simple self care to make you feel better.
some things to do for yourself so you’ll feel better. (this is coming from someone with severe depression. this is how I’m slowly coming back to life)
eat something healthy. fruits, nuts, vegetables, fresh home-made food, oatmeal, and other good things that will make you feel better. microwaved dinners will not make you feel good if that’s all you eat. and don’t constantly eat out, make food at home. you’ll feel proud and it’ll taste better (usually)
go to bed early. set your alarms, then put away your phone and turn off your laptop and tv. turn out all the lights, close all the curtains, get in bed, and stay still until you’re asleep. learn your windows for sleeping too, not sleeping enough and oversleeping both make you feel terrible. trust me.
wake up early. take a shower, wash your face and hair, drink coffee with the sun, eat breakfast, and stretch extra good after your shower. don’t forget to put on moisturizer and lotion after to keep your skin healthy.
wash your sheets. or at least just change your pillowcase. washing your sheets and blankets doesn’t take long, and it always feels better to climb in a bed that’s clean. plus, your room will smell better and you’ll feel less like a bear after hibernation.
put on clean clothe. staying in the same pair of sweatpants, leggings, t-shirt, hoodie, whatever it is will make you feel gross. clean clothes also keep your skin healthy because you don’t keep building up oils and dirt in the fabric. after you take off your dirty clothes, put them in the hamper and do not pull them back out unless its to wash them.
clean out your phone. check all you notifications, answer emails, delete old photos and screenshots, and even if you only check a few or do a few. you’ll feel better.
go out and walk. if you have to go somewhere close, walk. driving and taking the bus becomes redundant. walks always show you new things. if you have a dog, take them. if your neighbor does, ask them if their dog would like to go with you for a walk.
if it takes five minutes or less, go ahead and do it. wash off your dish. pick up the clothes on your floor. take out the trash. living in a less cluttered space is so much better than a wild place.
find music that makes you feel like summer. beach pop songs are mindless, but they’re good to listen to if you just want background music. sad music and lofi music is great, but the happier the cords, the better you feel while listening to it.
brush your teeth after every meal. it makes you feel so much better after you eat, and it’s a small way to stay clean and healthy. plus, a brighter smile will make you want to smile more.
and this is stupid, but drink water. Keep your organs healthy. they work extra hard for you, and they need a good cleanse just like you do. plus, the bags under your eyes and the dry skin will slowly disappear with every cup.
and don’t be too hard on yourself. if you can maybe do one or two things on this list, its a start. be proud of yourself for waking up, for getting out of bed, for brushing you teeth. The little things matter.
