where I live the one quintessential piece of marriage advice every newlywed receives goes something like “your marriage is like a boat. a whole Ocean of water can’t sink a boat from the outside. the boat only sinks of water gets *inside* the boat. don’t let the water of life’s problems get into your marriage” and like I get the point but it’s such an oversimplification. There’s gonna be problems that are inevitably going to impact your marriage. If you focus solely on preventing the water from entering, it’ll eventually fail. Focus that energy on building a big ass bucket. Or a bunch of little ones. Keep the water out of the boat but also be ready to start bailing that shit out.
