Portia’s expression remained calm, but there was a flicker of understanding in her eyes.

Friedrich swallowed thickly, his gaze locking with Portia’s, never leaving. His expression is shielded, but his fists are clenched.

Portia sighed, closing her eyes. Of course she knew that he wasn’t about to give up, but still… it’d be a whole lot easier for everyone if he just did.

Friedrich rubbed his temples and groaned. Everything hurt... the world was spinning. Now his various aches and pains from the fall he took were catching up with his aging body. "...I already told you," he groaned, "I won't do zhis again." And now he had an extra incentive *not* to. He wasn't too keen on angering... whatever she was. It made him very uncomfortable just thinking about it. He didn't want to believe she was any sort of spiritual entity. He just couldn't figure out what else she *could* be. He was content to think of this as a dream. Maybe he was drunk or tripping. He slowly, agonizingly, made his way to his feet. "I need to find Naomi..." He said vacantly, preparing to shuffle off down the street.

"Don’t worry, she’s fine." The tall woman smiled faintly in an apparent gesture of reassurance. “She left right after you passed out."
"Left" at a panicked sprint, granted, but point was, she hadn’t been harmed.

Friedrich did not trust the woman, but he was in no position to argue. Sitting on the ground, groping at his bleeding shoulder, he averted his gaze and glowered at the ground. He did not want to talk to Portia- he wanted to get up, find Naomi and leave this place. But he had the distinct feeling that Portia would not let him leave. "...Months of research and access to the resurrection technology in Mann Co. industries." He responded. "...I kept her body preserved for twenty years, replacing failed organs and preserving her within a solution I acquired from Russian scientists. I preformed psychological tests on myself and discovered how to force her brain to begin functioning again by using my own life experience to fill zhe void left by death in her mind. Using the Respawn, I shocked her body back to life." He swallowed thickly. "...And no. I vill not do it again. She is not as I remember. I still need to figure out how to restore her to her original state."

She smiled at him in a way that might have come off as condescending, were the expression in her eyes not so grim.
"A little bit of first-hand knowledge," she said carefully, keeping a straight face despite the gaping crater of an understatement. Continuing to feign serenity, she weighed options over what to do next.

Friedrich fainted.

Portia blinked in mild surprise as the chaos unfolded in front of her, her scythe swirling away in an instant as she let go of it. Casting a glance at the retreating Naomi, she instead approached Friedrich’s sprawled form, checking that he hadn’t just joined his wife’s spirit in the eternal beyond.

"It can’t be done."
No longer able to stand still, Portia began to slowly pace as she spoke. “Even from a completely biological standpoint, there are experiences that shape people to be who they are, that can never be recreated or replaced. She may be here physically, but as for the part that made her a human being…" She glanced at him disapprovingly, and just for an instant, like a cat’s eyes reflecting a light, her dark brown eyes appeared to flash a luminous silver.
“That part of her left this world twenty years ago."
A shudder coursed through Friedrich's spine. He didn't like what she was saying, and he didn't want to believe a word about it. Naomi didn't seem to have any clue what the stranger was talking about, cognitively unable to follow the complexities of the conversation.
"Vhy vould you know for certain?" He demanded. "Vhat sort of experience do you have in raising zhe dead?!" He swallowed thickly. "As far as I know, I'm zhe only one vho has." Perhaps arrogant of him, but it was the extent of his knowledge: he was the only person he knew to ever attempt- and succeed (to an extent.) He still wasn't sure how she knew, and what she wanted with him.

"I can see it." Portia’s reply was blunt, as though only a complete fool would not see through what had been done. She gestured towards Naomi with a gloved hand. “How long has she been dead, Friedrich? Ten years? Twenty? Did it ever occur to you that things would change during those years? That perhaps a crucial element may have left forever while you looked for a way to bring her back?"
It was a guess, deduced from looking at their relative ages. Portia still wasn’t sure if Steinkopf himself had brought his wife back, but obviously he was a part of it, and unless he was always much older than the woman— Naomi, was it?— she had been gone for some time.

Portia’s grip eased slightly so that while there was still no way that he could escape, it no longer was painful.
"My apologies, for scaring you," she said softly. “Listen. I am going to let you go now, but please don’t do anything foolish. I only want to know what you were trying to do."
She released his arms, much more gently than before, letting her own arms hang at her sides. However, the calculating look in her eyes communicated little doubt as to how much chance she thought either of them had trying to make a run for it.
Friedrich carefully straightened his aching arm as he stood back up, regarding Portia with a rigid stare. Naomi did similarly, standing at a safe distance and waiting for something to happen. "...What do you want with her?" Friedrich demanded, fists curling at his sides. "How did you know?"

With effortless grace, the dark woman stepped aside, catching Friedrich’s wrist and twisting his arm behind his back. If he attempted to retaliate, he would find out very quickly that she was considerably stronger than he, possibly even supernaturally so.
"Please don’t, you’ll hurt yourself." The serene way she said this was at complete odds with the vise grip she currently had on his arm. Her eyes flashed in the direction of the other woman, and she added, “Calm down. Neither of you are in danger."

A normal person might have tried to make a hasty escape, or maybe apologized and provided some kind of excuse.
Portia was not a normal person.
"So she wasn’t supposed to be out here. You might do well to teach your revived cadaver the importance of keeping a low profile… Mr. Steinkopf."

Friedrich Steinkopf.
Portia knew no one of that name, but doubtless if this Steinkopf hadn’t been the one to drag this dead woman’s body into a mockery of function, he would have an idea of who had.
But first she would need to get to him.
"Perhaps I could help you find him," she offered, a lot less coldly than before. Revulsion at walking carcasses aside, this woman— or what was left of her— was the only clue she had.

As the reanimated woman began to slink away, Portia let out a huff of annoyance, and took a sharp step towards her, intending to follow. But as the roar of a car’s engine sounded over the street, followed closely by the flash of headlights as the vehicle approached, she froze in her footsteps, weighing whether or not to make a quick escape, just in case—
No. Too late. The car had stopped and the door had opened. Not even bothering to turn her head to see who the driver was, she remained where she stood, her eyes still fixed on the woman in white.
Friedrich stumbled out onto the street and immediately shouted for Naomi's attention, and for the stranger's. "Hey!" He walked briskly toward the stranger. "Naomi! Are you alright? What zhe hell is going on!?" He had succeeded in making it painfully obvious that he knew the reanimated woman, was most likely her aforementioned husband, and he was quite shocked to see her out on the street, out of the apartment, and edging away from the mysterious stranger.
