinosaur skeleton
2. Tell a ghost story π»
3. Kiss William Andrew Solace
